..lived next door to the bartletts.

had a 26 year old son that loved to do handstands.

      Upside down, upside down!

    • +6

pears are such underrated fruit, who the hell munches on pears during lunch and they're always last left in fruit baskets at work.

apples are soooo mainstream….. that makes pear hipster

  • +4

Definetly a win win situation for the farmer.

    • -1

ZRxs is right, we shouldn't buy these pears, someone isn't making money from these pears, it could be the farmer boycott these pears.

      *sarcasm *

      • Maybe the farmer has already been paid and Coles are losing money to get rid of them before they rot?

  • +4

Pitty its not online… For that price I would try my hand at fermenting my own alcoholic ciders!
    Good find!

    • +9

In this weather it would probably ferment on the way to your house.

  • +49

    Oh drat
I hopped onto this thread because the picture showed 6c a kilo.
Imagine my horror when I click open the thread and see they are actually 9c per kilo

    NO deal!

    • +1

That would then make them 8.55c/kg ;)
Take into account a FlyBuys value of 0.5%…
      Makes them 8.50725c/kg

      • +3

You're thinking about this waaay too much

  • +10

Pretty ripe by the look of them, but for 9c who's complaining. Dont forget to use ING paywave for extra savings lol

  • +2

do pears need to be soft to eat? how do you prepare them?

    • +4

I really hope you're joking, else that's very sad. Maybe stick to apples if you've already got the hang of those.

    • +4

to be fair, it depends on the variety of pear. These ones are best firmish, once they're soft they tend to be floury/mushy/yuk.

There's a reason these are 9c/kg - they're already too ripe, past their prime.

      • i prefer them up to a day or 2 before they hit that flowery stage

        but then ill eat anything

      • +1

That's true. Bought some last week from woolies and they were overripe. Anyway, made Caramelised Pears with Cinnamon, Cloves and Wine.

      • Juice them !

  • +1

    Poach pears!!

You with the bad jokes, quiet down over pear!!

        • +1

Ha, we'll just tell your mother that we ate it all.

        • That's an impeared sense of humour ;)

        • +1

I can't pear all these pearable puns. I'm peary upset.

        • neither, they're very apple-ing puns.

  • +4

Make sure you buy more than a kilo or they will rip you off 1c or more!!

    • +31

or buy 200g and it should round off to being free!

      • '1 Pear' Pear Transaction = 2c = Free

        • So if I want a pair I should ask for separate transactions?

  • They were 40c per kg at my local Coles. Still really cheap so I bought a bunch.

  • that picture looks pear-shaped

  • +2

'Pear for desert?' Indeed - good idea - they are very high in water content. Off to 'The Great Sandy…'

  • +1

    mmmm I love a nice pair :o)

  • +2

The one and only way to eat pears — poached in red wine. Ymmm.

  • Peel them and store them in the freezer for future use for smoothies and cakes.

  • Why in the heck would you even grows them to sell at this price….

    • +1

At this price they're basically paying you to take them away rather than them having to chuck them out. I don't think they grew them to sell them at this price, they've obviously just dropped the ball somewhere down the line and let them ripen to the point where they're about to go rotten

  • +1

70c per kilo @my local coles.

  • +1

    Would Wollies pricematch? lol

    • +2

I'd say that Woolies would be absolute "wollies" to price match this.

  • +2

If this qualifies for 200% back, fresh or refund, it would be nice.

I'm not sure about you guys but my local woolies would be throwing those pears in the bin. They have over-ripen.

    • Maybe they might not be great for eating right off the stand, but I'm sure they would be great for cooking in a ton of different recipes.

      • +1

and that ton (of these pears) would cost $91.44, and if it was a metric tonne, of course it would be an even $90.

(just trying to educate some of you!)

    • im not surprised they throw them in the bin the moment they get soft(and ready to eat)

yes im a employee of ww group

  • Price is great. For 9c how can anyone make money from this?

    • +3

Its just stupid. I purely see this as abuse of farmer/labour

      • +1

In the capitalist society that you and I live in, Coles can do whatever the fk it wants and there's nothing you can do about it :) In this case it means ultra-cheap pears. I'm not complaining. That's capitalism for you.

    • the farmer still sells it to coles at their normal price, its coles thats taking the loss because certain stores get allocated excess stock from the warehouse they get it from.. and rather than let them go to waste coles marks the price right down to get rid of it

  • +4

At 9c a kg, it works out about 2c per pear.

So if you buy them individually, they will round down and you'll get them for

    FREE

    • lol

    • -6

Nup. Any part of the first 5c is always rounded up to 5c, no matter how small the amount.

      • +6

        http://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/rounding-and-eftpos-tra…

Under the Guideline the following rounding principles apply to cash transactions:

        1 & 2 cents – rounded DOWN to the nearest 10
        3 & 4 cents – rounded UP to the nearest 5
        6 & 7 cents – rounded DOWN to the nearest 5
        8 & 9 cents – rounded UP to the nearest 10

you know someones an ozbargainer when…
"they bring up a small piece of legislation that probably would have taken hours pouring through useless documents."

Feel free to add your own "you know someones an ozbargainer when…"

        • +1

You know someone's an OzBargainer when…

They post information that pretty much everyone has known about for decades (rounding tips… wow, who knew?) without addressing the point at hand (when an entire transaction totals less than 5c).

        • +6

You know someone's an OzBargainer when…
for some inexplicable reason they find themselves aguing with jv

          :)

I feel Pear PEARsure for Pear Puns

      • Pear this with the Ainol puns and the puns will turn really pear shaped.

  • +1

At Carindale Coles yesterday; 26c/kg. I've been ripped off. At times like this, I feel sorry for the independent stores.

  • +3

I was just going to buy one, but at this price I might get a pear.

  • Man, I got ripped off. Pears were 49c/kg at Coles Fairfield QLD on Saturday!

    • +1

If you thought YOU got ripped off, try being the farmer that grew these. Coles probably screwed them over because they're 2mm smaller than the specified size or some such garbage.

      • +2

Complain if it's too expensive, complain if it's too cheap…sigh at people these days.

        • I want to be able to know that in 10 years time I'll still be able to buy fruit and veg grown in Australia WITHOUT chemicals that have been banned here for decades. If that's unreasonable, then you're right - there really is no pleasing some people .

I'm guessing you eat fish from China too, right?

      • +1

the farmer still sells it to coles at their normal price, its coles thats taking the loss because certain stores get allocated excess stock from the warehouse they get it from.. and rather than let them go to waste coles marks the price right down to get rid of it

        • Really? If that's the case Coles is far more reasonable toward the farmers than Woolworths

  • Charging 9C may be enough to pay for the carbon tax for journey from farm to the shelf.
