Nokia 808 Pureview

Hi guys!

Anyone have a Nokia 808 smartphone and /or what are you thoughts in regards to this phone? I hear the camera is very good. Do you guys know whether it's worth buying- it is the last symbian phone?

Cheers!!

I hear the camera is very good

Which is about the only saving grace about the phone. It fails in every other aspect as a phone — too bulky, outdated operating system, app ecosystem is limited, and dead in terms of future updates and support.
It can be best described as a camera with a phone attached.

remember this phone is supposed to be a tech-demo of sorts for future Nokia Lumia phones with PureView equipped, hence its the last high end Symbian Belle phone that Nokia is producing.

    • I want one! Mainly for the camera which reviewers have also said has the best audio when it comes to screening out background noise, wind etc. I want to keep my E7 until it wears out for e-mailing and taking notes with the physical slide out keyboard. It's honestly the best phone/computer out there IMHO. But I'd like to get an 808 for photography and recording outdoor videos where background noise may be an issue (see below)

But I am still researching which of the various on-line shops is most reputable. Because this phone has not been released in Australia one has to buy it as a parallell import. This means instead of Nokia's standard 2 year warranty you only get one year and it's through the importer not Nokia. So the importer's reputation is important.

For example, I had a terrible time with Dutyfreecentral which also trades as TopBuy whn I bought a Nokia E7. The camera part just died on me. They sent me a box and I returned it but then it was taking months for them to fix it. After nagging them, they finally sent me a new one but the keyboard had chinese characters on it. When I whinged they just ignored me. I eventually got an Australian stock E7 elsewhere and successfully loddged a dispute with my credit card company re Dutyfreecentral/topbuy but it was a GIANT waste of time and aggravation.

So in short, have you had good luck with any particular importers? According to Shopbot DWI has free shipping but I've never heard of them. Maybe it's worth paying extra at mobicity because they're better known?

Oh and my E7 now updated to Belle rocks! It's nice and fast. I don't know what everyone's whinging about. I think it's just a case of Apple fanbois making ignorant ststaments about Symbian. I use Android on my tablets, I like Android but I'm not sure I'd like it on a smaller screen.

Oh and one other thing. Although Nokia has said that the 808 will be its last high end Symbian phone it is still releasing new Symbian phones at the low and mid end of the market. Some of them are quite nice for a cheap phone. See for example: http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/9/4314844/nokia-asha-501-new-… and http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/120628-nokia-asha-210-offici…

I have this phone and have to say that, for the right people, it is the best phone available.
I also have a Blackberry Z10 and a lot of Android devices. I sold my Windows Phone. Generally I prefer Android devices, but the 808 is a real gem.

    Best features:
41MP camera (best you can get)
4 microphones (best you can get) for noise cancellation
Clear Black Display RGB AMOLED (makes up for its low resolution, which I don't find an issue).
FM Transmitter (best you can get).
    NFC (secure inbuilt).
Very fast and fluid OS (like iOS and Windows Phone). I wouldn't call the OS outdated as Android only recently caught up to it in features. I think that people who say this are thinking of the earlier S60v5 OS. Belle is very modern and functional.
    Very customisable OS (like Android).
USB OTG support (like Android) so you can plug in flash drives, keyboards, mice, audio devices, etc.

    Worst features:
Not as many apps as iOS/Android. It has about 150,000 apps. A lot of the good apps aren't found on the Nokia Store (you'll have to hunt in Google). Although, it may have every app you want — it has PDF readers, Skype, Whatsapp, Viber, selection of browsers, tonnes of games, irc, ssh, terminal, heaps of emulators, etc.. It certainly has way more apps than Windows Phone.
It doesn't have all the latest games but it does have, for example, a Playstation Portable emulator that works quite well.
Web browser isn't as fast as other phones. I recommend Opera or UC Browser.
