Assistance with Choosing a Gaming PC

Hi All,

Just after some help picking up a gaming pc. I'm a mac guy & console gamer, so admittedly know zero about graphics cards or where to even start.

Basically, my son has been playing Among Us 3D which is a very basic game, however it has the school laptop we bought him heating up like crazy and the fan running constantly, so was just looking at biting the bullet and getting a PC that will both handle that game with ease, but also allow me to fire up Steam & play most modern titles (like FPS type games and racers etc).

Anyone know the best place to start? Would really appreciate the assistance. I'm located near Sydney on the NSW Central Coast if that helps with recommendations.

Edit: Looking to keep the PC itself to under $2K if possible. (Already have a monitor).

Thanks

You're going to have to post a budget. You can pay anything from $250 to over $5k just for a video card.

    • Sorry, just added it. Hoping to stay under $2k for the PC. Already have a 24" 4K monitor which I can upgrade down the track.

Most relevant thing is budget and what that budget needs to include (do you have keyboard, mouse, monitor?) :/

The next most relevant thing is monitor resolution? Playing decent frame rates (ie similar to a console) on a 5k monitor is far more expensive than 1440p, etc

If you have nothing, consider 1440p gaming based around a system with a 9070XT (~$1000 just for the GPU card alone) …

    • I've got a 24" 4K monitor. Don't need to game in 4K though & am happy with 1440p.

For now, just after the PC itself & hoping to stick under $2K. Can upgrade the monitor down the line to something bigger.

    • Seconded.

If he really wants a custom PC start with that as a base then look at what's better by reviewing parts on PC picker going through tier lists and guides.

  • Just wait for ~$800-$950 build from TechFast, they come up fairly frequently.

Before you buy, just check if you are happy with the FPS:

  • From personal experience, I would recommend future-proofing somewhat with this purchase, because while they might start with basic games, they will inevitably move on to bigger and better games (plus works better for your games as well, if you can get on).

I would keep an eye out for something with similar specs to this for around $1500 - there will probably be some sales leading up to Black Friday.
