220

Australian Computer Traders special - price reduced by $100 over previous listing
11th gen cpu with 16gb of ram and 14" screen
Refurb Grade A - a bit hit and miss but ACT has a reasonable rep here for warranty returns I believe
So battery should be above 80% and thus 6 hours use but ymmv
Ram not soldered and can be upgraded to 64gb max - ACT will double to 32gb for $99
New purchasers (or those who register a new account with a different email address) can get a $10 sign up discount

Pretty much exactly what you should buy a kid starting high School next year - or any other office type use really

  • Were these used for enterprises laptops?

    • +2

don't know for sure - but most bulk refurbs would be I presume

      • +1

Generally most are ex-corporate. If you're unlucky, then they're ex-school.

  • This Acer also on special with similar specs except ram is 8gb - but upgradeable, although ACT not offering to do it for you
    Acer Travelmate Spin

    • damn oos

      • yeah seems we OzBargained that deal

  • +2

errr i dont think that is a good price not even decent in almost 2026 but maybe im wrong

    • +1

Most lappies in the <$400 range with any sort of warranty are 8th gen and maybe 8gb ram
This 11th gen is significantly better than that average

That said I don't completely disagre emate - $299 like the Acer with 16gb of ram would be a no brainer

This would be a good deal if the price is similar to the 5520 in this deal - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/925544.

I got one of the 5520 and the unit I got was in good nic. I'm using it for browsing and youtube.

    .

    • Agree that was a good price - well bargained
The 14" often RRP higher than 15.6" and thus refurb cost higher too
      And the 5520 wouldn't suit a student

      • +1

Do you think touch screen useful for students?

        • +2

I personally think it is, but only if the screen brightness is good enough for it to be used in a bit more sun light. Touch screen is very useful for when they need to move around a bit more.

    • +1

      what as the battery level?

      also and scratches anywhere?

      • Bit of a lucky dip - usually 80% plus - but see other comments

  • +2

I got a Latitude 5420 from their $199 Grade B offering few months ago. Except for some scratched paint on the back, laptop was in excellent condition. Battery health was around 90%.

    • OK wow - that's a good price - same processor and ram?

      • +1

Yes, exact same specs. No wonder that deal got over 200 likes.

        • Team ACT, pls consider bringing this deal back…

          I see it's priced $369 now
          .

          • +1

@w1nthrophy: There is a large quantity, and pricing like this won't be repeated again. $199 is a steal.

            Sorry mate

      • +3

        that's a better deal

$190 extra for same thing feels like overpaying now

this claims A grade but others got a range of grades in that deal so I don't think ACT actually grades them properly

With how hit and miss these guys are I'd only buy from their ebay store with ebay Plus for the free and easy returns..

(I've purchased from them 8 times I think, and only once received an 'as described' item, lol, I've had wrong CPU, wrong RAM, stuffed USB ports, stuffed battery, HDD rather than SSD, and so on, buyer beware!.. Their claimed "refurb" process is a wipe over and mirror on the latest OS, more often than not they don't even look inside, check the specs, or evict the dust bunnies)

    • Yep, ACT are trash, @Calmago takes a bunch of OzBargainers for a ride every time

The only problem with these is that even with a new battery , they will be lucky to last the whole school day.
I guess can hook up a powerbank when needed.

    • According to Google there are 42kw and 63kw battery models
New the 42kw does up to 10 hours - used I would presume half that or better
5-6 hours probably gets most students through the day
Buy a new after-market 63kw battery and you might get 2 days on a charge

      • "up to" is BS. I got the once-42Wh (kW is more like my car) from the $199 deal, and it gets 2-3 hours if lucky.

I might try an aftermarket 3-cell, so it can go untethered.
My Macbook claims "up to 18 hr", really 8 hrs, which is great.

        • Do a battery test and see how much capacity you have
Dell claimed 18 hours for the 42kwh battery but the reviews said 10 hours for office work which I agree is more realistic
I still say 5420 with around 80% capacity battery will get a student a whole school day which is 4-5 hours of actual use

Macbook with proprietary hardware get much better battery life - genuine 15-20hours on the new M chips
But they aren't sub $400 either

          • @Noblejoker: Battery reports 24Wh = 57% of original capacity. I set brightness at 50% on the log scale, while kids can do it dimmer.
The seller had swapped out the ram and ssd for "valuetech" - could that make a difference?

Anyway, I have a new laptop now, and the Dell is relegated to desk duty. Is great for Linux, aside from power management.

            • @bargaino: You probaby get 3 hours now, maybe less on Linux
With a new battery at around $50 you would easily get a school day 5-6 hours on WIndows I expect

  • +1

Thoroughly check your laptop and battery as ACT does nothing other than a quick rag wipe-over and reset windows. They don't check anything and there is no QA.
Their aftersales service is excellent though.

    • From he feedback the customer is QA. If it doesn`t pass send it back.

  • +4

Nah, didn't get a good one last time.
Ordered a Grade A, but got more of a Grade B.

    • do you have pics of why it is Grade B ?
      was it $199 deal?
