400$ a year sub is crazy when most people will only use it to track steps at the end of the day

    • Agreed. I'm just gonna try the one month for free. To track sleeping and gym and heart rate.

      • Unless you are a gymrat/athlete and you have a need to actually track your min max data I've had a galaxy watch for 8+ years now not perfect but tracks my steps and sleep pretty well, HR can be a bit hit and miss.

Would recommend that if you can find a cheap one refurbed or second hand

I've also abused the hell out of it doing manual labour and it's still going strong glass face is fine almost immaclutate really, just scratches here and there on the casing

    • +2

Agreed, they get you with the sub not the device cost.
It's pretty steep unless you are into serious training etc.

Not really a deal, standard offer.

I'd recommend getting a Fitbit Charge 6/5 for under $160. Pretty minimal, 7 day battery, GPS, contactless payment (NFC). Mine stays on and can still wear normal watches as well.

  • a lot of youtubers mentioned a lot of shite about this brand when I was having fitness tracker videos recommended to me constantly by the yt algorithm.

something about past devices meant to have lifetime full tracking/app support included from time of purchase, and they pulled that on them and suddenly required ongoing subscription. or something like that ymmv.

similar situation with Arlo cameras. they even wrote "Lifetime free cloud storage" on the box, then they pulled it from under them.

    • That's egregious. Most likely to maximize profitability

      • -2

well I don't know what egregious means but with Arlo it did happen after another corpo bought the company. not sure if that's the case with woop I think that didn't happen they just decided to pull it from past customers. lots of people unhappy.

        • Just wondering, what does your username mean? Is it a reference to something? I tried Googling "neck entry abort orgasm" but nothing comes up.

You have to cancel before the end of the month (not immediately) otherwise it's automatically renews, and then you need to return the 3rd hand device.

  • +3

How many returns do they get for them to have a stockpile of second/third/hundredth hand devices that they want to offload

  • +2

    This is their standard offer

    Points to note:
    * They never charge a device fee - you are paying a subscription for the app/service
    * If you cancel you lose access to the device / the data recorded about you
    * If you take up the trial you are given a refurb device (as mentioned in the post), however if you continue to a full membership you are not given a new device
    * If you want a new device, cancel the trial and return the device (possibly at your shipping expense, someone correct me) and buy a year membership as a new service
    * The top membership has ECG features - this is not available in the Australian market

These days there’s some real competition without subscription fees:
    * Polar Loop from $299
    * Amazefit Strap can be had around $170ish
    Possibly others too

    Scam company, beware.

Earlier (at the time of version 4) it was on their website that whenever they release version 5, everyone gets a new device for free given you have 6 months in your subscription.

As soon as they launched version 5 - they deleted that bit from T&C and no one got a new device.

Get an Apple Watch or Samsung Watch, at least you own something. With whoop, you never know when they change their T&C

PS - I had whoop for over 2+ years, but didn’t renew thereafter

    • Thanks for this info, what a rort

  • Keen to know the difference between this and similar designs from Polar/Amafit.

  • Reverse engineer and use offline for free
    https://github.com/bWanShiTong/reverse-engineering-whoop-pos…

    • Read that, now my head hurts. Could be my BP? lol

  • Doesn't a Fitbit watch do exactly the same thing? Why would we pay for subscription?

  • +1

Polar loop band is a great alternative if you don't want to support the rorts whoops been known for.

    • I’ve been reading the helio strap is better

      • Oh it is, just no local distributors yet

        • Are there any issues in purchasing from Amazon US or Germany?
I’m holding off for the special edition of it ever rolls out…

          • @Muscles: Do you know what the issues are? Is it just getting them delivered or during operation/functioning of the device?

  • I got a free 12m subscription while I was attempting to put together a partnership with my employer and whoop.
I ended up not using it for very long and canned the partnership, I didn't find the app that good and I really disliked the standard band, I am a bit sensory but unlike an apple watch or a Aura ring I couldn't wear the whoop in the shower or going for a swim because after the band got wet it stayed wet for ages and I found it super annoying, esspeically if you're showering before bed and then wearing a wet band into bed.
I beleive the app is now much improved and has more trackable activities (which is why I pulled the pin at the time).

  • I have been using whoop since April'25 and like it. However the cost is too much approx $399.
Here is a short summary based on my experience.

    Plus

    *No screen, hence no distraction
*Based on the various parameters, it calculates a Healthspan (which is quite motivating) and also shows pace of aging
*The Whoop coach ( integration with chatgpt) is mind blowing. I click on it every morning and it tells me how my sleep and recovery has been and let me commit to an activitiy for the day like run, swim or walk
*Journal feature - i like it as well, it shows the correlation of varioys activities like taking multivitamins and its impact on your recovery
*Battery is great lasting over 5-7 days
    * Polar loop, Amazfit bands are quite behind loop in their functionality and app features.

    Minus

*Cost is the single deterrent from new whoop users
*The accessories are expensive but you can buy cheap bands off temu and ali express
*When the band it wet, it takes time to dry it out.

In summary, will I renew Whoop for next year.
Yes if I dont buy a new sports watch and if I get a descent black Friday deal.
No if I buy a Garmin Venu 4/Forerunner or Coros Pace pro/3/4.

    • My fēnix 6X Pro Solar Smartwatch would last for a month, and had all the features I actually use on a smartwatch. The only annoying thing was that Garmin Pay didn't support any of my cards.

  • +1

I trialled Whoop last year to see what the hype was about. The app highlighted how undercooked Apple Health is, but I didn't like having to wear the Whoop band in addition to my Apple Watch, and overall it was way too expensive. There are apps like Bevel and Athlytic which are similar to Whoop, but use health data from Apple Watch or other fitness device. I use the free version of Bevel which I find sufficient, but otherwise I think the annual subscriptions are around $30-50 which is far more palatable.

I thought about the Whoop for sleep tracking, but ended up going with an Oura ring instead. I use a Garmin Vivoactive 5 for fitness stuff, but not a big fan of wearing a watch full time, so the Oura ring suits perfectly for what I need. Yes, it's got a (~$9/month) subscription, but after 1.5-2 years you'd be about on par with the pricing on the Whoop with roughly equivalent features (for sleep tracking) anyway.
