So how much we have to pay if cancelling on day 1?

    • +1

      Following

    • +2

Cancellation Fee is now $1,000 pro rata for 23 months so $958.33

      • Not $800 anymore?!

      • -4

Still cheap. Thats all 958 and gt an iphone?

        • +1

Sorry, it's confusing. If they give a $1200 discount on a $2000 phone, it means you will be in $800 debt. Plus the cancellation fee, which will be for the 24-month SIM card contract, makes it the same price as what it is. Am I correct?

          • +2

            @danaahm: No idea. Confusing.

            • +26

@McMaferMur: You end up with a $241.67 discount.

              Examples:
              Base 17 Pro @ $1999
              Cancellation fee @ $958.33
              Deal discount @ $1200

              1999 - 1200 = 799 out of pocket
              958.33 + 799 = 1757.33 total cost
              1999 - 1757.33 = $241.67

              Base spec @ 1399:

              1399 - 1200 = 199 out of pocket
              958.33 + 199 = 1157.33 total cost
              1399 - 1157.33 = 241.67 discount

              • +13

@OZBMate8911: Plus the $99 of the first month. If you consider that those $1200 could be paid with gift cards if you don’t take this offer, you could save $120 on them. I don’t think you can pay the plan and cancellation fee with gift cards, so that brings your profit down to just $22.67. Not worth the headache.

By the way, the offer has changed overnight and now includes a doorbell supposedly worth $149. So that is probably the only advantage in taking this offer, but only if you are already in the market for a doorbell.

              • +3

@OZBMate8911: For a credit check? No thanks. Just apply for those CC deals with a few hundred dollars of cashback.

              • +1

@OZBMate8911: You are missing the first month $99 payment in this calculation, which is charged upfront when at the time of signing up for the plan.

      • +1

        not a deal then

  • +1

Gift card offer ends 29/10/25 according to the page

    • Wth thats today?

    • +3

Ends 5/11/25 according to the email I got

    • +2

Offer valid until 11:59PM AEDT 05/11/25 unless otherwise specified.

    • Yeah, that offer ended last night, the new one now includes a doorbell and ends 5/11.

  • +1

Can we do that thing where we cancel and pay the fee?

          Deception and dishonesty

          • @U30004: Without going into legal interpretation (leave that to legal practitioners and the court), I doubt you understand a layman's take on deception and dishonesty.

But then, many JB staff have the same problem (or do you work there too?).

If anything, JB is in more of position to act in a deceptive and dishonest manner. In fact, I have been misled by JB store on numerous occasions - of course, not letting them getting away with it. One was led to a civil dispute with cost on my end recovered. Another was close to a police report until the store "manager" had time to google and figured it is possibly a criminal offence in NSW.

Having said the above, most JB staff are a delight to deal with, except for a few uneducated and like to take the spirit of contract and consumer law into their own interpretation. (JB corporate is partly to be blamed to boost sales with such complicated sales campaigns)

          • +1

@U30004: This offer has been revised by Telstra recently to bump up the early termination fee. The old deal with lower termination fee was around for years. JB staff generally remind you of the early termination fee and inform you that you can terminate early by paying that fee. JB mobile staff / Telstra mobile staff are very efficient and processing these early termination (it's been done so many times).

There is also a credit check and if you keep doing that multiple times, Telstra will not approve the credit check. Also, Telstra is a bit fussy on the credit check (if there isn't enough credit history on your credit report, Telstra does decline to let you sign up).

        • +2

How is this even relevant??? It’s a commercial contract and you’re completely within your rights to cancel and pay the agreed fee.

    • -1

The idea of this deal is for people to sign up and keep the plan for the whole 24 months, we can't expect to go back as the way it was. There's no incentives for JB and Telstra.

  • I see "Get a $1100 JB Gift Card + a Ring Battery Video Doorbell" offer on the page

  • -5

    iphones not selling

    • +11

I enjoy shitting on whatever the latest overpriced trendy brand is as well,

But they do these deals all the time, for every major phone tbh. Wouldn't read into it that much.

    • +1

      oos literally everywhere

    • +1

Maybe. Looks like Xiaomi Pro max just killed iphone 😀.

Apple's got some major changes to do, either stop Price gouging or do some Serious upgrades

      • +5

        You’re funny.

        • +3

Youre holding the phone wrong you plebian fools.

      • The top Xiaomi phones never get released in Australia, e.g. 14 Ultra, 15 Ultra.

      • The western country folks dont give a shit about xiaomi. I am yet to see a single person with xiaomi phone (though we are in east).

        • Now they Don't, Let's see in another 5 years

          • @Bretttick: I am an asian and I have used MI3 Mi5 and P30 Pro and I am myself considering a Samsung for my next phone for more security and longer updates path. So nothings gonna change much for the westerners. The only thing I see coming is sactions from US if Xiaomi/oppo etc make more sales.

      • Which Aussie retailers stock this phone?

        • JB Haiya Faiya

        • -2

No one, did I say Aussie Retailers sell this?
          It's China only……….. For Now

    • +1

If you believe the news, sounds like they are selling

"Specific total unit sales for the iPhone 17 are not yet public, but early reports from October 2025 indicate strong performance, with sales surpassing the iPhone 16 by 14% in China and the U.S. during the first 10 days"

      • -1

Sales = $$ price not the total number.

With rising prices each year, one would expect sales to be higher even if the same amount of units were sold as last year.

        • I’m not talking about sales or dollars, the posted said iPhones not selling, obviously they are.

  • +12

$1057 cancellation cost including one month. Not a deal.

  • +8

This can only be a 'deal' when you churn straight after receiving the benefits, right?

    Otherwise:
$1,200 JB credit worths $1,080 (at most) and you are essentially paying $648 yearly plan with excessive data for 2 years. ($99 x 24 - 1080)/2
At Ozbargain, if you are spending more than $300 a year for your mobile plan, mate, you need to hand in your Ozb badge!

    • +4

They’re leveraging people who can claim the exaggerated service fee on their employer and/or ATO. “You do the sneaky and we’ll slip you $1200 in gift cards or a free phone”.

      • +3

Exactly — some people get fully reimbursed for their mobile service by their employer, while others claim their $99-per-month mobile plan as a tax deduction. In addition, since the phone has its own invoice showing the full price, they can also claim the phone itself as a work-related expense and receive a deduction for it.

        • ATO is slowly (very slow) auditing a lot of the excessive claims.

Some are rather active on ozbargain - I suspect.

A mate got pulled up and had to pull out all paperwork for some years. Not easy questions on some questionable claims.

          • @SetTheFaqUp: Good to knkow, but even for ABN registered businesses? or sole trader or payg employees you mean?

            • @dealt: Well. Individuals got audited for excessive expense claims and CGT from shares sold not properly declared.

Also been told by the accountant that his peer's (accountant) clients got pulled up on audits - looks like the dodgy accountant was targeted.

Sold trader can also be abn registered business and no idea how ATO's picks their sample/target.

I have had some quite large deductions as a salaried employee for a long time, not an issue to-date. But I do have all documents (incl diary entries too) supporting all the claims, even at the event of an audit, will just be a matter of extracting the folder for the year of review. Most people don't keept their tax record on this manner.

        • as a sole trader I could potentially claim the mobile plan (or a large portion of it) but what would be the point when current plan is $39/month which gives me all I need, and I can claim the handset as tax deduction?

          • @sydneygirl: you got a free doorbell… Then you and me can rock a bell…You can ring my bell, ring my bell…XD

  • Are they gonna patch the day 1 cancellation antics?

    • +2

If you do the math.. it's not really much of a deal at this point.. so I'd say it's already fixed..

You get 1200 and you pay 1057 cancellation fee.. all in all you get a 147 dollar discount..

      • +4

Didn’t know the numbers. Better off use 10% gift card

      • plus the 149$ ring door bell camera now

  • +5

Got this deal couple days ago. Final cost $1850 for 17 pro max 256gb. Not too bad, and I will get more back for TRS later.

    • The trs will be from the price on your invoice. How much is it the invoice?

    • What’s the breakdown of the cost? For that price I may bite

      • $2199 - $1200 - $100 (10% off TCN Teen gift cards to pay the remaining $999 balance) + $958 (cancellation). I also got the $99 monthly charge refunded.

        • How difficult was it to get the 99 initial monthly charge refunded? I heard it's very hit or miss from other ozbargainers.

          • @pixelator: Yeah, depends on the person you chat with on Telstra page. You can always reconnect to a different person and try.

            • @hawkeye93: do you cancel on day 1 or day 29?

              • @sydneygirl: I just purchase last week, not even 1 week yet. You can cancel anytime before end of 1st month and make sure not using it, to get $99 back.

    • +1

You must declare any goods you bring back to Australia, for which a TRS claim was made by you or another person when the goods left Australia
On returning to Australia, you must declare the goods at Question 3 on your Incoming Passenger Card (IPC)
If you bring goods back into Australia for which a GST refund via the TRS has been claimed, the goods must be declared. If their total value (combined with any other overseas or /duty free purchases) exceeds the passenger concession allowance, you may need to pay any applicable GST and/or duty.
Penalties may apply if you fail to declare these items.

      • +5

You must also wait at the kerb for the little green man even at 2AM when there are no cars around.

      • How they will get to know if we bringing the product back to the country..?

        • That's what the private room at customs is for when they search every nook and cranny for that iPhone you claimed trs on

        • Maybe they can check on the computer at the luggage scan area.

      • Ahahahahahaha bro, 2025 now and who tf do that. 🤣🤣🤣

      • Yeah I did declare for previous deals. Always come with family so pool limit is way over phone cost.

    • Don't they have to see the product in question before giving you the gst portion? What if you give the receipt whilst the phone is in your hand or the packaging is open?

      • +1

Does not have to be brand new. You just need to show the phone to them. They don’t even bother checking the IMEI or serial number.

    • Are you travelling solo? If yes the TRS limit is $900 per person from memory if you are bringing it back with you.

      • Does that mean you don't need to declare if you have 2 travellers?

        • +2

Yes. The limited is combined. But you could also just hand your phone to your travel buddy as you re-enter Australia if you’re really paranoid. Reality is that no one bats an eyelid regarding TRS stuff on your return home

          • -2

@SirFrankGrimes: Boarder security. Some dude got pulled up and boarder force even highlighted the number of in/outbound trips he's taken and what's claimed.

      • Travelling with my family so 900x3= $2700 pool limit

    • @hawkeye93 this deal was starting few days ago not yesterday?

      • I saw it in store accidentally last weekend. Looks like it has been extended.

    • gonna need a breakdown for this because the math ain't mathing.

If its repeatable, I'm returning my Iphone 17 for this!

      • $2199 - $1200 - $100 (10% off TCN Teen gift cards to pay the remaining $999 balance) + $958 (cancellation). I also got the $99 monthly charge refunded.

  • +1

Any updates on porting out (min days?) vs getting a new number and changing to our old number after getting the deal? Does that still work?

    • Also interested in minimum days ported out. Currently with Jbhifi/Telstra

      • I’ve used this deal 10+ times. I always just ask for a new number and they don’t seem to care
