It was probably close to the use by date.

Actually, I'm one of those people who look for the longest used by dates regardless of when I plan on eating it.
Sometimes these are up the back, sometimes they are not, but I check all used by dates before buying.

I don't buy any chicken from aldi I've had to return off chicken 3 or 4 times I think the chilled fridges arent cold enough.

I concur, I always find Aldi has issues with their chicken. Most of the time even the longest dated smells a bit off. I cannot imagine consuming them on the date of expiry. I don’t know if it due to their food handling practice, or buying practices. I think the same goes with Aldi’s fresh fruit and vegetables. Tend to find the quality fluctuates a lot more than Coles and Woolies. I have bought Rocket a few times and they were so stringy.

I've cooked two of these a week pretty consistently for the last 3 years and plenty of times I'll cook them on the day of expiry. Think I've thrown one out once?
Raw chicken can sometimes smell funny when its packed like this in its own juices. If it's actually gone off you'll know. If you catch yourself leaning in for a better whiff it's not off.

Unlike the Coles and Woolies ones, there is no mention if the chickens are hormone-free.

First I've heard or horny chicks at my local woolies and coles…

Decisions decisions…….free-range or hormone-free?

Chicken with huge biceps?

Chicken skipped leg days?

Anything about antibiotics. I think rather than hormones, we should all be concerned about antibiotics now. I presume cage of antibiotics but free range don’t need as many.

That's a good price for a whole free range chicken.
However, the last few times I bought "normal" bog-standard Aldi chicken, I've found it "smells" a bit funny. Not quite "off", but something that isn't that pleasant to my nose.
