  • just be careful guys:

Stuhrling Original was founded by Max Stuhrling IV in 2002 in partnership with George J. von Burg. Stuhrling watches are assembled by von Burg-owned facilities in Switzerland and Hong Kong. Many of the Hong Kong assembled watches use Chinese mechanical movements supplied by PTS Resources. Although often promoting their somewhat nebulous Swiss heritage (Max Stuhrling's eponymous ancestor was a respected 18th century master watchmaker), Stuhrling Original are notable for being one of the first international brands to openly admit to using Chinese movements in their watches.

The first Chinese-powered Stuhrling watches used movements branded 'Lexus' to give the impression of exclusivity, although they appear to have been stock items probably from Hangzhou Watch Company. The quality of these was often poor and harmed the reputation of Stuhrling and Chinese watches more generally. Their more recent Chinese mechanical watches have been largely free of such quality issues.

In the October 2009 edition of Europastar, Yossi Gleiberman, CEO of Stuhrling stated:
"More than 50 per cent of our line is automatic, using movements from Seagull and Shanghai."

Representatives of Stuhrling, such as Larry Magens, have mentioned the 'finishing' of Chinese movements in the Hong Kong facility, which implies the assembly and improvement on an ebauche. However their claim to send 'rejected' movements back to the supplier subsequent to this finishing process suggests that in this context, 'finishing' amounts to no more than the regulating and checking of complete movements.

What do you want for $77.

Just pointing out its probably a Chinese watch. It doesn't seem to be sold at retail outlets and mainly marketed and sold using media marketing i.e. TV marketing and shopping websites such as NBC etc, also sold by overstock, dstore and seems to be a new line on Amazon with no real Amazon customer reviews (the reviews for this watch on Amazon are from other websites)

Other choices within a similar price range with good reviews are Casio G-Shock watches which are pretty good value on Amazon UK website for ~ $50 - $80 Delivered

    • Well, considering you can buy a Miyota OS20 movement for $10-$20 off the shelf, it's reasonable to expect quite a bit for $77. I don't think this is a terribly good deal, really. These aren't Swiss watches in the way that we would know them: they don't have beautifully crafted movements or complications. Granted, they don't cost as much as a 'real' Swiss watch, but if you're not going to buy a real Swiss watch anyway then you may as well spend less and get at least a reliable movement.

  • Invicta's sibling?

    • Invicta, Rotary, Akriboss….there's plenty of them. It is possible to get a genuine quality swiss watch with a reliable auto movement like an ETA 2824 or a Sellita for under $500. Brands like Hamilton, Mido, Deep Blue, Steinhart, Christopher Ward and there are probably others would all have some models in that range if you shop around. Nothing like the $70 for the original post above though, not for a swiss auto.

I did once buy a Seiko SX007 Auto diver for $99 direct from an authorised dealer with a full warranty. Japanese, not Swiss and not as nice a movement as the ETA but still a genuine auto watch that is highly respected and widely collected rather than a fashion piece of dross!

  • Not too sure about these cheap watches. I though you pay a higher price for a nice brand, like jewels. But if it's a cheap chinese piece of "not so great", why would you pay even $77?

    • Have a read of EC's links. They are not junk watches just maybe not worth the $495. Make sure you do your own research and don't take some one else's word for it.

  • References to the Seagull movements above aren't relevant given that these are Quartz watches. I assume they have the same chinese Quartz movement as all of the other 'fashion' watches.

Personally I wouldn't touch them but for $50 ish, probably a fair price. Why would you buy one? because you like diver's watches and you cant afford to move the decimal point a couple of slots to the right to buy a Rolex Sea Dweller or Submariner, a Blancpain 50 Fathoms or an Omega Planet Ocean (or any number of other high end diver's watches).

lol… i don't think many people on ozbargain can afford those Swiss watches that you listed.

      • I beg to differ. I reckon alot of people in ozbargain can afford and will buy the Swiss watches if there is a very good bargain… those who cant would probably sell a kidney to buy one if the discount is once in a life time good…afterall its all about getting a fabulous bargain:-)

If only some AD would post a deal here to sell me a rolex at 50% discount….

  • Hi there
I cannot buy this item it says doesn't post it Australia…any body any ideas.

    Thanks in advance

    • Only the watches with metal bands will ship to Australia.

  • For this kind of money I'd rather go with a Vostock Amphibia, a rugged watch with Soviet charm! lol

Alternatively you can get the Orient Ray for about $50 more which I'm sure would be well worth the extra.
