N4 because Samsung products are terrible and the N4 is stock Android.

Or consider the HTC One X.

S3 has a microSD card slot, removable battery, better camera, a physical home button + 2 capacitive buttons and USB OTG capability. And would be superseded in a few days with the S4 announcement.
Nexus 4 has stock Android and is very snappy but limited to 16GB max storage

I have the Nexus 4 and have been underwhelmed in some areas.

I think the notification light doesn't work the way I want it to. Needed to get Light Flow just to get it to work the way I expect it to (orange when charging, green when full). Found the notification light doesn't go off properly in some apps (or maybe it was slow pulsing that made it seem not to show).

The lack of a physical home button is annoying to me as I would have to hit the power button on the side of the device to turn it on (esp since the poor notification led not seeming to go off). If its we're the S3, just simply tap the home button with a single finger. Nexus 4 is a minimum 2 finger approach and would end up moving the phone if it is resting on a flat surface (e.g. your table). This and the notification light issue may sound trivial but they are everyday minor annoyances that bug me.

Lack of a microSD card may be a deal breaker for many.Lack of USB OTG for keyboards or USB drives is unfortunate. All of the Nexus 4 flaws (to me) are hardware that can't be fixed, while the S3 is mainly software which can be fixed. If you root the s3 and go custom ROM it would provide faster updates (still not as fast as Nexus) at the expense of good stability (eg wireless / tethering / Bluetooth may not work as well as stock).

At the price difference with microSD card slot and USB OTG, I would go for the S3

Capacitive and onscreen buttons > physical home button(especially on the S3/Note 2) imo.

For me it would be simple - if it's the 4G version of the S3 I'd get that, otherwise the Nexus.

i would choose the nexus because it runs stock android and it's not made out of plastic!

I have a S3, I think Samsung has done a good job differentiating itself from being just another Android phone. It has other features that you do not get with other Android phones. A lot of the features are gimmicks, I must admit and I have never used them. I only use the multi-screen and the low-light mode on the camera(which takes surprisingly good pictures under low light but you need to keep your hand really steady). I was also able to download Navigon for free because it is a Samsung phone. I know Google Maps is so much better, but Navigon doesn't need an internet connection to work and works like your regular Tomtom/Garmin/Navman.

Most flagship products from any company are able to differentiate themselves from other android phones.

Cheap phones with random gimmicks i can think of its like floating touch on the Xperia Sola.

I'd get nexus 4. Feels more premium and smoother(maybe because of better cpu and gpu). Latest android/faster updates. If you want a microsd or removable battery, S3 is the way to go.

You should have put a poll.

    • n4 has 2gb ram vs 1gb of the samsung unless its the 4g hes talking about..hence the snappieness

  • I have a Galaxy Nexus (same issues, no Micro SD, no physical home button) and I have envied the S2/S3 for these features. I use FLAC files for music and 16GB does not go very far with FLAC. I have bought Nexus Media Importer app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.homeysoft.…) to solve the OTG issue. Having stock Android is great though.

I think I would favour the S3 (4G) over the Nexus 4 (can't replace battery unlike my Galaxy Nexus + I have had some issues with LG phones in the past)

  • my wife has a S3 and I have a Nexus 4…Honestly speaking, both do pretty much what we want (for our needs)…but then again, it's a matter of personal preference/taste.

With the N4, you need to buy an adaptor (can't remember the name of the thing) to connect to HDMI and it is so difficult to buy..Amazon doesnt ship this adaptor to Australia…

And also, when you buy a screen protector for the N4, make sure you sute of the corner where the face sensor is (it's quite sensitive)…

    Thanks guys.

Nexus 4 just feels faster and smoother as i tried it out today. The storage is not an issue for me. S3 isn't 4g and the condition of the phone was not that good and no warranty either.

Ordered the Nexus 4, hopefully won't regret it.

Ordered the Nexus 4, hopefully won't regret it.

      You wont.

      • Agreed. You won't regret any smartphone purchase if you bought a phone to call and text. People expect too much out of phones these days…

        • Going to run apps, so speed was a big factor for me.

And yes, i did purchase it from play store.

Have just gone from apple to the nexus 4 very happy! Awesome phone! (After getting my replacement after poor reception-antenna issue)
    Sweet as now,very happy.

  • Too late now, but you could pay $399 on Play Store.

    • He/She did. $399 + $19 shipping via Play Store.

  • I must say, the S3 is more friendly to ios migrants.

  • N4 to me is best choice. The only thing I don't like is not being able to change battery easily. If I didn't have gnex I'd get the n4. I don't think being limited to 16gb is such a setback when you can use an adapter, unless you are pedantic.

  • The S3 has its set of capacitive buttons at the bottom edge of the phone. I find when I use it as a camera in landscape orientation, I am prone to touching the back button. The Nexus 4's capacitive buttons are further away from the bottom of the phone, so I think I'd be less likely to have that problem.
Anyway I have purchased the N4 and selling my S3.

My S3 also crashes/restarts fairly often. It may have something to do with the NAND Flash sudden death problem. Not sure.
