Any tricks to earn QFF Status Points without flying?

Hey OzBargainers,

I just got an email from QANTAS telling me that if I reach Silver status before the 30th of June they are willing to give me some nice, once-off, unique to me, benefits. I only need to earn 35 more status points to reach the target of 300. The only catch, it's impossible for me to fly anywhere between now and then with work and personal commitments. I thought about doing a quick overnight return flight to earn the points, but the cheapest flights I could find where I would earn the points is $500 (plus booking fees and credit card surcharges). As much as I want the benefits, I'm too cheap to pay the $500 and be on a plane for 10 hours to arrive back where I started.

So my question, any tricks to earn QFF status points while sitting at my desk?

Thanks guys :D

Only way to get status points is by flying. If you have points from purchases use those + cash on Qantas Any Seat Award, if its a double status award offer even better. If your in Syd or Mel try a run to TSV (Townsville), if not look at DRW (Darwin) good yield for less points. If you can get to Status Gold its another ball game. remember Classic awards bring no points only ASA.

  • Are the Silver benefits really that good that you would pay $500+ just to get a year of the benefits? The extras they are offering you must be something really special!

  • Silver no, gold yes, fast check in, free qantas lounges + 1 guest (save $500 PA) and affiliate lounges world wide, better choice for award flights, tons more baggage allowance, get some ASA points back etc.. If not flying say 4 / 6 sectors per year forget it.

  • Thanks guy,

I thought as much, was just trying to be a bit cheeky and see if fellow OzBargainers had found a loophole. Been a loyal Bronze member for quite a while and every year I get close to Silver but never able to achieve it. They offered bonus status credits above that of Silver bonuses for next year plus a qantas club membership for the next year and other perks. I normally get the email this time every year, but the benefits have never been this good. They know what I want, but I have no mean's to achieve it.

    • They are giving a years Qantas Club membership for Silver?! Normally they just give you a couple of silver Q-tags (luggage tags). I'm just about to lose Gold and they have offered me zip.

  • Pity then.

Do you know anyone who is flying in the time frame allowed? If they web check in, you could buy the ticket in your name.

I've been wracking my brain trying to work out how to get hubby's up to gold; wondering if I flew under his name, whether they'd notice. lol

You could do a trip to NZ and buy some products with GST rebate, get some money back, to offset costs, thats if it gives you enough status points

  • Given that there's a minimum of 10 for any flight, that's only 2 return flights. For the benefits they're offering you, I'd be finding a friend who had nothing to do and buying tickets for them to do the flying for you.

  • I thought linking it your Woolworths everyday card earns you points as well..

    • You earn Frequent Flyer points, not Status Points.

  • Op was it a QFF double points offer you received?.

Got one myself, be SG for another year from Oct once flights taken.

  • Some good prices here for maximum points. Just add $22 to the fares to make the flights eligible for frequent flyer points (and date change if need be)
