            @jus0212: Ultimate gift cards can be added as a new payment card to Apple Pay, Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet (and I have done this myself many times).

            However, do not add too many to the same wallet on one device in a short period of time, otherwise you may trigger fraud controls from Blackhawk Network (the gift card scheme operator) and/or the mobile wallet operator.

            Whether you want to do the leg-work in converting multiple $30 and $50 Ultimate gift cards into Apple gift cards at JB Hi-Fi across multiple transactions is up to you. (It is against JB Hi-Fi gift card policy (clause 14) and Ultimate gift card terms and conditions (clause 3), so you may end up dealing with a staff member who is keen to enforce this restriction.)

            @Cloudie: Step 1 - You basically by the discounted Ultimate gift card (example $100, you pay $90 with 10% off), add them to your Apple Wallet App. This means, your physical gift card is not digitally stored on Apple Wallet App.

            Step 2 - Go to JB HI-FI store, pick up Apple Gift Card ($100), over the counter, the rep will scan the Apple Gift card and will ask you to pay. You double tap the button on your iPhone to open up the wallet app, you will see your Ultimate Gift card $100. Tap your iPhone on to the pay terminal. DONE!

            Step 3 - repeat.

            Back in 2023, I bought like 25 gift cards by going to 5 different JB Stores (Ultimate cards), loaded them all one by one onto my wallet app. Went to JB, paid and bought Apple gift cards worth over $2800. Saved 10% (around $280).

            Bought iPhone 15 Pro Max 512gb from Apple Store. Travelled overseas and claimed 10% GST! (Lol crazy times!)

              @BuddhaBoy: How likely are Coles and JB likely to have hundreds of Ultimate Kids and Apple cards (respectively)? I’d be wanting to buy over the counter and not from the rack.

              I’ll need to buy 14 Ultimate Kids cards then pay with them for 14 Apple cards.

              If I have to go to 5x Coles and then 5x JBHF it’s definitely not worth my (and I’d imagine most people’s) time unfortunately.

                @Shiny Mew: A single Coles store is unlikely to have hundreds of Ultimate Kids gift cards. You usually only find a stack of gift cards on the shelf, and maybe some more in a storage area (usually inside the gift card shelf). The only time I have seen a Coles store have hundreds of gift cards available at once was this.

                A single JB Hi-Fi store is likely to at least 100 Apple gift cards of various denominations.

                Btw, the only denominations for Ultimate Kids gift cards included in this deal are $30 and $50. Coles also sells a variable load denomination where you can choose to load an amount between $50 and $500, but that is excluded. Would that mean you actually need at least 28 Ultimate gift cards?

        @countingbeans Just wondering, was the Ultimate gift card you bought in July in the older or newer packaging?
        The older packaging had the sticky dots which allowed the packaging to be opened then resealed easily, so risk of tampering is higher with those.
        The newer packaging is sealed and requires ripping off a strip of the packaging before can be scanned by the easier. The packaging also says "Do not sell if hologram is broken" which to me meant do not buy if strip had been removed/tampered with before purchase.

        As in you are saying to exchange them online while you are still in coles? I believe how the 'scam' happens is that there is an automated script that runs as soon as it is activated and exchanges them. I'd have no chance in beating it unless I get the gift cards that have not been tampered with yet. I'd be getting about 40 $50 cards… may have to go to a few different coles…

    They will always have this standard reply that 'what you see is what they have' when it comes to the gift card section. And to get the money back I think Coles would mostly likely redirect you to the card provider and if that's the case it seems likes it not going be easy as Blackhawk(Card Issuer) doesn't have the best rep in regards to customer support from what I have seen, have no personal experience with them though.

        Sorted it out, expiry date was on gift card but was in a bit of a panic thinking I had compromised cards. I think the glue covering the PIN number just came off when taking it out of the packet.

            @topherboi: Only some participating retailers support this. For example, you cannot exchange an Ultimate gift card for an Officeworks gift card through that portal. The Ultimate gift card website will tell you which participating retailers are on the portal.

            @Brick50: I just had a look at the Ultimate gift card website and it has a new FAQ:

            Can I exchange my Ultimate Gift Card for a JB HiFi eGift?

            Exchange for JB HiFi eGift is no longer available. Ultimate Gift Cards can be used in-store or online at JB HiFi, only.

            When shopping at JB HiFi online, your cart must be equal to or less than your gift card balance.
            Split payments cannot be made through their online store, if your purchase is of greater value than your gift card balance please make your purchase in-store.

            There is also an almost identical FAQ for The Good Guys.

            The gift card terms and conditions (clause 4) makes it clear that a redemption option can be changed at any time without prior notice, so Blackhawk Network can just remove the feature. (Blackhawk Network can also just remove a participating retailer completely without prior notice, and TCN can do the same on their gift cards.)

            I am not sure whether it was Blackhawk Network that decided to remove this redemption option, or JB Hi-Fi instructing Blackhawk Network to remove this redemption option.

              It for sure would be illegal if they do that right? Consider they advertise JB HI-FI logo so flashily on the front of the card I don't think their T&C would hold up, this would be those cases where the companies can put up whatever T&C they want but won't just hold up as per the consumer law.

                @ninohax: Potentially, but I am not aware of anyone actually taking any action against Blackhawk Network or TCN to test its legality.

                Keep in mind that the bit you quoted from me is not a hypothetical, because Blackhawk Network and TCN have removed a number of retailers over the years from their gift cards. For Ultimate gift cards, since the Visa version was introduced in late 2021:

                • Eight retailers no longer accept Ultimate gift cards (boohoo, Deliveroo, General Pants Co., Mad Mex, Pet House, Sportsgirl, Thankly, UFC Fight Pass). I think most of the gift cards in this deal will still have the logos for boohoo and General Pants Co. on the packaging, even though those business have stopped accepting Ultimate gift cards at least a few months now.

                • More retailers are in the process of being removed from Ultimate gift cards (e.g. BCF, Binge, Dangerfield, Drummond Golf, Kayo Sports, lululemon, Pet Circle, rebel, Rubi, Subway, Supercheap Auto, Wittner).

                I do not keep track of retailers removed from TCN gift cards (even though I probably should), but the most high-profile removal of a retailer I recall was eBay. The OP for that forum post had similar thoughts to you on the legality of eBay's removal.

      Coles sells an Ultimate Kids gift card in a variable load denomination, which can be loaded with up to $500. However, that is excluded from this deal. If you are going to take advantage of this deal, you will need to purchase a stack of $30 or $50 Ultimate Kids/Teens gift cards, then purchase the item in-store.

      Alternatively, you could go to Woolworths to purchase variable load TCN Kids gift cards loaded with up to $500 each. The only issues are:

      • That deal is for reward points, not an upfront discount.

      • Considering your apparent location (Sydney), I would be very cautious of buying TCN gift cards, because of the number of reports of tampered TCN gift cards being sold at stores in Sydney.

        How does the tampering work? I assume tampering would just mean that they take a copy of the card numbers/ccv/expiry, but the card isnt activated until purchase. So if you go to buy a card, activate it, then swap the card immediately, it would minimise the risk? Or does the card just not work?

          For physical TCN gift cards, tampering can take different forms, including:

          If the card number or PIN is partially scratched off, an exchange is no longer possible. If the magstripe is damaged or the PIN is partially scratched off, it means physically redeeming the gift card in-store is no longer possible.

            @WookieMonster: Wookie I have amassed 44 gift cards, of which 22 have been converted into JB hifi gift cards and the rest are stuck as ultimate teen cards. Do you know if I can do a layby at JB hifi and perhaps go swipe the cards and then go back at a later date to scan all the gift cards?

            I imagine it's going to take like 20 minutes for the staff to process the transaction otherwise and certainly not looking forward to that. Alternatively I wonder if the staff would allow me to go in and maybe buy 5x $50 gift cards at a time with the teen cards and then purchase my item online with all the JB gift cards like I originally intended.

    I initially held off on purchasing yesterday when I learned they removed the ability to exchange for a Digital JB card online. However, I called up my local store and they were happy to swipe 16 gift cards for me so I ended up purchasing a mix of 10x $50 TCN Kids (Woolies) and 6x $30 Ultimate Teens (Coles) and used them immediately for an in-store purchase of an Apple Watch.

    Now, what I noticed was that the Ultimate Gift Cards with the newer packaging seems tamper-proof (or at least safer?) because there is now a seal on the middle that you need to rip-off first before you can even scan them in the checkout. You can't see any card details at all and I ended up ripping them off first to be able to scan the longer barcode that's printed on the card itself and there's also a hologram that would be torn off when you rip the paper out. Unless there would be some inside job at Ultimate, I can say these new Ultimate gift cards are way safer than TCN as you would be able to easily see if they have been tampered with.

    If I wanted to buy an iPhone at the Apple Store how can I use these cards?
    (Reason I don’t way to buy at jb hifi is because trade in for my current phone is less than what Apple is offering)
    Can I exchange these gift cards at jb or officeworks or any other for an Apple gift card is is there any other way out of this? Please help!

      The only realistic way to use these gift cards at the Apple Store is to first use them at a participating retailer to purchase an Apple gift card, then using the Apple gift cards at the Apple Store. However:

      • This is against the Ultimate gift card terms and conditions (clause 3).

      • As @ChiefAJ already said above, this is against the JB Hi-Fi gift card policy. There should be nothing in the JB Hi-Fi in-store checkouts to stop you from using an Ultimate gift card to purchase an Apple gift card, so it will be up to the staff member to enforce this policy; some will, others will not. Considering the largest value of gift cards in this deal redeemable at JB Hi-Fi is $50, you will be making a lot of purchases at Coles and JB Hi-Fi in order to accumulate enough Apple gift cards, so it depends if you want to put in that legwork (especially if you need to deal with a staff member enforcing the JB Hi-Fi gift card policy).

      • As @ChiefAJ already said above, this is against the Officeworks gift card policy. Officeworks updated their in-store checkouts over two years ago to automatically block anyone trying to use an Ultimate gift card (either by swiping the physical gift card or tapping via a mobile wallet) to purchase any gift cards. The online checkouts should also reject your attempt to use an Ultimate gift card to purchase a gift card.

      • I am not aware of any other participating retailers for the gift cards in this deal that sell Apple gift cards.

      Do you have to buy an iPhone from the Apple Store within the next week or so? If not, you may be better off waiting to see whether Apple gift card deals return to Coles, Woolworths or BIG W in early November. History suggests it should. Those deals are basically only ever for Flybuys points or Everyday Rewards points though, not upfront discounts.
