I thought the first game was hilariously bad, and I feel like I’m taking crazy pills when people say they love it. I stopped and checked multiple times that people were talking about the same game because I couldn’t fathom how bad the writing was.

I personally enjoyed it, I really liked the characters.

I think you'd definitely be in the minority. I'm curious to know what about the writing you thought was "hilariously bad". Granted it's been 13 years since I played it so I could be remembering it with rose-tinted glasses.

To me it felt like a B-grade movie, the writing was cheesy and the voice acting was poor. I was playing The Last of Us at the same time so the difference in writing stuck out like a sore thumb.

Lets be fair a 20 million game will have a significant advantage over a 1-5 million dollar one.

Also when googling I cant believe they had a 220 million dollar budget for the The Last of Us Part II

@MilkDrinker: I know right, it's an unfair comparison - mocap with the actors playing off each other compared to the Telltale actors probably recording their dialogue separately. It's like comparing an indie stage play to a Hollywood blockbuster. They’re both powerful storytelling mediums, but they aim for different kinds of emotional resonance. The Walking Dead’s strength is in its intimacy, moral choice, and raw emotion, not cinematic realism.

@MilkDrinker: Sure, but plenty of other non-AAA games manage not to have hamfisted writing and voice acting.

        • The games aren't perfect but I definitely would not fault the voice acting or the writing. In fact I think the voice acting was top notch (hence my comment about the ending of the first game).

IIRC the game won a bunch of awards for its writing and voice acting.

      Yeah, I loved it.
      Is it perfect?
      No
But the story is quite good (much better than the TV series), I thought the acting was quite good, and overall all the Telltale games are pretty good IMO.
At $7.35 it's an absolute bargain for whoever has never played it and wants to spend a few hours per episode to enjoy TWD more in the style of the comics.

$10 to avoid the toxic steam ponies? Bargain.

    • +3

Why would you pay an extra $10 for it when you don't have to?

  • Huh already in my library, definitely have to replay this!

  • The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series contains all 4 Seasons, 400 Days, and The Walking Dead: Michonne, which includes over 50 hours of gameplay across 23 unique episodes.

Good value. It'll be perfect for flights on the Steamdeck.

    • +6

Never thought of it. Now I just need to book 50 hours worth of flight and need to buy a steam deck.

Haven't personally played this, but did watch playthroughs for all the games ever since season 1 was released back in 2012 (minus Michonne). Very much like an interactive movie and had a great time. The stories and acting in these games are a hell of a lot better than the actual show, too, that's for sure.

  • Just bought it for the positive reviews, hope its worth it whenever i get to play it.

    • +1

      Each episode is quite short.
      Well worth your time IMO

For anyone else wondering what's new in the definitive version

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series contains all 4 Seasons, 400 Days, and The Walking Dead: Michonne

Graphical Enhancements: “Graphic Black” art style brings Season 4’s enhanced visual style to all previous seasons of the acclaimed series. Will also include full dynamic lighting to episodes that previously did not receive this upgrade

Gameplay Improvements: Character performances, lip syncing, and other gameplay and UI enhancements make this the definitive Telltale’s The Walking Dead experience

I figured they would offer a discount to owners of the originals but I guess not. The sale price is good though for under $10 you certainly can't complain.

I really liked Telltales Kings Quest & Sam n Max reboots, it's a shame that they went crazy and over leveraged their studio by taking on so many IPs at once and had to cancel everything except TWD. I thought they did a good job at modern adventure games.

Daedalic are the gold standard for adventure games now, really looking forward to their Star Trek: Voyager game.

    • Huh? What Telltale Kings Quest game? If you're talking about the 2015 Kings Quest, that was made by the Odd Gentlemen. Telltale had nothing to do with it.
