    Great Time to Purchase YEN

    Financial advice?

Do you have a Financial Services license?

  • +4

You might want to put a disclaimer that it is not a financial advice :)

With Sanae Takaichi's economic policy similar to Abe Shinzo's, who knows whether the YEN is going to dive further.

targetted for those going to japan

    • no I buy a lot of japanese items using a amazon jp account. often times the prices even after shipping/fees is cheaper than buying from amazon jp via amazon au.

Interesting - do you use a shipping forwarding service to get your items from Japan > Australia? If so, do you mind advising which one you use?

I know there are some items are that exist on amazon jp and of which are also available internationally (via amazon.com.au), but I'm assuming from your post you actually have an amazon JP account and manage to get it shipped to Aus?

I ask because I am keen on buying some weightlifting shoes of which are available amazon JP - but do not ship internationally. I actually managed to buy a pair when I was in Japan last, but unfortunately, they were a tad too tight and I didn't have time to exchange

        • I'm assuming from your post you actually have an amazon JP account and manage to get it shipped to Aus?

          yes. what I did was:

          1. go to amazon jp in PC browser
          2. create an account (you can use the same email as your amazon au account. everything will be in japanese, I used my phone to translate and navigate).
          3. this was the part where it only worked one way, I think I added my address first in australia. then I added payment method (card). <—- if this order doesnt work, try adding payment method first, then address second.

then you will see delivery fees to your location next to the price of every item (the larger the item the delivery becomes expensive very quickly, but I order mostly smaller to medium items). I often bundle items together and shipping gets a little cheaper (for smaller items it doesn't add up shipping like 1 + 1 + 1, i usually save about 10%~20%).

keep in mind I did this over a year ago. I'm not sure now if you will be able to add a au address currently, I noticed amazon au has integrated amazon jp items a lot more recently.

but since I already have a jp account with a au address I can still make orders.

(also if you are often using the app, it's a bit of a run around to switch between AU and JP every time and sign in and out (app doesn't allow you to sign in with more than 1 account). you have to sign out, switch it to JP (and it always bugs out at this stage if you try to sign in, you have to fully close the app from app switcher, then open it again before you sign in with your jp account), sign in.

then the same if switching back to AU, sign out, switch country back to AU, close the app fully from app switcher, open app, sign in with AU account) <—- it sounds like a nightmare but after you do it a couple times you can do it 100% without thinking.

which are available amazon JP - but do not ship internationally.

yes this is another reason I use it. plenty items on amazon jp that ship to australia. but browsing from amazon au you get a very limited selection.

I also am pretty intrigued by this comment with no further information to support it

      • Me when I lie

      • not sure why you mention wise?

I didn't mention that. I check by typing it in google search regularly and just seeing it go up and down.

as I said in the other comment I check for shopping stuff from japan. not trying to invest in anything and I can't afford to go on holiday there.

If this post needs a disclaimer, most of the posts and replies here should need disclaimers.

    • woww did not know ozb had it's own version of wallstreetbets. 😂

  • 101 yen now.

  • Geez not bad!

  • I went to Japan mid last year and it was pretty much exactly the same (actually better!). I really wouldn't overthink it.

You reckon 1-2% difference is going to a deal breaker for you?

    • In 2024 from July to August the yen dropped almost 10% so I'd say stability concerns are quite valid

Buy half now and half later if you are unsure

Unless you are transferring tens of thousands of dollars, really the difference is minimal
