A really good price, makes me want to go again. We had good experience with them. The only thing was on the way back we came across a loud and noisy group of people in their forties, male and female who just couldn't stop talking.

    • Noise cancelling.

Imagine what people thought in Japan!

Ah the Chinese, American and Aussie tourists. Least favourite probably in that order

          Where tf are the Indians.

          • @Fredfloresjr: Not much indians in Japan until the recently, I was being told indian cannot afford to go to japan.

            • +2

@AnyFurtherDiscount: So they chose to spend at Canada over Japan?

              • +8

@Fredfloresjr: They aren't tourist in Canada, they're chasing residency.

                Big difference

            • +2

@AnyFurtherDiscount: 14 months ago, Japan was full of Indians. Last visit 2 months ago, near none.

I guess they all came here, Australindia

              • @BatmanAU: I saw a few when I was there in April. Not many, but I distinctly remember a family posing, doing thumbs up, etc. in front of the Hiroshima atomic bombing cenotaph.

            • -3

@AnyFurtherDiscount: You'll be surprised to learn that the Indians will soon be migrating en masse to Japan. Japan plans to import 500k Indians soon.

              • -1

@t25: Any evidence on this? Everything I’m reading is they are trying to refuse them and some European groups as they disregard their culture. ( I would say Aussies too, a lot of idiots from here too as it’s the new Bali)

Free accommodation. GZ is the birthplace of yum char (best you'll have in your life).

      • Really? How does this work? Do you stay inside the airport or do you need to check out of customs and go through the whole process again?

    • Why?

      • +1

If the airline’s fine with your low fare, you should be fine with its beat-up plane.

        • +8

I fly twice a year with China Southern and their planes are not beat-up condition, they are new or at least feel like new :)

    • Care to share more?

    • +14

China Southern and China Eastern are different airlines and are not linked.

I have flown China Eastern few times and I can say it is quite a different experience from China Southern.

    • +1

You still have time to delete this 🤡

      • Well, just imagine, or even read the fact that I'm reviewing China Eastern then? It's not hard.

        • Or maybe stop posting irrelevant reviews based on absurd assumptions?

          • @currentfad: True, I made two assumptions because I was emotional, but it was still a shitty experience…..

    • +2

I am highly doubt what you commented, lemme break it down this way:

CZ and MU are not linked, no way they would throw px to each other. One based at CAN and the other is based at PVG.

China to Japan flight is always at capacity, and there are more than 400 flights per day, across airlines and ports. So not likely they will cancel and throw you at next flight? Especially you travel to big city like NRT/HND or KIX. CZ and MU have multiple flight per day.

I do understand their free layover hotel are hard for foreigner, due to language barrier.

I booked 6 of my flights this year with all chinese carrier, through the cheapest OTA on ozbargain, never have any problems. Tips: Contact them on wechat and good luck!

      • +2

I actually think OP thinks CZ = MU…

They also booked through Flight Centre, rather than direct with airline which I think is a mistake

    • +3

It's not great, is it? But it sounds more like it's a Flight Centre issue.

If you booked through Flight Centre they should just sort it out, instead of telling you that Chinese Eastern is hard to contact, gave you incorrect information about free accommodation, no instructions on how to check-in online.

It sounds like they very much added to the problem.

      • +1

        Totally agreed to your comment.

        • What exactly did you mean that you highly doubt my comment? Can you make your comment readable like cacbm

      • Thanks mate for your empathic response. Also because I'm neurodivegent I think I much prefer direct contact with airlines and having a travel agent, but because i'm poor I do everything on the cheap. Actually no wait, a travel agent might still be bad… what I meant to say is this was done online through a travel agent, not in person. My friend was handled fine through flight centre in person.

      • -2

Here's a cleaned up version thanks to Ai… that helps me understand the situation better…

Reviewing Flight Centre/China Eastern not Southern (because it still may be helpful to some).

That was an experience. (Just went to Japan, came back a couple of weeks ago.)

To clarify — I flew with China Eastern (MU), not China Southern. They’re different airlines. I only mentioned Southern because I assumed they were linked at first.

Anyway, China Eastern were easily the worst airline I’ve used in five Japan trips. They changed my flight dates, likely due to scheduling or load issues, forcing an overnight stay in Shanghai instead of just a few hours.
Because I booked online through Flight Centre, sorting it out was a nightmare — they had to contact China Eastern multiple times, made several mistakes, and even told me I’d get free accommodation during the layover. The next day, they called back to say that information was wrong.

On top of that, checking in online was difficult — the ticket details and reference numbers didn’t match what the airline site required. I eventually sorted it, but it was far from smooth.

Next time I’ll be booking directly with the airline or a local travel agent in person, so if something goes wrong, I can speak to someone directly instead of going in circles online. Too much unnecessary hassle.

  • Why no BNE?

    • +1

Only because BNE is too profitable to offer discounts.

  • +1

    19 hour stopover..

  • +1

Fairly sure you can stay in Guangzhou for a day or two to break up the flights, at no extra charge. I recently (2 weeks ago) booked a trip in the back half of November with the following itinerary for 1k return:

    • Syd > GZ, stay 2 nights
    • GZ > Beijing, stay 7 nights
    • Beijing > Tokyo, stay 6 nights
    • Tokyo > GZ, stay 2 nights
    • GZ > Syd

    No red eye flights either.

    • You booked directly from the airline?

      .

      • Yep, initial search was via Google Flights which is how I found the cheap fare, then I booked directly with China Southern. Was pleasantly surprised to find that I could select (basic) seats on each flight for no extra charge.

  • +1

So for these, is it booked via Mytrip.com? It's what pops up as the cheapest on IWantThatFlight search for the November Melbourne dates. Anyone have any experience with this third-party bookie and is the accommodation for the layover included/free with these third-party bookings?

  • -2

Horrible airline and what looks like a stop over (didn't see any direct) turning a ~9 hour flight into a ~17+ hour journey. No thank you.

    • +2

That's the choice one has to make. Do you value your money or your time?

Guangzhou isn't too bad for a layover. It means I can get some killer roast goose and dim sum.

      • True, I understand the time trade off aspect of savings. I think the time+quality of airline combo kills the deal from a value perspective for me. Love me some cantonese food though, don't get me wrong.

  • -8

Look at the negative votes Bailbondsh got by simply stating his experience, so sad too many sh@theads in the ozbargain community !
I also wouldn't fly any China airlines no matter how cheap they are, just also from a super bad experience transitting through GZ to Shanghai. The time and anxiety costed simply not worth the savings.

    • Care to explain? I'm transitting through GZ to Shanghai too in my up coming trip, what should I be aware of that can cause the anxiety?

      • -6

My experience last time was that the passenger sitting next to me had a 1 or maybe 2 year old sitting on her lap as apparently they allow this without a paid seat for the kid. The economy seat was not big so you can imagine a tired and screaming kid sitting next to you on a night flight. The service we received onboard was really bare minimum for a so called fulll service airline. When we landed in GZ we had just over 2 hours for boarding the connecting flight to Shanghai. GZ international airport was big but the signages for directions were shit, I asked some uniformed people working in the airport for direction of where to go for my connecting flight only to be pointed to wrong places and because it was big, by the time I realised it wasn't the right place to turn around I ddin't know how many minutes I have wasted ! In the end I found it but I had to go through the custom again with a winding long queue. There were no one there I could talk to to advise we would miss our connecting flight being held up in the queue. When I finally moved into the custom area then I saw officer there and quickly asked to be prioritise so that we could make the flight. For going through custom, you had to even take off your shoes to put them in for scanning as well ! We were the last 2 passengers finally boarded the plane and the anxiety and unpleasant experience I had with GZ airport made me swear I will never use the Chinese airlines and transitting in China again.

        • Sounds hectic. Crikey!!!

        • +6

I hate people like you but I am here to explain and help, or maybe teach you how to navigate within the airport because I dont know what's in that head of yours. People neg because they all have common sense. You can't just angry because you don't have.

Let me teach you how, in Aussie airport version,

You fly from Bali to Brisbane, via Sydney. Similar to you fly to Shanghai, via Guangzhou. Firstly, clap when the plane is landed. Do noted clapping when the plane land is mandatory, then you get off the plane. Proceed to immigration at SYDNEY, then MOVE to domestic terminal and board the next booked flight to BRISBANE.

I have been to nearly 100 airports, arrival and immigration surely you cannot miss, just open your eyes and look for IMMIGRATION / ARRIVAL / BAGGAGE

or if you miss, follow the people that get off on the same plane, or ask the people that travel on the same plane, they surely speak english, what if they dont speak english? Ask another, surely there will be someone who speaks english, the plane is from AUSTRALIA

DO NOT appoach any airport staff, DO appoach airlines staff, if you fly CZ, find CZ staff. It is their hub, 101% will be someone there.

Baby crying is nothing to do with the airlines / Baby crying is nothing to do with the airlines / Baby crying is nothing to do with the airlines - Is this enough to explain?

Remove shoe for security, we dont have to do it before 11th September 2001, so you should know who to blame. Still unknown who to blame? Blame Anthony Albanese.

Anymore questions? Happy to help :)

          • -2

@AnyFurtherDiscount: Wow thank you for you the self righteous and I don't give a damn if you "hate" people like me or not. I am stating my personal experience and I didn't like it so whoever found it appealing you are free to go for it. Baby crying because they are not comfortable as they HAD to sit on his mother's lap as he had NO SEAT !!! It was an eye opener for me as it was the very first time that I saw airline allowed toddler to sit on his mother's lap without having his own seat.

Approach airline staff ??? There were NONE on the ground while I was hurrying to look for where to go for my connecting flight.

I stand with what I said as it was my experience and NO, would not use them and transit via China again if I have a choice, period !!!

            • @sistermay: To be fair, I think all airlines allow toddler to sit on mother's lap without his own seat even Qantas.

            • +1

              @sistermay:

It was an eye opener for me as it was the very first time that I saw airline allowed toddler to sit on his mother's lap without having his own seat.

That is the industry standard policy. Infants under the age of 2 are generally required to fly in an adult's lap, unless there is an available bassinet or in certain other circumstances.

              For example Qantas says:-

We define an infant as any child under two years old at the time of travel.

All infants booked online are booked without a seat and must travel either in the lap of the adult travelling with them or be placed in the bassinet if available when permitted during flight.

If the infant doesn’t comfortably fit within the specifications of a bassinet, they must travel in the lap of the adult travelling with them.

        • +3

          You sound like a Karen.

    • +2

First their issues were probably with the travel agent as if you book through an agent, you very often have to deal with them on any issues like cancellation.

The second problem is China Eastern is a completely different airline to China Southern. It's like have a problem with Jetstar and complaining on a Virgin Australia post.

China Southern does have a better reputation than Eastern.

Can i select a long layover of 2-3 days in guangzhou for one way?

    • Yea I wish I could have a two week layover

  • Interesting I found cheaper flights with Xiamen airlines for some dates.

  • +2

I used China Southern to fly from Mel-Tokyo last year. No issues at all, and my stopovers in GZ were only 3-4 hours long.

Comfortable flight, decent food and no hassles at GZ airport.

  • Hey all! On a related note,

    Perth to tokyo
would adding a stopover to Sydney affect this pricing much? Or any knowledgeable friendly bargainers to help recommend what I might do for this.

Hard set on leaving Perth Dec 2 to Sydney, leaving Sydney from Dec 4 onwards, staying in Japan for 2 weeks and returning directly to Perth.

Thank you so much for your time in advance, sorry if this gets downvoted

I will be surprised if it will not. Only one way to find out - use the website or g flights to do multi city.
