Sony, the pioneer of Blu-ray technology, is offering the first 20,000 customers who purchase any Full HD LCD TV in the BRAVIA range from the 16 March, a BDP-S550 Blu-ray player valued at $649, absolutely free.

The BRAVIA series’ included in the promotion include: XBR, Z, E, W, ZX and EX series. All models also feature Sony’s Motionflow technology.

A heads up now, just in case you were looking at buying a TV in the next week!

Unusual for a promotion like this is they're offering the mid-range player free, rather than their low-end player.

    I am surprised they are doing the 550 and not the 350, they must have a surplus of 550s because the 350 is the obvious choice for most customers.

    Also to note - Panasonic are still doing their Blu-ray promotion with the DMPBD35 til' the middle of April.

      I am not surprised, as 550 is definitely better than 350.
      350 does not decode dts-hd or dts-master audio. Even PS3 is a better blu ray player than the 350.
      550 is a very good player and this goes great with the Sony TVs.

      Of course, the flagship Sony player is the BDPS5000ES.

        My surprise comes because companies like to give out the cheapest stuff as a bonus, the 350 is still a 'Blu-ray' player, just an inferior one. Most consumers would be happy to know they are getting a free Blu-ray player at all, so it's an interesting take from Sony.

        Maybe designed to tackle Panasonic's promotion dead on, Panasonic has been killing Sony lately in nearly all categories..

      Sony has previously had free PS3s with some of their Bravias, but yes, Panasonic currently have a similar deal on with their Vieras.

    Have we got a link to the terms and conditions yet? I'm wondering if this deal also applies to the old XBR's or only the new XBR45's.
