Hot Price or not?

IMO i would not consider this a hot price. With so many phones out on the market with similiar specs, designs etc, it's hard to justify spend this much on a smartphone. Although the specs are amazing, it's not worth $800+

I do hope the price is dropped a launch and people who pre-order get a refund on the difference.

How would you pay for this phone?

  • If it was $475 for the cheapest model on release date, I'd buy one.

  • Have been a huge fan of the GS range, but cannot fathom the idea behind GS4. Top of the world spec-wise, no questions. But why in the world do you need octa-core processor in a phone?

    • Marketing strategy. Think of it as just a quad. With another 4 weak ones to save battery.

      • Unfortunately doesn't have top of the world specs. The GPU is quite weak in comparison to everything else and the better model is the US (and Australia?) one with the Snapdragon 600. Lots of phones already have that chip.

And yeah the 'octa core' version is actually just a quad-core in the same way that Tegra 3 is a quad-core even though it has 5 physical cores.

        • the CPU is overclocked model, thus why it runs at 1.9GHz. I'd agree with Ichopstick and say it has the best specs in the market so far. Hardware, but not by much. From spec standpoint, it beats HTC One, Xperia Z and Iphone 5

And octa core is 2 sets of 4 cores. One prioritised for less intensive application and the other 4, vice versa. It can save battery to some extent and benchmarks have proven that

  • +2

$819 — that was even more than SGS3 when it first launched here? By the way I don't think Australians are getting the Octa-core. According to Ausdroid, we are getting the Quad core 1.9GHz Snapdragon version.

Still, the price is more than double the cheapest imported SGS3 16GB so far, for not that much gain.

    • It also depends on if you get the 4G version or the 3G version of it.

You can get the octa-core version in Australia from online retailers.

But yes, it's about double the price of the S3, because the S3 has dropped recently from the impending S4 release, and because for those who have to have the latest and greatest, it's worth it.

  • I've pretty much decided to get one of these new Androids with about 5" screen and Full HD resolution. But what is the general consensus, which one is the best at the moment? Or would it be best to wait a couple more months for more competion? This price for S4 seems just too expensive at the moment, when other pretty similar specced mobiles can be had for less (Sony Xperia Z for $624). Ideally I would like something like Note II with its stylus, but with the Full HD. Note III should be just around the corner, shouldn't it?
Also, is there some web site that would keep track of the mobile prices in Australia and would also have historical data? That's because I would like to get an understanding how much I could realistically expect the prices to drop in the next 6 months and calculate my 28 Degrees card's price guarantee in the equation.

    • The Sony Xperia Z is very popular at the moment, and can be had for even better prices than $624.

But the S4, when it's available, will have some pretty nifty (and novelty) features, and extra show-off value.

But, the Xperia Z has "stamina mode", which really helps conserve battery, which can be pretty handy.

  • this price is frekin ridiculous!! whos gona pay that much its even more than the iphone 5 at launch! guess ill just have to wait for better price, lol Samsung's actual RRP is 899 for 16gb hahahah so much for wanting to have it day one…
