Moving from SA to WA and Want to Sell Fridge and Washing Machine Just before We Leave Best Options?

we have been living in Adelaide for nearly a year will be leaving in mid Jan to move back to WA. We purchased a new fridge and washing machine when we moved here, thinking about what is the best options to get rid of them.

  • Should I trade them in to the good guys or Harvey Norman etc as we would like to buy a new washing machine/fridge in wa anyway, however the fridge and washing machine will just be a year old and we will probably lose 90% of the value?

  • put on gumtree/fb marketplace but we really want to use those till the very last days we are here, should I just advertise it and say you can only purchase it on this date?

  • any other options?

Looks like you’ve gotten the only 2 options out there.

  • Put on gumtree/fb marketplace with a bit lower than market price and mention that they are only available for pickup on x/x/x, but they can be reserved by coming to have a look at them and paying a ~10% deposit. Having a bit lower than market price will get more people interested in them and make it more likely that your conditions will suit someone. I would request the deposit in person and make it relatively small so that both of you know that each other isn't a scammer.

    • Thanks yeah i might do something like that

The dilemma you have is needing a Fridge and Washing Machine right through Christmas and people wanting to buy these items new /cheap in the after Christmas sales.

Also some Washing Machine don't travel well and they have them and fridges in WA.

I'd be tempted to sell the Fridge now and buy a Cheap Bar Fridge to get you through Christmas and maybe use a Laundromat if you can sell the Washing Machine for a good price.

    • Yeah not a bad idea

      • Not great either , counter productive is my opinion. Buy new , trade in your old white goods. You've got black Friday and if not , I'm sure you can cut a good deal 💯

You can trade in a washing machine?

Things could be different in SA from the rest of Australia.

I've seen Mattresses flopping about on top of the car roof.

Hoping to see a fridge and washing machine tie down strapped to the wings of an 737.

  • Each Harvey Norman store is a franchise operation so it is likely you would need to ship to Perth in order to trade-in with them

    • Ah yeah good point

  • Bring them with you? Put them on a back haul.

They are sadly exy AF if you’re anywhere in Australia other than the east coast. Even on a back haul

  • If you wait to sell until last minute, what happens if your buyer falls through?

It's not like every buyer turns up as scheduled with the right money all the time via Facebook/gumtree trading.

Where are you living now? Landlord or new owner interested in buying them after you vacate?

    • Yeah true i was thinking of having a 2nd and 3rd in line in that case, but yeah still a risk. In Adelaide, no i think they are just going to rent it out again.

      • Landlord might think about including them in his rental property.

        Some seem to.

Do you own the place in SA? Or are you renting? If the listing hasn't gone up yet you could ask the REA to mention in the listing that the current tenant is moving interstate and would be happy to sell the fridge and washing machine that are only a year old.

  • To sell white goods like that is going to take weeks if not months.

  • It's really hard to sell stuff at the last minute. I left selling some stuff a bit late when we were moving and ended up having to sell it for way less than we payed for it (it was all from FB to begin with and shouldn't have decreased substantially in value since we had it). Also had to give a few things away as freebies to move them. Disposal was $$ so giving away was still a win. If you try and move something quickly expect to let it go for a fair bit below market.

    • Yeah im well aware i may have to sell it dirt cheap, which is why trading it in is not such a bad option.

  • You can send white goods off to a local auction. The Auction Rooms at Wellend takes fridges and washing machines. I'm not associated with this auctioneer but I do buy stuff there.

Positives: You give them your stuff and it's virtually guaranteed to sell. No hassle.

Negatives: There's a $20 lotting fee (overall, not per item). 20% fee to you on the final bid. All auctions start at $1, and whatever it sells for, that's it.

You will have to deliver the goods there yourself.

The auctioneer shuts down for Christmas so the timing may not be good for you. Otherwise I'm sure there are second hand fridge/washing machine dealers in Adelaide.

    • Not bad but im unable to deliver the goods.
