Short Term Work in Brisbane?

I have a friend in QLD in quite a dire situation. Shes waiting for a new IT job to start, but due to all the employment preamble its going to be another 8 weeks and she is already down to borrowing money for food, and I've already given $600 myself that I am happy to lose, and am trying to avoid giving more which I would also quite likely never see back.

Can anyone recommend work that she'd be able to find & start within a few days, beyond super heavy labouring and the expected comedy answers of OF and the Wendy's parking lot?

I've mentioned uber Eats to her, but that is basically just trading your car's value for short term money while running pretty high expenses, so an actual employment job would be much better.

There are some food delivery gig jobs that don't require a car and can be done on e-bike.

is basically just trading your car's value for short term money

Short term money is exactly what she needs.. When you are relying on your friends to be able to even eat you can't really be complaining about future depreciation of your car.

Cant disagree with that, I'd be doing it long before i ran out of money myself, but I have already suggested it and the idea doesnt seem to have been entertained, so I'm just trying to throw all other options in her direction at this stage.

Ask in local community Facebook if anyone needs gardening clean up, dog walked, older school kids babysit etc

  • Traffic control.

    Try AATM

  • Why wouldn't you see a loan paid back? If they are a mooch, then it is unlikely they will do what is needed to earn short term cash. ie get hands dirty cleaning and gardening, or even some picking.

    • A pattern of erratic behaviour, I'm sure she intends to repay it, but I also forsee further self-inflicted difficulties within 6 months

  • so why wont she pay you back when they get a job?…. get her to do $600 worth of work around the house. she a leech or something?.

    • I'm not in QLD myself.
There is a pattern of erratic behaviour though, that's all I can say.. some people are very hard to help when they don't even realise they are their own main problem.

Night fill at Woolies or Coles. Have relatives that work there and it is amazing how many people just don't show up for shifts.

    They're quite desperate for them.

    • I'll tell her that, but I had the opposite result in Melbourne.

Worked for Coles in the past for 4+ years as checkout supervisor and in the freezer aisle etc. Tried to apply recently at a large store near me and first when I turned up for the interview, no one knew I was coming, and basically took me out the back to ask about who I was and expected me to have brought my resume as their system had absolutely no record of me at all even though I had gone through several rounds of online crap.

Ultimately they weren't interested in me at all because I'm not 17 was the gist of it

  • Wish they'd bring back the CES short employment service.
Used to be one in major cities, and it dealt with employers and workers just looking for labour.
They were a great facility for itinerant workers.

  • Can she wait tables? Pour a beer, mix a cocktail?

Reasonably good looking? Move fast on her feet?

    Speak a second language?

Don't know bris, but Gold Coast hiring native Japanese speakers off the beach and getting them going whilst working out all the details later => large hotels particularly

One girl yesterday walked off day at beach in bikini & short shorts and thongs, tried to hand resume to front office, front office called dude out back, interview, start date following morning, just because she could speak Japanese.

Other girl last week, not quite the whirwind, but extra quick turnaround, working in VIP housekeeping.

  • Busking?

Approach business, need a job (kitchen hand?), will work two shifts free but feed me, if I'm good, employ me.

Not allowed to employ for free, but they may exchange desperate for great work ethic, and give you a crack.

  • Google found me these. I have no idea what her quals are or where in bris she is
