The Sydney - Melbourne does not seem to be $9.99, but Melbourne to Sydney is.

    • +8

It's just sold out of discount rate for the day, other days have it.
Limited discount seats and then it reverts to normal price.

    • +14

      Good way to skip bail

    • Found Wed 14 Jan there are a few Sydney-Melb options for $9.99 :)

  • +22

Not bad considering there is free wifi and power outlets. Could effectively “wfh” for the day.
Better than the train which is still in the dark ages with no wifi

    • Any ideas how patchy the wifi is?

      • Not sure but going by my personal experience driving on those highways reception is pretty good. If they use Telstra it shouldn’t be a problem

      • +1

4G speed apparently, so it’s something, but probably not best to do conference calls on.

        • +39

Woe betide the joker who does a conference call on a bus.

          • +3

@caperite: Which Dylan song was that lyric from again?

            • @Meconium: It's actually a scene from the Batman x The Office crossover movie.

          • +4

@caperite: Watched someone do this recently and given the general mutterings of annoyance I and others were going to say something.

But then the loud discussion turned to a delicate HR matter and no-one intervened because it was way too fascinating.

        • +15

Another good reason for not taking calls might be to be considerate of other passengers on a 12 hour bus ride? I'd go crazy if half the passengers were taking calls all day!

          • @Sebajun: Yeah, it's bad enough with people watching movies and listening to music without headphones.

      • +1

Just as patchy as the cellular seeing as it runs on the same thing.

    • I can confirm the train is indeed in dark ages.

Never had train for 2nd time across Sydney and Melbourne again.

      • +10

I can confirm Australia are still in dark ages. We should have a high speed rail between Melbourne and Sydney. 3 hour travel. Then we might not even care about free wifi

        • +1

Dang I never thought of this. So when is the HSR going to be happened?

          • +5

@Mild October: Immediately after our politicians cease being self serving clowns, probably.

Currently scheduled for somewhere between the hell freeze and development of flying pigs.

Link to previous annual report with many entries describing "developing strategies" and "progressing approvals" etc etc etc
            https://media.caapp.com.au/pdf/8cnxw6/730cbe68-3d3d-493a-b85…

          • +7

@Mild October: I remember the first announcement of the SYD-MEL VFT - very fast train - which was to take three hours, run via Canberra and be finished in four or five years, costing a billion dollars. This was probably about 1982.

From then on there were postponements, new environmental impact studies, whole government departments, postponements, cancellations, multiple business case studies, line alignment changes to include Canberra, to not include Canberra, proposals to upgrade duplicate the current line with high speed electric rail, there was a MagLev version, tunnels, no tunnels, a fully enclosed version to protect wildlife, an open version, a joint venture with property developers to make inland cities such as Shepparton or Albury much bigger and create daily commute hubs to MEL.

Last I heard the costs were heading towards a few hundred billion dollars and the government were keen on getting those developers to pay by allocating land for them.

If the rollout of the NBN was bad, the fast rail project is an order of magnitude worse.

        • high speed rail never gonna happen, it is simply not cost effective. To make it cost effective they would have to constantly stop everywhere making that 3 hour trip 5+ hours. We simply don't have the population to support it at a reasonable price.

    • +21

Some might consider being uncontactable a feature rather than a bug.

      • +4

That's what I love about getting on a long-hall flight - having an excuse to be uncontactable for hours.
They now offer wifi onboard - why the hell would I want that?!?

        (I am so middle-aged)

        • +1

You still have to pay for the WiFi though! Even in business class BA the WiFi wasn't free for me. It's always a bit of a rip-off!

    • +2

Could effectively “wfh” for the day.

I doubt it, unless you're just answering just text-Emails.

      I'm pretty sure it's rate-limited access too,
and from memory Firefly Express bus (last year) had a constant, yet slow, Internet access.

Unless the buses are going to go the Starlink route, I don't expect fast internet connections either.

    • +14

Australia are in dark ages. We should have a high speed rail between Melbourne and Sydney. 3 hour travel. If we were run by Japanese they woulda delivered this 10 years ago. Yet we still think a bus that takes 12 hrs between the cities and costs $10 is cool LOL

      • +4

        Population of Japan: ~123 million.
Population of Melbourne + Sydney: ~11.5million
Average number of daily commuters on Japan bullet trains: ~430K
Average number of people who would be willing to regularly commute 3 hours each way between Melbourne and Sydney: not many.

It will never happen. we don't have the population density, and the distances are too far.

        • +5

Population of Tasmania 550,000. Population of Melbourne 5.3 million. Cost of proposed Tasmania stadium $1 billion.

Honestly, if we can justify a stadium then a hsr should be a no brainer.

          • +4

@tessel: A billion dollars isn't even the right order of magnitude for a high speed interstate rail.

Melbourne doesn't even have a short low speed rail to the airport.

            • @sareth: We've ten times less population than Melbourne and they can justify a stadium. A lot more people would use a hsr than a stadium. Yes, you are right a hsr would cost exponentially more but if we can justify a stadium that will further bankrupt Tasmania than a hsr which would be used by a lot more people isn't a terrible idea.

            • -3

@sareth: 59 tram + bus works fine to get to airport in Melbourne.

              • +2

@Its4me: No it doesn't. It's slow, indirect, and subject to traffic. Every single major airport in the world has a train line to its city for a reason.

          • +1

            @tessel: but aussies love sports!

          • +1

@tessel: Tasmania doesn't even a low speed railway lol

          • @tessel: Melbourne is 10 times the pop, building the high speed rail is equivalent of building 100+ of those $1 billion dollar stadiums. It would be equivalent to the simpsons monorail if ever built.

        • +4

The point is Australia's population is far too concentrated in Sydney and Melbourne and that's put pressure on infrastructure.

The real aim was always to open up regional cities and turn them into viable commute hubs into the big cities and offer more affordable housing in places like Bendigo, Shepparton, Goulburn and potentially further develop the Canberra/Queanbeyan region.

It would require trains with only a few stops on the way, but many regular services and while it would be be possible to go SYD-MEL - city to city, avoiding airport queues and hours of waiting, the real benefit would be in building serious population centres where there is plenty of water - central Victoria etc - and under an hour's commute into the major city when required.

      • Tokyo - Hokkaido is alays cheaper to fly!
And not all that line is electrified.
Maglev to Osaka: give it another 10 years…

    • Any good for Xbox cloud streaming?

      • no

    • +1

Pretty sure you'll be extremely cramped, far more so than on a train, and especially with services likely to be booked to capacity due to this promo.

  • +12

Damn. A competitor to the Murray’s for the Canberra to Sydney route

    • +3

I might have to come and say hi now. It’s cheap…

      • +2

Yeh but those are on par with the Murray’s prices

$9.99 is a solid promo. $41.98 after promo is still cheaper than Murray’s

      • Also Greyhound isn't so much to compete, but rather to have a stop for all the backpackers stopping off in Canberra from Sydney or Melbourne. COVID killed off the commuter service.

    • +1

Yep - I'm loving this, more competition is never a bad thing!

Pity, I am leaving CBR soon, so won't be able to take advantage of the CBR -> SYD airport promo for $9.99

      • -1

congratulations on making it out of the canberra bubble

  • +28

Is it a bus full of people on the no fly list?

    • +21

Some might say those are the most fun people.

    • -1

Is it a bus full of people on the no fly list?

      Chief Commissioner Mike Bush?

    • +1

More or less, those pesky sniffer dogs.
It's an "interesting" crowd when a transit coach pulls into a highway rest stop.

    • +1

they don't even check IDs for AU domestic flights. you can book under a fictitious name and they would not know

  • +3

I looked in March and some seats are $8.00 each way (+ service fee).

    • +2

Yeah, some are cheaper. But $9.99 is the max.

  • +1

    How much is it normally?

    • +7

$41.98 for Canberra to Sydney route

      • +2

        thanks

  • +3

    Nothing from Adelaide 😕

    • +2

      Correct.

    • +4

      Surely you mean RADelaide

    • +9

      Gotta keep 'em separated

    • +2

Nobody wants to leave Adelaide anyway.

      • +4

Or maybe Nobody wants to go there

  • +6

Flixbus is huge in Europe, and I have loved their bus services,
and I have been on their buses many times, in the last decade.

I am guessing Flixbus will bring the prices down, and give Murray's more competition,
but Firefly Express has been pretty good to me too, with their low prices between Sydney - Melbourne.

    • +7

I used Flixbus when I was in Europe and being a typical backpacker many years ago. Never had one bad thing to say about them, they always had their shit together and left on time as well. Happy they have arrived in Australia - more competition is never a bad thing

      • I used Flixbus when I was in Europe and being a typical backpacker many years ago.

My last time was in Europe in 2023, and the service was still smooth, as I had remembered them.

      • Sometimes finding the bus terminal was an impossible task, but FlixBus was always prompt and affordable, unlike DB trains! Very glad they are launching in AU.

    • +2

There's even a Flixtrain now! At least in Germany

      • Yes, used it a couple of years ago for a train from Basel to Berlin for EUR 7.99 per person! Somewhat older and more basic train than say Ouigo, but unbeatable price.

  • +1

    What are the seats like?

    • +1

They look pretty plush on the website. You also have the option to nab the extra seat next to you for a fee (not sure how much) for some extra room.

I've taken a few of these in Europe and it was a breezy experience. Though, after taking an 8 hour train ride in China earlier this year and feeling stir crazy after 3 hours, I'm not sure how much I want to do an 8 hour bus ride from Sydney to Albury 😬

Would be fine if you sleep, i guess

  • +9

    Good.

Now please bring RyanAir, EasyJet, Eurowings etc. to Australia.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Booked trip to Canberra from Melbourne for Australia Day for myself and the wife for a total of $34. The ticket from Canberra to Melbourne is even cheaper at $8pp.

    • +2

If you do a return trip, it saves you that extra $1.99 service fee as that seems to charge per booking

  • +6

This is good to see in Australia!! Give rip off Greyhound some competition!! Hope this company comes up to Queensland.

  • +1

Finally murrays has actual competition on the canberra - sydney route! $50 one way is such a rort.

  • +6

    $17 RETURN - Melbourne to Sydney. Bargain…

    • +1

      Hard to beat

  • Cheers

  • +1

Thank you, booked Syd to Melb. I've been Greyhound Syd to Melb before and also the train, so I know I can cope with it.

  • +2

Oh wow this is awesome. I used these busses all over Europe and they were so cheap and actually not that uncomfortable.

  • +3

I set Melbourne as the starting point and chose Brussels from the destination list.

It said "No trips on: Fri, 7 Nov".

I suppose they sell out fast!

    • I suppose they sell out fast!

Lots of people just want to leave Australia now

  • I have bought OW tickets from Sydney International Airport to Canberra for myself and my wife.

The total cost for both of us was $17.99.

    • Have you already travelled? If so how is the experience

  • +1

While the prices are good, the schedule is not. Whether I go by Greyhound, rail, or Flixbus I have virtually the same timetable.

I'd like to travel in the daytime to Albury but they all depart about 0730. A midday service would be a nice alternative, especially when travelling from Newcastle to catch the bus.

  • +2

Murrays reduced to $10 from Canberra to Sydney to Canberra 😁

    • I saw this, but this is only on their "Hot Discount" tickets which have a worse cancellation policy than Flix, so I would still go with Flix personally.

  • I tried to buy these $10 Murrays tickets for a Canberra to Sydney trip.

Surprise, surprise, the $10 Murrays tickets are only available from 20 November ie the Flixbus start date.

  • I recently used Flix in Spain, France, Belgium and the UK. Excellent service with great pricing. I hope they do well in Australia .

  • If only the rip-off Sky Bus from the Melbourne Airport to Melbourne City would get on board with reasonable fares too. It was way cheaper to catch a bus from Melbourne to Yarram on a 3 hour journey than from Melbourne Airport to Melbourne City on a 25 minute trip. Something is wrong there.

  • How comfortable are their overnight buses? E.g. syd to melb.

    • -1

Pretty sure that a coach is going to be more cramped than a typical economy airline seat.

      • +3

Nope, that isn't my experience actually. Caught an overnight bus in WA from Broome to Exmouth and it was WAY comfier than any economy airline seat I've flown.
