If you fly to LAX with Virgin make sure you join Velocity Rewards. You will earn enough points for a $50 voucher from Myer/David Jones/Westfield/Kmart/Target. It's free to join.

I'm not the official Virgin rep for Ozbargain, just happen to work there.

    • So how does redemption of vouchers etc. compare to redemption of flights? I would have thought it may be more beneficial to redeem with Virgin flights if you plan on choosing them in the future.

Edit: hm, looks like I have 12.5k points in my account. :o And 120 "status credit" points, whatever those are.

Flights are slightly better value in general. A few examples; a $50 voucher is around 7000 points, one way flight SYD-BNE is 9500 for econ or 16400 for business, SYD-LAX is 59,400 for econ or 122,500 for business.

Looking at this the business class redemption flights are by far the best value. You can fly SYD-LAX return in business class for the price of apx. thirty five $50 vouchers ($1750).

I still redeem for vouchers myself just because I'm too impatient to save a lot of points and I can use the vouchers on stuff I would be buying anyway so it is practically the same as getting cash.

        • It also sounds more attractive/achievable to tell people they will get a $50 voucher for doing one trip than saying "just do this trip 35 times and you'll have enough points for a business class ticket".

        • Is this for 1 way or round trip?

        • The amounts I quoted above are all one way but 35 x 7000 = 245k which is enough for a return business class ticket SYD-LAX.

17 and 1/2 trips to the US for a business class trip, I dont think my bum would survive… LOL

Like you, I'd take the shopping vouchers instead… With ozbargain I can get more than the $100 worth…

          Thanks

      • I'm pretty sure flight redemptions also still require payment of flight taxes on top of the points. Makes the gift vouchers far more valuable.

        • With Virgin you can choose to include the taxes or not. The prices I quoted above don't require any payment of taxes. For example, you could choose to pay 6900 points + $17.39 taxes for a SYD-BNE flight.
