The Metro Tunnel is opening – and to celebrate, we're making public transport free every weekend from opening day in early December to 1 February. Our way of saying thank you, Victoria.

Is there a way that I can only pay when I drive on a particular road? And if it's somewhere that isn't built yet, to pay in advance my share to have it built?
Believe it or not, you would be paying a lot more tax/rates under that arrangement. Think about it: 200 people might use your local road but it conservatively costs $100,000 to maintain that road annually - that works out to be council rates of $500 per person just to cover that particular stretch of road annually. Then you've got the main roads managed by the State, which costs even more (maybe $5,000,000) and 10,000 people use that road… That's $500 in State tax just for that main road. Presumably, you will be travelling across various main roads and local roads so it would add up very quickly, and you would possibly be paying rates to multiple councils!
People have NO IDEA how expensive it is to maintain roads. It's ridiculously expensive, particularly for rural councils that have a low rate base but thousands of kilometres of roads to maintain.
Perth had something like this in Dec-Feb of this past year. I arrived just after it ended.
I can't find the info about 2 months free on the transport.vic.gov.au website from the link above. Maybe it's my browser. Would be interesting if it included Vline, but my guess is that it doesn't. Happy to be wrong and head up to Bendigo on occasion.
EDIT: Includes V-Line from another article I just looked at!
but….are they sure the new metro is gonna open THIS dec?
So funny how people bitch about public works that you, your kids, your grand kids and their dogs dog will enjoy for the years to come. Oh my god I paid $10 in tax boohoo…
Yet people seem to gush over putting their savings into Macquarie to earn 4%p/a which they will use to illegally short sell the share market (attacking your super), cellar boxing Sydney Airport for cheap ripping off retail investors and purchased public assets like Vic Roads on the cheap presumably they now have access to all personal data. No one bats an eyelid eh?
Choose your battles people. Sometimes that 5c isn't worth picking up.
Giving our hard working and much loved ticket inspectors a well earned couple of weekends off from terrorising old Asian ladies and school kids, brilliant.
Are old Asian ladies and kids not subject to the same rules as everyone else?
Wow thanking us for wasting our tax dollars, overbudget and late. While lining up the unions and mates wallet.
YOU ARE WELCOME!

Yeah cool mate, ride the train that ploughs straight through my ancestors burial site
It's cool as long as you acknowledge them
Yay a couple of free days for me while visiting my son and going to the Boxing Day Test. $22 saving.
Vline there are always people who don't tap on, the guy asks for the card and they get ignored and move on, about time they got the whip out
Yay, finally something to show for all the debt.
Fun fact - 1/4 of your state taxes go to paying off debt interest
Just another political gimmick from ALP.
Weekend only and no one stays in Melbourne during Dec & Jan anyway.
95% of houses on my street are empty during the holiday period.Don't get me wrong. I do support low cost public transport, ($2/2 hours) in regular times.
When everyone try to squeeze in the buses and trains, the road will be much smoother and less traffic jam for ME!😎I can't tell you how much I hate PTV. State government should be ashamed of the public transportation they provide.
what would you improve
2$/3hr. Because 2 hours is no longer enough for one way travel. 4$ daily cap.
Free bus for 3 bus stops, 50 cents each afterwards until 2$.
Take over trams and buses, centralise them. Private bus and train companies is ridiculously dumb when it's supposed to be for public service.
Free public transportation to 65+ EXCEPT rush hours.
Put turnstiles to metro stations, so nobody can just walk directly without tapping on. Significantly reduce AOs, people will actually tap on now. Reduce protective officers and put them outside the stations. Reduce admin staff needed for AO's paperwork.
Idk, why myki readers are so bad. Probably forced an incompetent company in Australia to get "made in Australia" label. Get them done properly and cheaper in China.
Tired of seeing 6 labourers/tradies for 2 man job. Cut it down. It's a money sink.
We need the QLD model 50c transport not free travel on weekends for couple of months.
Would be interesting to trial it at least
I like the idea of tax payers footing the bill
I can't understand the logic of this new metro tunnel?
I want to know who said: "Instead of building new stations in the outer suburbs where public transport is lacking, let's build 5 new stations in the inner suburbs which already have great public transport. Furthermore, let's build 2 of those new stations directly opposite existing stations"

this does not benefits me directly therefore it is a waste of money.
I only want to pay for services, products and roads they I use directly. I'm so over paying for everyone to get things for free or cheap.
Is there a way that I can only pay when I drive on a particular road? And if it's somewhere that isn't built yet, to pay in advance my share to have it built?
Also I'll pay all my medical bills and medication with zero government rebates if it means I pay slightly less tax. I'll pay for the police and firies only when I need it.
So unfair.
