26TB Seagate Expansion Shucking Experience
Edit: I can't guarantee it's the same enclosure but maybe something to keep in mind. I think all of the manufacturers would be wanting to make things more difficult for shuckers.
yeah you can, last time I did this one I got barracudas
Still can't get over being forced by my school to pay $10 for a 1.44MB floppy in 1999. God storage has become so cheap. Great price
shows they are closed until 16 Oct.

Shipping: (VIC) starting from $30.94
Duties & Taxes : $31.09
Total: $342.02 USD

The Linux Distros in HDR 4K has crept to 30GB per download since I got myself a 4K Linux Distro 120" projector.
I thought the Linux distro thing was actually Linux distros haha I feel dumb.
Barracudas inside? Won't be good for NAS.
Depends how many bay. The missing vibration sensors arent ideal, but being CMR striping wont hurt.
Even smr drives are fine in a NAS, just not in a RAID config (other than 1)
It will be 4 bays. Pity these aren't EXOS inside.
Typically 4 bays arent damaged without vibration sensors. 6+ typically resonamce becomes a thing.
But good enough to backup a 4*8TB raid5 NAS
Can i use this and make my own cloud storage?
Yes. Quite easily too, if you're comfortable around linux.
Please elaborate on a cloud aspect of this.
Finally, a HD to fit my 2025 collection of
sad movies that require many boxes of tissues?
You're probably on the money with the many boxes of tissues at least. So many step kids seem to be getting stuck in clothes dryers these days.
Some are saying that these drives are all Barracuda shingled drives which are no good for NAS and generally not very good at all for any frequent data writings. CMR is much better than SMR, the latter of which is according to some used in these drives.
See https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/comments/1ldguio/comm…
Then, there's those who have shucked the enclosures and found that the drives are actually HAMR Barracuda, not SMR. See the laser warning on the pic of the shucked drive here: https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/1mkt0vd/26tb_s…
HAMR is new tech. CMR is the oldest tech. SMR is transitional tech which is absolutely undesirable. I think I will probably buy one of these drives on the basis it is probably a helium HAMR drive rather than SMR. For data hoarders here on Ozbargain, these Reddits are probably good information.
Be warned buying Seagate from overseas. I bought mine from Amazon US (shipped to Australia) and they would not honour warranty or their data recovery services as I lived overseas.
Luckily in Australia, this is the retailer's problem.
It's Amazon that need to provide your warranty, not Seagate.
Yes, but they have data recovery services as included as part of their warranty should something go wrong. Obviously Amazon will not be able to do this and will just refund you.
Whilst this is true, the only data recovery service you should ever need is the one where you restore your own backup to your new drive.
If you ever need data recovery from someone else, then you're doing something very wrong with your backups 😁
Good point.
If your data is critical and you need Australian warranty then you should buy from Australian distributor for full warranty support. Or buy cheap from overseas and no expectation for any warranty or data recovery support.
That's a tempting price, but I've lost a lot more Seagate's than WDs over the years, so I'm still wary.
How come this deal is marked as unobtainable? B&H won't ship to Australia?
Yeah i was looking at purchasing one but assume it has to do with being closed until the 16th

Anyone know if you can shuck these?
