So it can help you find the ones nearest to you at any time…?

      • +3

Approximate location is good enough for this purpose. Why do they need to know where I am to within a meter? Are they hoping Dezi logs on to find cheap fuel.

        • +1

Then give them approximate and not precise? If the app ceases to work, then don't use it? I have no problem with them knowing my precise location and if they choose to design their service catering to those who are comfortable sharing precise, I'm cool with that.

          • @Nillionaire: It only works with precise location. PetrolSpy would have been the perfect name it wasn't already taken. This is an invasion of privacy by the government. A fuel-price app shouldn’t need precise real-time GPS access - suburb level data would do just fine. This is just VicTrack by another name, a Trojan Horse.

@JIMB0: Im using it now without location.

Geez man, tell us what you really want to say.

              • @plmko: I’m just raising security issues. I promise I don’t own a bunker or wear a tinfoil hat - yet.

                • +4

@JIMB0: I just denied any app permission and manually entered the postcode. I do the same with PetrolSpy. Always enter the postcode manually.

            • @JIMB0: You don't need to use the Services Victoria app. The real-time data from it will almost certainly make Petrolspy more accurate (I've seen false prices being reported previously on Petrolspy, as it relies on community reporting).

I can't filter by brand anyway (e.g. 6c Linkt/Telstra discount with 7-11) so I'll still go back to Petrolspy.

    • Work on iPhone without location, just use your postcode.

Then drive around and check the servos yourself.

I can think of a few reasons:

      1. The government is using this app to know your exact location right before you drive to a petrol station, because they really need that information to stalk you
      2. The approximate range can be up to 10km, exact location provides a more useful user experience
      3. The government contractor who was paid way too much to code this app simply didn't care, or it caused a bug they couldn't be arsed fixing, or some level of laziness

That you jumped to the first kinda says more about you than anything else. My bets are on #3.

      • I just like a good conspiracy theory. You lot are no fun.

        • -1

Why not tell us how you really feel?

  • +1

Why is it in the Services Victoria App and not a standalone app? Now if the "Servo Saver" part of it has a security problem then the hacker can steal your digital drivers licence also?

    • -3

It's a government spy tool to track the people of Victoria. A standalone app wouldn't give them your details so they cleverly linked it to the Service Victoria app.

    • +2

I bet you would bitch that the Government spent $xxxk to maintain a standalone app when they could just wrap it under a single app at no more cost.

You also don't need to login to use it. Take off your tin foil.

      • Sounds like a Victorian version of WeChat.

  • when I click "find the best fuel price near you" in the service vic android app, it opens firefox, then again asking to download service vic app. This goes in an endless loop,

I always go to APCO anyway, which has the cheapest fuel prices. Rarely use PetrolSpy when travelling far.

Jacunta has developed addon to Miki, using all the world class software engineering that underpinned it.

I opened the app and one of the servos showing near me is actually 5km further away.

Also, quite a few of the servos on Petrolspy are not even showing on Services Victoria App.

    This government couldn't run a chook raffle…

  • Why would anyone willingly let the government into their home and their devices?

Just use petrolspy from a web browser like Brave.

    • Why would anyone willingly let the government into their home and their devices?

You already have the app if you want a digital copy of your licence or other government ids.

      • Yeah, I don't have those for the same reason plus hackers.

        • Yeah, I don't have those

You won't have a choice in the near future.

          • @jv: Nah nah nah. The government won't make it mandatory. Tha banks, telcos and utility companies will just require it, otherwise no accounts or service for you.

What's that new saying we have in Australia?

            As mandatory as possible.

But it's still your choice. /s

            • @tenpercent:

The government won't make it mandatory.

              They won't have a choice.

Tha banks, telcos and utility companies will just require it

              They accept digital licences now…

  • SO it's just petrol spy but.. worse?

    • why worse? I havent tried it yet. shouldnt it just be like petrol spy but with no ads?
