42" TV - Plasma or LCD - Full HD

I am just moving house and need a new TV.

It will be used for watching TV, DVDs and playing XBOX 360.

I am looking for a decent brand (no teacs etc) but at a good price. I am thinking Sony, Samsung, Pioneer or Panasonic but am open to other suggestions

Room will have a fair bit of natural light in it so that means I should go LCD???

If LCD, a 100hz model would be good….

  • 42" is probably not worth getting Full HD, probably 46-50 minimum.

As for natural light, just want to make sure you don't get one with too much of a reflective surface which can be either or. I think generally speaking LCDs do better in bright situations but plasmas will look better in darkened situations.

I can't recommend highly enough the Samsungs LCD/Plasmas, Series 5 & 6 LCDs are supposed to be nice (I have the Series 5 Plasma). I think they are up to series 9 now, which are great. Every once in a while they have promotions where they throw in free tvs, blu-ray players etc. Just got to time it out right.

A guy on the DTV forum organized a group buy a while ago, where they all managed to get cheap prices on the Samsungs. http://samsungseries6groupbuy.pbwiki.com/ See if he's gonna have another one soon.

  • Hi Neil - I had a look in Harvey Norman, Sydney CBD

They have Samsung series 6 and 7 LCD's (didnt look at plasmas) - I much prefer the look of the series 7 (the guy told me that technically there wasn't a lot of difference?)

They also had the Sony Z series. Sony's were around $100 cheaper ticketed prices.

I had a look at the group buy wiki - thank you - what i couldn't see is, how much did they actually end up paying??

    • They don't want it posted publicly but I can pass on the email to you if you want. The price was quite competitive.

      • Hi
Can you post me the price as well. Thanks.

        • You need to accept emails in your account profile settings.

  • Neil - an email would be good. Best prices for Sony 46" Z series and Samsung 7 series 46" LCD's is $3500 in the CBD (admittedly only been to 2 shops so hoping prices will come down from there)

Also worth mentioning the Samsung comes with a free Blu-Ray player which costs $30 by redemption (RRP $499, street price ~$350)

    • Hi mate, have you got a link to this promo? Sony will start giving out a Blue-Ray player from March 16th (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/10721) but I hadn't heard of Samsung doing the same unless the deal has already expired.

      • Bernie

Deal ended at the end of January.

I bought a Samsung 46" anyway in the end - last week

Paid $2605 delivered which was an OK deal. Love the TV

  • Ask about LED backlighting.
Improves the contrast ratio markedly as well as slashing the power consumption.

  • Ah also, this is a good resource for prices/pricematching.

  • Hi guys, my brother and I are in the market for a nice 40-42 inch LCD/ Plasma as well. Did some shopping around today and probably the best deal we found was $2100 on the Samsung series 6 LCD at the Good Guys. I hear the 7 and 8 series are pretty much the same but with internet features (I don't think I'd ever use this…). I'm curious as to the price the group buy got too Neil. If you see this post do you mind sending me the email?
    Thanks mate

  • From memory $2100 is pretty good - they should go a touch over $2000 for cash. Samsung series 6 is the sweetspot on price/performance in my opinion at the moment.

  • I have the opportunity to by a brand new Sharp 46" LC46D85X for $2300

    http://www.sharp.net.au/product-catalogue/products/LC46D85X/

Seems a good deal for a full hd, 100hz LCD TV.

Anybody have any experience with these - alternative is a Samsung series 6 which is more expensive….
