Actually yeah, it seems it's not the DVDs that have failed. Could be to do with high speed burning of CDs back in the day.

All my archive DVDs from the early 2000s are no longer readable. Mostly don't care other than a few photo backups.

I wouldn't say it's landfill, it will still do what it's meant to. Just not a deal.
