WTB - New or S/H PC in Bris?

I'm not entirely ignorant with computers, just not conversant - means I can work it out eventually.

I want something for my older neighbour who is using a 10yo (xGov I suspect) with max 2GB ram, USB2 and SLOW graphics - almost dead. She only browses/ethernet ADSL2, plays FarmVille - very slowly, loads few lo-res pix and wants to play movies from a USB/stick. Maybe also use Samsung TV as monitor (2.5m away) for more relaxed movie viewing. Doesn't need super speed for gaming or more than 500GB HDD. The monitor is newish and good enough.

Can anyone suggest or recommend a system build/er for the above. I'm in Vic Pt 4165, anyone local? Always pay PP (for guarantee) or cash for cheaper and proven to work with no warranty. Don't want to spend more than $300-ish, and no xGov please.

I saw the https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/97223 deal and it looks confusing and its RTB warranty is no good to me in Bris. Aldi's https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/97419 costs $500, much more, and she doesn't need 2TB HDD.

What do you think? Any suggestions welcome. PM is on. Thanks. M

  • The Aldi machine is not so much because of the 2TB drive, but mainly because it is a very good machine. Also note that the Vision Tech machine does NOT include Windows, which is typically $100.

I don't know of anywhere that you can get a new PC for that sort of money worth buying.

    Can do this:
    http://www.msy.com.au/SYSTEMS/INTELAMD-UpgradeValue.pdf

    Pick G1610
Option in Windows, 4GB Memory, Optical drive.
    Cost: 365.

Not say this is a GOOD option, but it is on the cheap side. If you want good go to Aldi.

    • Thanks for reply Bruce. No doubt you are right about new price and you are #2 who thinks Aldi offer is reasonable, plus they have that 60 day 'no questions' return policy and machine has 2yr warranty.

I wonder if RAM is upgradeable to 6 or 8 as I have found that to be a bottle neck in the past, anyone know about this machine?

      • Almost all desktops have upgradable RAM. Having said this, the returns on current software fall off dramatically after 4GB. I wouldn't get more than 4 without looking at other parts of the system first (but less that 4 is bad).

        • Thanks Bruce. I might just try it out.
