How much do they charge to alter the length of jeans these days?

Haven't had the need for alteration for a long time, but recently got a pair of jeans that is really long.

What's the usual going rate to shorten jeans these days? Do they re-use the original hem to make it look nice?

Cheers!

The place I go to is pretty cheap. I will put it up for everyone who lives close enough. I think it's about $7-8 a pair. Done on the spot.

    • Excellent price. Haven't paid that little in a couple of decades.

  • really, $7 in NSW? It costs $15 here in Adelaide! And that's only cut-and-sew, no fancy re-attaching the original hem or anything.

  • $18 here in Melbourne for jeans/t-shirts. Just ridiculous.

  • Just Jeans Castle Hill charge $15 for normal hem and $25 to use the original hem. Alteration shop in same shopping centre charges $18 for normal hem.

  • About $15 around Campbelltown NSW.

  • Damn! Jeans was on sale for $29 (from $135), thought it was a good deal, can't believe it will cost as much just to shorten it with original hem.

  • Number 2 here shows how to shorten the hem yourself. http://www.buzzfeed.com/alannaokun/20-easy-tricks-for-improv…

  • If you happen to travel to Asian countries, they cost really cheap (converted to AU$). I always alter mine when I'm going back to my home country. It's only $2-$3, sometimes less. :)

    • yeah just to go to those in shopping malls or large departmental stores. I had mine done in Malaysia but it was double charge due to it being a 'rushed job' (done in 2 hours; not sure if the seamstress was being legit or just ripping us tourists off), was about $4 for cut-and-sew but $8 for re-attaching the original hem. I did it anyway because $8 compared to a minimum of $15 here is a no-brainer.

      • Sounds like you got ripped off to me blablabla23. It should of only cost you half of what you actually paid. I reckon if you're in south east Asia and you suspect that you are getting ripped off then you probably are. Did you try to haggle?

        • damn. No, didn't really haggle as i didn't see the need to (probably need to turn in my ozbargain badge for saying that but i digress). The thing is i went to 2 alteration shops in the same mall and they both quoted double the 'standard charge' for express.

By the way the workmanship is not too bad but i've seen better.

  • About 10-12 bucks at Hunter Connection in Sydney CBD.

  • Where about at Hunter Connection? It's a bit of walk but not too far.

  • My mother does alterations. Located in Oakleigh South, VIC. Charges about $10 for jeans. Original hem is a bit more. Not sure how much but could find out if you are interested.

What the details of your mothers business in Oakleigh?

      • Please give her a call. 04 18688883. She is located 1 street away from the Clayton shops centre Rd and clayton Rd. =) unsure what prices she is charging now and when she's available.

She was national head trainer for Alterit / citywide clothing alterations. So she knows what she is doing but but semi retired.
