Dirt cheap projector for a kid's PS3

Hello

I was going to get a elcheapo projector for little nephew who is going to be traveling around a lot and wanting to play his ps3.

Now none of these are going to make a ps3 image look good but doesnt matter as its just for a little kid who is not really going to care about the difference from 1080p to 480i.

So does anyone have these and can recommend one or better?

$92 small (AV in 320 x240)

  • Surely a 16" (or similar) LCD screen would be higher quality, about the same price and still be reasonably portable.
All these LED projectors will require a dark room and suitable white wall to see anything and even then, you wont be able to have much more than a 32" projected screen.

  • Cant comment on any of the ones linked other to say the feedback i have heard from people on the led ones is very poor.

How about a portable DVD player with AV in?

  • On all those projectors with their low resolution, I'd guess your nephew would have a disadvantage trying to get through games, seeing 3d worlds and the distance. Perhaps I'm wrong, PS2 and Xbox was only slightly higher resolution and it wasn't too bad but the games were designed for lower resolutions. I would have a feeling after coming from a proper TV your nephew would be quite disappointed, particularly with cheap projectors. The expensive ones they use in lectures are tafe and uni are still pretty bad and there quite often double the resolution and I feel a lot of games the HUD is getting smaller. It's probably me, I'm really picky with resolution, if it isn't high I see the pixels and get annoyed. Also I haven't owned a projector like any of those so don't take my word for it. The two comments above mine are pretty genuine though.

EDIT: Please disregard the rest, I've noticed I've completely forgotten about sound/video output of the PS3 when using a normal PC monitor, if you think a PC monitor suits, you can get them to work but they need to be DVI. I always used to use one on my xbox and used an adaptor to convert audio to my headphones (but you would also need to make sure the headphones have their own volume adjustment).

    You would need this cable

and I'm not sure if this will work but the AV cables from the PS3 could probably be used to output the audio while your using HDMI to the screen (someone here will need to confirm this)

I would suggest going to MSY and spending up to $120 on a monitor, at that price they range from 18.5 to 21.5 inch (diagonally). See models and prices here http://msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf (but your best going into a store as they don't stock all those models and your probably better of asking them what they have and what they would recommend.

and if you want to stick to a budget check eBay or gumtree for a screen, if your not too fused about Widescreen you could get a 17" for $30 second hand. Just make sure it supports HDMI as it's too hard to convert a VGA signal.

If your getting a projector I would try and get the one with highest resolution. 640x480 (defiantly not the first two in your list, 240 pixels down seems way to little pixels) but a dedicated screen would be much better, so check out MSY :). I would also get one which is Widescreen, I reckon most are. Widescreen is what most games are designed to run on. Although games have been designed for the older type of screens, but when the PS4 comes out I reckon all those games will only work on Widescreen. Not that would concern you.

Sorry sometimes I talk a lot of crap.
But you might find what I've come up with useful.
With the PC Screen part, I would make sure to check with someone else that it will work. I've only tried it with XBOX 360 and I'm pretty unwell at the moment so I'm not writing things like I usually do.

    Good Luck!

  • Yeah thanks forinfo veryhelpful , i might get him an elcheapo 10" tablet instead.

….now which tablet do i get him
