  I not sure I get this. Is it free to play but you have to buy the game? I thought if you brought the game its always free to play (this aint a MMO)

  If its free to play and you dont need to buy the game - do I need to re-download it? or will my pirated errr backup copy work ok.

    It only free for 2 day.

    Depending on the game, what you can sometimes do is copy the installed files to the steam directly, re-verify the game and download the changed/missing data

    So in your steam list you can install it like you own it, but after the weekend is over Steam will lock you out of the game
