  • KrisFlyer is doing what every other loyalty/rewards program is doing.

Be it banks or airlines, devaluation of points/miles happens all the time.

    • devaluation of points/miles happens all the time.

      Sure.

This thread is about the news / reminder that the devaluation will start in, just over 2 weeks' time.

So, currently the redemption for flights is at the 'lower' rate.

I have a whole bunch of KF points and I got turned off, trying to redeem it for Scoot flights,
because the 'exchange' rate is very high,
      eg.
50K points for a $500+ flight from Australia to China,
but ~50K points for 1-way flight from Sydney to Barcelona as well.

Crap program. 3 year points expiry is a massive deal breaker.

still one of the best reward programs for flying out of Aus to Asia/Europe unfortunately, the partnership with virgin helps although significantly watered down upon conversion

    • +4

Agreed, but that's the reason why there is better award availability with Krisflyer versus, say Qantas, where you have better chances winning the Lotto than getting a business reward redemption to Europe.

    • 3 year points expiry is a massive deal breaker.

To be more specific, the '3 year expiry' is actually in tranches.

If you got 30K points on 01 JAN
and then you got 40K points on 01 JUN,
on 02 JUN, you will have 70K points, in total, right?

But the 30K points will have 3-year expiry date, different to the 40K points 3-year expiry date.

That's what bugs me the most.

Thanks for posting this. Why do these companies always have to be such greedy asses. The concept of points expiring in a loyalty programme is absurd from a consumers perspective. I might only fly Singapore airlines but may not have been able to travel anywhere via flight due to whatsoever reason. Does that mean I am no longer a loyal customer of Singapore airlines? This absurdity needs to stop,

    • They're treating these points, like a currency, because in reality it is.

As the prices of a seat reflects the price of oil, demand, costs of airport time-slots, etc. etc…. so, too does these "frequent flyer points" [FFP].

The thing is, as the global economy has a certain rate of inflation, 'baked into' the calculations and devaluation of things,
so too these airlines with their FFP.
I mean, inflation and usury/interest itself is a form of theft, that bankers are using to 'steal' the wealth of the world, but that's a totally separate discussion.

When it comes to FFP, they can always use 'inflation' to devalue the points, but you are right, they use another tactic to force you redeem the FFP,
      ie. through an expiry date.

To them, all those FFPs represent a 'promise' to you, ie. they owe you a seat
and owing something to someone…is a liability for them…and as long as this liability is on their balance sheet, the airlines don't like it.

Still, I agree with you, about why they need to expire them, because there are decent airline FFP programs that have no expiry date,
provided there is some 'activity' in your account, eg. Virgin's Velocity, United's Mileage Plus, etc.

Then, you have Singapore Air, Emirates, Qatar….(who I have / had memberships with), and out of those, the one that irks me the most is Singapore Air's KrisFlyer.
They have this concept of points expiring per TRANCHE of points.

This concept of "tranches" is actually a smart way to annoy me, and they're successful at it.

Currently, I have 100K KrisFlyer points (accumulated from AMEX and St.George bank credit cards), and mine will be devalued in about 2 weeks' time.

So, I'm feeling the pressure now, to try and redeem for some flights for July-August in 2026, but it's actually hard to plan a trip so far away for me.

      PS:
If you don't like this expiring concept of frequent flyer points,
then start thinking about the expiring concept of "digital money" (ie. CBDCs).
That idea has been floating around for the last 5+ years (since digital 'smart contracts' have entered our language),
and it's apparently coming, after the Digital-ID systems are in place by 2030, in many countries globally.
Then, the digital money will be tied to a person…and there'll be mechanisms put in place, so that you cannot save the money or horde the money,
and be forced to spend it…otherwise it will "expire".

Good luck to everyone,…with KrisFlyer….and CBDCs.
