There was an update 4 days ago. It's not new. It's 4 days old

    • Yeah but I hoped it was a glitch and would go away, hence my delay in complaining about it.

I don't know what benefit it serves?

      • makes the site look 'cleaner' or more 'minimal' I guess

but I want my functionality back 😭

Yeah the navigation has sadly gotten worse, for example viewing votes now takes two taps and adding a bookmark takes three.

Another day another I don't like changes to the site post.

    • This change applies to those with beta testing settings turned on
    • Main reason: cleaner separation between comments. I don't like cluster of links, so less-used functions get moved to a secondary menu.
    • Another reason: anti-pattern to some of those less-used functions. Maybe some of you shouldn't check the votes of the comments that often…

      Denied.

I can submit ADASCHS on your behalf.

What’s the point of having beta testing if you don’t want peoples’ feedback?

Shouldn’t you be more concerned about what your users like than what you like?

Sorry I didn't know they were that prevalent. 🤷‍♂️

Thanks, I turned that off, problem sorted. 👍

    • Maybe some of you shouldn't check the votes of the comments that often

Don't make votes available to view then if that's what you think?

Telling users they shouldn't be using features made available to them is a strange way to interact with the users of your website.

It feels like there's an increasing disdain towards users. Which is an odd choice when their business wouldn't exist without users taking the time to post on their website.

OzBargainers have become a bunch of politically obsessed whiny profanities, I would have disdain for them too.
And don’t get me started on that guy that makes up acronyms…

And don’t get me started on that guy that makes up acronyms…

            Whats wrong with TGTMUA?

            • +1

@fantombloo: He was snoozing whilst Perez was plotting to gain favour with the board and have the current formatting scheme locked in.

              TGTMUA

Denied due to not adhering to the correct format.
Edit - as it doesn’t contain anything relating to Another Day or Horror Story the board have no legal authority to try to prevent you from using that. Just don’t tell them I told you.

Agreed, I remembered having this chat, also with you: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/16921181/redir

And I was defending them whilst I did find the reply from the mod a little strange. Hopefully it's not a pattern forming.

          • +1

@onetwothreefour: Yeah I totally understood the mod's stance on the issue. It was the attitude attached that I didn't like.

      • Another reason: anti-pattern to some of those less-used functions. Maybe some of you shouldn't check the votes of the comments that often…

Yeah I had a feeling this was one of the reasons when I saw the change, and I don't disagree.

Don't make votes available to view then if that's what you think?

Nah, it sounds like the goal is to permit it, but to discourage its use - in which case this is a happy medium, like an additional degree of seperation. It's a bit like cigarettes being hidden behind the counter. They're still there to buy, just no longer in plain sight.

        • but to discourage its use

Why? Is https://www.ozbargain.com.au/ozbapi/comment/17006877/listvot… really putting that much of a strain on their servers? If so, that's concerning…

          • +2

            @PainToad:

            Why?

I doubt it's for technical/bandwidth reasons. You're right, that would be concerning.

My interpretation (and my basis for saying I don't disagree with it) is more for social/psychological reasons. It's trying to foster more genuine discourse by discouraging social validation loops. I reckon that people who compulsively check the voting breakdown are more likely to comment performatively, because they're more worried about how what they're saying will be received.

I’d argue that Reddit (and all social platforms probably) suffer from the same issue. A huge portion of users aren’t there to talk - they’re there to be seen talking and to chase validation and attention.

You ideally want people to be genuine and less performative when they comment. And obviously this change isn't any kind of silver bullet to that end, but it's probably a small step in the right direction. Just my 2 cents.

@mboy: Then get rid of comment voting in general.

Obviously you still need comment voting for revoking neg votes. This would be solved by allocating a comment as a neg justification and only allowing voting on that single comment.

I’ve suggested allocating comments as vote justification before because votes can be revoked for a comment being voted down that has no relation to the deal neg.

Or just get rid of community revoking of neg votes. If it’s not a valid neg it can be reported. If it is, why should other members be able to remove a legitimate vote.

I like the new dotted line and to separate different comment threads.

I don’t like the functions hidden behind a menu. The small, light grey text isn’t that distracting.
