Why would someone keep the rice on warm for 24 hrs?

Just to call it shit here

Chinese people often use the keep warm function and go back to the rice cooker throughout day as rice is staple part of their diet.

@freemoneyhunter: I'm Chinese and I can confirm we never do that. There's a new tech called a microwave. Time to get one my friend.

@freemoneyhunter: Not true. No one I know would keep their rice warm for an entire day in the rice cooker - even before the power bills got as expensive as it is today.

@anonym: keeping it warm for an entire day would have removed the moisture in the rice, it would not be edible.

@freemoneyhunter: I'm Chinese too, I don't do that, I also don't know any other Chinese people who do that.
What I do is I have a rice cooker with fast warm up function, so when I have some cold left over rice, I can just top it up with small amount of water, then press a button and the rice cooker will warm it up in like 5 mins, it's pretty handy, this rice cooker I got it from taobao so I don't know if its available to buy here. However, if the rice is day or two old, I just throw it out and cook a new cup.
If the cooker has a warmer function and it's used through out the day, the rice itself would have dried out and not edible, I don't think its meant to be used in that way.

To harden up their gut bacterial before travelling overseas maybe…. Bacillus cereus!

I returned it because it didn't keep the rice warm long enough, way too short imo.
Returned this and got a tiger induction JPW-G18A.
Keeps it warm until I say so. We don't toss rice out..You would toss it out if you have a pos rice cooker, the tiger isn't a pos but isn't ozb cheap at all
I went from a -tiger jaxs18a which lasted about 3 years? To a kmart pos, it's so bad in terms of keeping rice warm and doing anything like kfc rice, then back to a tiger.
Actually bought the Hello Kitty Tiger cooker but it was a US plug from Amazon au..

Just in case I want to eat some rice but I don't have, or don't want to use a microwave.

If you leave rice on warm for longer than 24hrs, the rice is dried out completely.
Don't ALL rice cookers?

There’s vacuum sealed rice cookers (pressure cookers) and normal rice cookers which have vents and will dry out the longer you leave it there

@viper8548: Ok well that's gross, rice that has been kept warm for 24 hours should be tossed out. Anyhow its a sub $40 rice cooker, the $300 your saved can go a long way to making fresh rice each day.

@JimmyF: We dont tell you how to eat sandwich or pasta, so dont go teaching Asians how to eat rice. Just go Asia and see how long rice can be preserved with a good cooker. Then maybe you'll open your eyes, Jamie Oliver :)

so dont go teaching Asians how to eat rice
They can eat rice however they want, but my comments are about food safety. Anything kept 'warm' for 24 hours will be in the unsafe zone, and by food safety standards, isn't safe to consume. You know food poisoning from rice is pretty common.
But you do you.

@JimmyF: Thank you for your concern but the good rice cooker doesn't keep just rice "warm". Take a look at mine: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/531437/124932/img_3673…
I'm not saying you should keep rice this way for a week or two. But this is safe enough for at least 24hrs.
The key is a good rice cooker mate (not Kmart or Nutribullet), that's what I'm saying.

dont go teaching Asians how to eat rice
You're the dumbass spreading misconceptions about how "Asians eat rice". I'm from Asia, ate rice my whole life, and nobody I know keeps their rice on warm for 24 hours in the rice cooker. We like our rice freshly cooked whenever we can get it, and at worse we simply reheat it when speed and convenience is required.
Food safety is and always will be a concern, as well as energy costs, and let me tell ya, we are the pickiest eaters when it comes to the chew, texture, and moisture content of our preferred rice. Anything kept warm for 24 hours is not gonna cut it.

@anonym: Just because you or anyone you know dont do it, doesnt mean the rest will be the same mate.
Wanna play the food safety card? Take a look at my rice temperature: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/531437/124932/img_3673…
You either have a shit rice cooker that cant hold pass 24hrs, or you're not Asian.
Anymore misinformation to spread, dumbass :)?

@raperozbargain: You like your rice on warm for 24 hours that's fine.
You claiming "that's how Asians do it" is not. That's called spreading misinformation.
You either have a shit rice cooker that cant hold pass 24hrs, or you're not Asian.
Not everyone can afford a rice cooker that can keep rice warm for 24 hours without drying out, especially not in Asian countries. Well done for pointing out your privileged status just to stroke your own ego.

Just because you or anyone you know dont do it, doesnt mean the rest will be the same mate.
Based on the replies, it seems this comment is more fitting to you than all the Asians you try to speak for.

@JimmyF: Guy thinks he can speak for all Asians because he splurged on a good rice cooker…
The very act of opening and closing a rice cooker would dry out the rice inside, especially if it is kept warm.
We who grew up on rice have standards when it comes to our daily fare.
A jackass who can tolerate slop that's been kept warm for 24 hours has no right to speak for any of us.

I first thought it was a darth vader helmet!

I read this as Nutrigrain Rice cooker. That would be an interesting cross over.

Previous post and google reviews were pointing to the badly designed condensation lid inside and the difficulty to clean it mixed with good reviews but overall good, I guess it depends if you are a regular picky rice eater or not.

Picky rice eaters would find that a pressure cooker does a better job any day of the week

I confirm.

do you have any recommendations for a good pressure cooker for a beginner?

@srshk: If you're looking for a reasonably priced option, I suggest the Heller HPC1000 (6 litre). The reason why I like it is because it has a stainless steel inner bowl and the lid could be taken off for cleaning. This cooker may lack some features offered by expensive (read many times the money) ones from cuckoo or tiger, etc. but if you get the rice to water ratio correct, and thoroughly rinse the rice beforehand, it does a fantastic job. At least 5 others have purchased in my friends/family circle based on my recommendation and they're all very happy with it.
I also have several other gas pressure cookers but the advantage with electric ones is that you don't have to stand around and baby it. You could even set a delay program and cook various other things. The heller one I mentioned could be readily had for $150, and sometimes on sale for $120 ish. Search everywhere, you might get a good deal.
Get good with it, and perhaps you'll never need a more expensive one. My HPC1000 is now about 5 years old and does a fantastic job to this day. I've used it on almost every day except for when I go away on vacations.

@CocaKoala: Can you share your ratio and settings please? I’ve never tried rice in mine but keen to give it a go.

@stratbargain: The rice to water ratio depends on the type of rice. For example, when I cook basmati I use 1.5x water. So if I cooked two cups of rice, I will be using 3 cups of water. There are no other settings to change in this cooker and you could directly press the "rice" button.
In fact, those buttons don't do more than just selecting how long the cooker cooks (rice would cook for 7 minutes for instance). You could reduce or increase this time if required. For example, if I was cooking rice for some kind of a pilaf (pulav) I would increase the soak time by a few minutes and decrease the cook time by a minute.
Just give it a go and you will figure out what exactly works for you very quickly.

@CocaKoala: Don't know how legit this site is but $80 + shipping here: https://www.crazysales.com.au/online-heller-6l-electric-digi…

@BrianDeHanda: Yeah that seems like a pretty good price, mate. I would consider it if I wanted one given that they accept credit cards (I'll probably generate a temp card and use it). I can always lodge a chargeback if they tried anything funny.

Picky with chopsticks

order got cancelled

Why?

We bought it last year and find it makes really good rice.

is it easy to clean?

Takes 40 mins to cook 2 cups of rice. Is this normal for rice cookers?

That's pretty slow, but probably standard for this type of "smart" rice cookers. My Kambrook Express Rice Cooker which has a more traditional design (i.e. less intelligent) takes about ~25 minutes for 3 cups of rice.

Normally has quick cook @ 20-25mins

Not this unit

I meant "normally" as in rice cookers in general, not this unit

guess it's finally time to retire Sunbeam rice cooker older than 2 of my children combined

Cheers OP! 🍻

Got it from Target during Boxing Day sales last year, love it, cooks rice really well but it takes quite a bit longer than a normal rice cooker

is the top lid easy to clean?

Not remove able, it would be the same with all current model. I would prefer the top lid that can be separated

That doesn't sound good. I assumed it could be removed and I ordered before reading this comment. Sounds like it might be a pain, but fingers crossed it's a non-issue

Dupe

perfect for single asian, need rice a lot of the time and steam stuff often. But i dont think ill pull the trigger because its slow apparently. I love the modern look of it would be nice replacing my old rice cooker and not needing to take out a pot and steamer rack just to steam stuff, takes up space both kitchen and drying rack

Order got cancelled out of stock

possibly price match at good guys

My order is ready for pick up at Vic Park, WA. Thanks OP

"Everygrain" because here at nutribullet we make sure our cookers cook every grain.

out of stock everywhere now

Kmart cancelled my order but the good guys price matched. Stacked with a targeted $20 off voucher too so got this down to 19

How did you get GG to price match an OOS item?

My local kmart still had it instock online. Even tho they cancelled my order because it was oos…

Order cancelled

their stock system is a shxt show.
walk in store and no stock? order click and collect on the spot and it magically is there.
