    Whats the deal with no game servers? If I was paying $279 a month for a dedicated server I would want to be able to use if for anything I want (within legalities).

      We currently do not permit the operation of gameservers on the network.

      There are a number of reasons behind this, to which we do not have to disclose all of them, however network security, integrity and various other reasons are included in this decision.

      We may review this in due time, but it is currently not an option available at this time.

    lols - dedicated my ASS - google VPS and tell me whats dedicated exactly? 1 core of a CPU and some ram? WTF?! THATS NOT DEDICATED HOSTING. "support" for centos gimme a break - psuedo-community support (sucking off fedora/redhat et al aint true support) backed up by some half wit sys admin, who gets overriding application control over my server? WTF?! doesnt justify you gouging the cost of your cheapass server… no offence mate, but VPS aint dedicated… kinda like all those shared links into the shared data centre… not going for FOTW or anything, but you're just reselling someone elses hosting service, aren't you?

      First of all, settle down there. Your reaction is highly uncalled for on more than one account.

      Do some research on server virtualisation and you will see that it is becoming quite a popular option within the hosting industry, with many benefits such as lower costs (licences, software etc), more effective performance abilities, easy migrations, upgrades etc and so much more.

      You suggest google VPS…I suggest you google server virtualisation ;)

      Effectively, this IS a dedicated server with 1 virtual layer…..a VDS. You are the ONLY virtual layer on the machine, so the machine IS DEDICATED to you and you only. No sharing involved.

      We manage, support and maintain all of our own services and simply utilise racks provided by someone else, which is hardly a crime in any case.

    I can't vote on the value of this deal because I don't really know the market rate for VPS hosting… however, I currently have hosting with Hightech from their last crazy 90% off offer. Originally I thought with $5/month hosting I'd get what I paid for, but I was dead wrong. Hightek have had really excellent email and phone support (even their java chat on their site works… virtually unheard of), and have been extremely helpful in everythign from changing MX records (which they do for me now on a near weekly basis) to installing SSL certificates. They even take time out to make recommendations in terms of what technology you should get. I've looked around for hosting, and let me tell you there are some REAL CLOWNS out there. Good support is a DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH. In any event, you don't have to take my word for it… just dig up the old thread right here on Ozbargain. The hightech hosting crew basically worked through the night setting up people's accounts and even kept the thread updated so everyone was appraised of what was going on… and I know damn sure that it wasn't worth $5 to go through that kind of trouble.

    you say virtualisation lowers licensing costs WTF ARE YOU SMOKING?! gimme some! - centos is fscking FREE along with all the GNU/OSS that you run on it and manage it with - cpanel/WHM licenses are a joke-if you cant admin ya box from a command line i seriously question your reasons for needing it. we do not need a pile more busted 0day sploited linux boxes on the net serving spam to the masses.

    as for "managing and supporting" your own services not being a crime, well no shit its not, but your statement that your offering DEDICATED servers is utter shite. don't hawk your wares to people who know better or you should really expect this kinda response.

      Power, cooling, rackspace and so many other factors go into server virtualisation.

      Do your damn research on why virtualisation is becoming so popular before getting on your soap box and preaching to the choir!

      Also, FYI:

      cPanel Licence for Full Dedicated Server: Approx $75-80 give or take provider
      cPanel Licence for Virtal Private Servers (includes VDS if you really want to get technical): $20-30 give or take provider

      RVSitebuilder costs are also lower for VPS/VDS

      LOWER LICENCING COSTS!!!

    So I get a "dedicated box" and bandwidth but you add a bunch of restrictions in the t&c http://www.hightekhosting.com.au/tos.php, one of which contradicts the game server restriction:

    "Users may not initiate the following: Run any gaming servers such as counter-strike, half-life, battlefield1492, etc unless otherwise specified within your hosting agreement with us - that is, unless you purchase a vps/dedicated server that we allow this to occur."

    Not a complete ripoff but not definitely not a bargain.

      This is NOT a gameserver supplied box, nor do we permit gameservers to be operated. Simple as that.

      Web/application/voip etc can all be operated and anything your unsure of, ask :)

      What your looking for is a product that is not in the market to which we offer….a simple fact of life. Not every provider is going to allow gameservers or offer them and that is their choice, not yours.

      Yes, you are missing something….a few things actually:

      1) Compare Intervolves offer of 80 GB to having 160GB from this server - Double the space
      2) That is a specified VPS offer where you would be effectively sharing server resources with other VPS's. This is a SINGLE VIRTUAL LAYER ON 1 SERVER….the only virtual layer and all server resources assigned to you and you only. An entire dual core CPU and the ram, disk etc. No fighting for resources, no bursting, zippo.
      3) No control Panel. We provide cPanel included in the price.
      4) No management. We include this in the price
      5) Minimum 12 month term. Ours: No Min Term
