Sigma AF 45mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Sony FE $275 Delivered (RRP $798) @ Sigma Photo

950

It's $695 at digidirect and Georges. I was considering picking up the Sony 40mm but this was too good a deal to pass up. Even the cheaper option, the Viltrox 40mm, isn't that much cheaper at $269 (from digidirect).

Pick up locations are available but shipping was free for me so I went with that. Add an item worth $25 or more if you wanna TRS it.

FYI this lens works with Sony full frame as well as aps-c cameras.

That price is wild! I would have bought it in a heartbeat if it were the L-mount version.

  • Super tempting.. Pair well with a Sony A6500? I currently have a 18-200 only, (got the camera used, not used a lot, plan was to sell the 18-200, get a decent short zoom lens like 18-70 odd or equiv) and a single prime and stop at that..

But was going to look at the 23mm 1.4 from Sigma instead. Goal is to have 2 lens that are both lightweight/portable and not too big. I don't need massive focal lengths. 45mm

This 45mm would be like 67mm? Right?

    • +3

I think if you have no plans on going full frame then maybe consider an aps-c lens instead since you can get a wider aperture lens. I guess it depends how much you like the 45mm focal length, the size/feel of the lens and having an aperture ring.

The price is really good through so you can probably try it out and if you don't like it, sell it for the same amount or even slightly more.

Another option is the Sigma 56mm f1.4. I have that lens for Micro Four Thirds and I'm very happy with it.

      • Yeah no plans to change to FF.

Aperture ring could be fun. But yeah good point about resale!

Hmm will think about it.. Though I know it'll disappear soon at this price heh.

I have the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 which is an APSC lens for my Sony a6400 and it's an awesome lens. It's very compact and covers a good focal length, it pairs well with a zoom lens and a prime ultra wide to cover pretty much all you need.

This lens at 45mm feels as though it would be best suited for someone that wanted a dedicated portrait lens on a full frame body.

      • Yeah the 18-50 is exactly what I'd be looking at + a prime of some sort. Sounds like this lens may not be for me then. I'd probably want a shorter prime.

        • +2

I think the 23mm would be better than the 45mm when paired with the 18-50mm.

If I was dead set on the 45mm I would pair it with the 10-18mm but that's because I'm an ultra wide junkie.

          • +1

@bargainjargon: Yeah fair enough! I'm not big on ultra wide shots so this makes sense.

      • Yeah a 45mm lens isn't useful for most people, it's a one trick pony, very specific and niche.

    Sigma AF!

I think this was voted lens of the year around 2019

  • +1

    What?!?
    Must resist now

  • +2

    F2.8 meh

  • I have a Sigma 56mm/f1.4 lens. Any reason to have this one too?

    • Not unless you prefer the size or build quality of the 45mm or like having an aperture ring or have plans on going full frame at some point.

  • +2

Would have been great if I didn't already have the 40mm G

    • I prefer the 40mm focal length and was thinking about getting the Sony but I couldn't pass up a bargain. The Sony would cost me more than double.

If the Sony ever goes on sale maybe I'll sell the Sigma to fund the Sony.

  • +1

Thats a great deal, these are built so well, my 35 f2 is my favourite Lens I own. So damn tempting

    • All the Sigma lenses I've owned have been the plastic ones so I'm really looking forward to shooting with this 45mm. I'm a fan of well built metal lenses with aperture rings.

      • +1

I was shocked by how well built my 35 was when I got it, compared to all the other sigmas I have owned, or Sony's, Canon, Tamron it is the best built lens I have owned.

  • All payments on this site are processed through PayPal ONLY.

    This is weird

    • I think you can check out as a guest and put in your card details. I've done that with a different site but didn't try that method with Sigma.

If this were F2, it would be much more appealing. F2.8 is pretty slow for such a lens, and it is not really that compact given the specs. That's probably why it is discounted, as it is not very appealing.

  • Is this much better than the Sony 50mm f1.8? I have it and it's horrible with AF on my A7 mk1.

    • +1

Get the viltrox 50mm. It is much better than the Sony and very cheap

      • Oh no you've sent me down a rabbit hole. I don't even use my A7 anymore. All now mobile phone cameras. Must resist!

        • If you're happy with your phone then climb back out of the rabbit hole! If you have to shoot with a proper camera then consider an aps-c camera since lenses are often cheaper and smaller than full frame counterparts.

        • No, don't do it! Years from now you'll look back on these low quality phone photos, versus the ones you could have got with your proper camera. Ask me how I know

    • Sony 50/1.8 lens is slow and noisy. get Viltrox one

  • +2

45mm f2.8 is only slightly wider than 50mm, it's neither fast for portraits or wider for being a true street lens. It's almost not compact like a pancake.
It's not bad, but also probably only fits a very specific niche…. great if that's you at this price.

  • Its been a very long time since i last used my A6300. Any reason i would have this lens if i already have a 16mm 1.4 and 30mm 1.4?

    • +1

Not unless you prefer the size or build quality of the 45mm lens or like having an aperture ring or have plans on going full frame at some point. But if you haven't used your camera in a while then maybe first think about whether you still need a proper camera.

    • +1

Let me know if you want to offload one of those lenses :)

  • +2

the Sigma 65mm f2 is also on a good price at $495
not as a heavily discounted as the 45mm

  • Perfect to pair with 82mm uv filter on your gm ii if you want to do TRS: https://sigmaphoto.com.au/products/5920082/sigma-wr-uv-lens-…
35 bucks, other sizes are all 200 to 300

    • If only the 55mm is the same price. Can pair with this lens

  • +1

35mm f1.4 Art in Sigma SA mount was $275 as well. Outstanding. Thank you.

  • I don't have a camera and have been eyeing off a Sony for years. Thinking about the a6700- should I get this in advance because it's a good deal and the OzBargain way?

    • +3

Get it, resell it to fund the A6700.

Good price for a 45mm, but with A6700, this feels more like a 50mm.

Honestly I would go 30mm. Closer to a phone camera focal length, so you are not moving that far away from your subject in the event you want to do a landscape shot

      • Thanks for your advice- very helpful.

    • +2

a6700 is an APS-C sensor, not a Full Frame,
this lens will work on that camera (as they use the same E-Mount) but would have a different focal length, with the crop factor x1.5, it would be similar to a 67.5mm
65mm focal length would be in between a 50mm and 85mm. i would say not that versatile as a first lens, but great as your second lens.

I dont know much of APS-C lenses prices, but they are usually cheaper and smaller compared to their Full frame equivalent.

If you were to buy an a7C, then yes this lens would be a no brainer due to their current price.
40mm/45mm focal length is close to a 35mm and 50mm, which are more standard ones. And it would be just a matter of personal taste.

      • Thanks, that's some good food for thought. a6700 or a7c hmmmmmmmmmm

  • Either they're now OOS or it was a pricing error…

    • Yeah, can't add to cart. Looks like they caught on.

    • +1

Looks legit to me, I got a dispatch email

    • It doesn't say in stock like it did before so probably out of stock now. The out of stock lenses don't have the price displayed.

  • was bit difficult to add to cart, but I managed to get one.

  • How? I can’t find it!

  • +1

What am I going to do with F2.8? F1.4 or bust.

  • Significant photo quality improvement comparing to using iPhone/Google Pixel?

    • Not straight out of camera, there is no Ai processing in the cameras. You have to be able to use image processing software like lightroom to get the best out of it.

      • This is why I haven't used my A7 since pre COVID. Mobile phone camera quality keeps getting better each year and Id rather spend the money on a flagship phone each year than collect a bunch of lenses and drag them out all the time. Maybe I'll get back into the hobby one day but for now I love having the best camera with me all the time.

        • Mobile phone camera quality keeps getting better each year and Id rather spend the money on a flagship phone each year

yes and also the shape of the phone is so much more convenient. fits in your hand, pocket, can survive drops. it's always on you. compared to a bulky camera. I opened a car door into a friends camera once. they werent happy.
I only have a old canon DSLR for live stream face tracking use.

  • Got a mail from them said.

“Unfortunately, the product that you have ordered has been discontinued & is no longer available, so we will be cancelling your order & processing a refund shortly.”

    • may I know what time did you order?

      • Aest time 13:48

    • I ordered about 2:10pm but still no cancellation?

      • I ordered at 1:19 but no confirmation or cancellation…. In limbo

    • You guys mean didn’t receive “order received “ email at all? I’ve received but in my sigma website profile the status is “on hold”. You same?

      • +1

That's right for me. No "order received" email. Only a PayPal email confirming transaction.

        No cancelled order email either

  • +1

    Wow that's a great deal
