Modem / Router for FTTP with VOIP

Hi.
Need to get a new router as current one kicked the bucket after ISP support told me to do a factory reset.

Only on fairly basic plan (FTTP) so don't need massive speed. Requirements are for one person use in a split level brick house, so decent wifi would be good. VOIP is a requirement.

JB only have the D-Link AX180 which is $279 and way too much imo - both in cost and for what I require.
Will need to have this within a day or two of posting.

Any help is appreciated!

Like it or not, VoIP is old school tech, not many new modem/router supports it, your best option would be to get an VoIP adapter.

Thanks for the response. Didn't know such things exited. Was there a specific recommended router I should get, and then any recommended adapter that would work together?

      • I used to use Cisco adapter, too hard to find them, but I have seen Unlocked Linksys PAP2T VoIP Phone Voice Adapter in AliExpress for $30, hopefully that do the trick.

They work with any, only need a ethernet connection.

        • Need something within a day or two so not looking good for that.

        • New ones of those are almost always counterfeit as those went end-of-life long ago. The more careful sellers usually omit stating its a Linksys/Cisco/Sipura otherwise they risk 'not as described claims". Another option for the OP is a dedicated VoIP phone. Telstra Technicolor Smart Modems bought second hand offer a lot of bang for buck once hacked to unlock their VoIP from Telstra and enable additional functionality.

      • Are you needing an "analog telephone adapter" ? So you can use a 20th century analog handset?
        e.g. https://www.amazon.com.au/Telephone-Adapter-Support-Protocol…

That one has 2 ports, so you can plug in your fax machine as well.

You could just install a SIP client on you mobile phone. Will do the same job.

That's a great idea, I have been conflating using my VoIP landline number with needing to use my old landline handset.

Why doesnt OP just ask thier ISP which one they recommend?

      • Why don't you learn how to spell 'their' properly. The correct spelling has been recommended to you on multiple occasions. FFS

      • I did. No specific answer from the two techs I asked (although the tech support was based in America).

  • VOIP has become almost niche now. Even VDSL modems for FTTN are limited. If you can bridge your voip enabled router to a new router it might be simpler in some ways unless it's completely bricked. You could see if you can pick up a 2nd hand VOIP device to connect to but new they are as much as a router.

    • Thanks. Unfortunately the home phone is a requirement. My current modem gets no internet light at all now so it is done with.
it is looking like the AX1800 is my best option so I can get my internet and phone back asap.
Looks like I can get it from Amazon for $229 with Monday delivery.

VoIP adapter: Grandstream HT801 $65 or Grandstream HT812 $79 @ Scorptec however this only works if you have the VoIP credentials. Some telco's don't give you the VoIP credentials.

Who are you using for the VoIP service?

How much do you want to spend on a router?

    • I am with Exetel, been with them for many many years.
Would have been fine spending $100-$150 on a router.

      • Ask Exetel for the ZTE H1600 router with built-in VoIP.

TP-Link Archer VX1800v router with built-in VoIP $203 @ Amazon AU is about as cheap as it gets brand new.

        • Do you have a link for the Archer. Cannot seem to find it.
There is the AX1800 but not with the 'v' at the end.

          • @ZEDG: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0CJCLWF8N

Have you got the Exetel VoIP credentials?

            • @Twix: Is it the same as this one?
              https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/tp-link-archer-ax1800-dua…
Has no mention of Voip even though model is the same?
JB support said the D-Link is the Voip only one they sell.

I have an old Exetel email with Voip information/details in it.

              • @ZEDG: JB has listed VoIP in the specs (FXS phone) and images.

                Ports: 1× Gigabit WAN/LAN + 3× Gigabit LAN + 1× USB 2.0 + 2× RJ11 (1× DSL + 1× FXS)
                MODEL: ARCHER-VX1800V

                • @Twix: The JB one I linked to has different ports on the back. It's not the same - even though the model number is? So confusing.
So you would recommend this over the D-link? (primarily cause it is bit cheaper?)

                  • @ZEDG: There is two different models.

                    1. TP-Link Archer VX1800 that you linked is a router and doesn't have VoIP.
                    2. TP-Link Archer VX1800v is a modem/router and has VoIP.

Maybe get a TP-Link Deco X55 2-pack if the home is long and the Grandstream VoIP adapter.

                    • @Twix: Thanks very much for your help and responses. Appreciated!
ARCHER-VX1800V is the one. Let's see how cheap I can get it locally today.

                      • @ZEDG: Bought it from Officeworks with 5% price beat so $193.54. Setup and all working - back to normal!
Wifi connection (bars) look either the same or worse.

      • Would be interested to know how you go. I've been with Exetel for years too. I've had VOIP the entire time, but I've never been able to get VOIP working except with a cable connected between the modem and "landline" phone handset. I do have the VOIP credentials, but never got it working on a SIP client on my phone. I tried lots of different clients, with lots of different settings, but no luck. I even had a case raised with Exetel, but they couldn't solve the issue either.

        • I use Voip with landline phone handsets as well.

  • If you have the VoIP details, install a SIP app on your mobile and then you can have access all the time. Then get a cheap Mesh set with a WAN port as your FTTP needs no configuration to work.

  • What router did you brick? Are you sure it's dead, dead? Sometimes with USB JTAG interface you can still get in at the bootloader and reflash the firmware. I had to do this with my Nighthawk r8000 in the past after I flashed it with aftermarket firmware. Once it was flashed, if I loaded too much into RAM (like a couple of VPN certificates) it would brick like it ran out of space and started overwriting the part of the flash memory that contained the image.

    • I have a feeling it could come back but as don't believe it is dead dead - the other lights are still on. But this seems all too time consuming and complicated for me. Nice suggestion, thanks.

  • Check FB marketplace? I can see a bunch of VoIP routers near me going for $20 to $30 (actually scrolling a bit further few free ones too)

Just re-reading your post. You say it happened after you factory reset the modem (what model do you have?), so maybe a silly question but have you set it up again afterwards?
Maybe your account is the older type that requires PPPoE log in details? Or the opposite and the defaults are not for IPoE.

(I seem to remember Exetel's own modem should provision once plugged in but might not be pulling the settings) Also can try power cycling your NTD.

    • If all the lights are on after a factory reset it might need all the internet and VoIP settings put back in. A new device won't help because the settings will also need to be put back in.

      • It was just the Internet light that was not on. So I couldn't access the console/settings.

        • Yeh that would indicate internet connection is made, but you should still be able to connect to it via the local IP which by default is 192.168.20.1 according to this

Run through that guide, just need to determine whether your account needs to be set up for PPPoE or IPoE and should get you back online as it seems the most likely reason.

Not sure what required the reset in the first place, but like I mentioned sometimes the problem starts at your NTD and the age old turning it off and on again is all it needs.

          • @bamzero: The local IP address would not work.

    • It was the Netcomm NF10WV.
Considered getting a used VX420-G2h (there was one close by via Marketplace, and another about 20min away brand new).
Just decided to upgrade, even though double the price. May improve Voip calls which could sometimes be problematic (not sure if it was the voip though).

  • FYI. My issue (which had happened 3 times previously) was when I turned on the Exetel speed boost in the morning after logging into WFH. Tech support said that the speed boost would cause the work laptop WiFi connection to then kill the internet - my Internet light would go red and stay red for hours. No way to get it back up.
If I set the Speed Boost to turn on at a set time (before work/login), which I set the night before, I didn't have the red light issue.

The first time I was with tech support (1st time it happened) we were on the call and after a little while or trying things it just came back on by itself.
This time I spend 1hour 15min with tech support to try and get it back, upon which a factory reset was suggested. Modem would then not connect. Second tech support the next day said the same thing - modem internals were done for.
