The purpose of this page is to address frequently asked questions raised in the comments section of gift card deals on OzBargain, and it is split into a number of sections:

Coles sells two types of gift cards in-store:

• Gift cards issued by Coles Group Ltd, including:
  • Coles gift cards,
  • Coles Group & Myer gift cards, and
  • Officeworks gift cards.
• Third-party gift cards, including:
  • Coles Mastercard gift cards
  • JB Hi-Fi gift cards
  • The Card Network (TCN) gift cards, and
  • Ultimate gift cards.

If you are able to check the balance at this website, it is a gift card issued by Coles Group Ltd.

Coles Group Ltd sells their own gift cards and small number of third-party gift cards on a dedicated gift card website, but this website is always excluded from gift card offers.

If the deal is offering an upfront discount on gift cards, no.

If the deal is offering bonus Flybuys points on gift cards, yes.

You can sign up to a new Flybuys account through the Flybuys app or the Flybuys website.

You can also pick up a temporary card at a Coles supermarket and scan that to earn points in a transaction.

• You must register a temporary card within three months of the date it was first scanned, otherwise you will forfeit any points earned so far.
• You must register a temporary card in order to redeem any points.

At the time of writing this, there are no known sign-up bonus offers for new Flybuys accounts.

All purchases of gift cards issued by Coles Group Ltd will earn zero Flybuys points.

All purchases of third-party gift cards at Coles will earn 1 Flybuys point for every whole dollar you spend.

• NOTE: if you are a Coles Financial Services customer redeeming 2000 Flybuys points for a $10 discount on the transaction, the number of standard Flybuys points earned on the purchase of third-party gift cards will be calculated on the amount spent after taking the $10 discount into consideration. For example, if you purchase a $30 Ultimate Students gift card and redeem the $10 discount, the actual amount spent will be $20 and therefore 20 standard Flybuys points will be awarded to you for that transaction.

If the gift card deal is for bonus Flybuys points for each gift card purchased, the number of bonus points is usually specified in the deal’s terms and conditions.

• Most deals award a set number of points as a bonus (e.g. 1000 bonus Flybuys points if you purchase a TCN Kids gift card), and it will be awarded in addition to the standard points earn rate for third-party gift cards. These kinds of deals do not scale the number of bonus points for different denominations. For the example given before, you will earn 1000 bonus points if you purchase a $30 or $50 denomination TCN Kids gift card.

• Occasionally, a deal will specify the number of Flybuys points you will earn for each whole dollar you spend on gift cards (e.g. 20x Flybuys points on the purchase of Apple gift cards). This number already includes the standard points earn rate for third-party gift cards, so the offer is for 1x standard point and 29x bonus points per whole dollar spent.

All purchases of any gift cards at Coles will not count towards any other bonus points offers. For example, if your Flybuys account is targeted with a spend $120 in one transaction and earn 3000 bonus points and you spend $150 on gift cards, you will not earn 3000 bonus points from that offer.

The deal terms and conditions will also specify the maximum number of gift cards that will earn bonus points or the maximum number of points that will be awarded.

The “value” of Flybuys points is dependent on your redemption preferences. Using 2000 Flybuys points as an example, it is equivalent to:

• $10 in Flybuys Dollars (redeemable on most items at participating retailers), or
• 1000 Velocity Frequent Flyer points, or
• A $10 discount on a single transaction at Coles (only available to Coles Credit Card, Coles Insurance or Coles Personal Loan (i.e. Coles Financial Services) customers scanning the Flybuys card linked to their account).

Flybuys points can be manually converted into Flybuys Dollars in lots of 2000, and into Velocity Frequent Flyer points in lots of 1000.

Standard points earned from in-store transactions at Coles should be credited to a Flybuys account within 48 hours of the transaction being completed.

Bonus points should be credited within the same timeframe, unless otherwise stated in the terms and conditions of the bonus points offer.

In reality, Flybuys points earned on purchases of third-party gift cards are usually credited to your Flybuys account around 5pm Sydney/Melbourne time on the day after the transaction. However, there are some instances where Flybuys points will not be credited until two or three days after the transaction. This is not common, but can happen from time to time.

If you did not scan your Flybuys card during the transaction, go back to the store where the transaction took place within seven days with the receipt and your Flybuys card, and ask the service desk to add your Flybuys card to the transaction.

Even though there is a clause in the Flybuys terms and conditions that the Flybuys card must be presented at the time of purchase, OzBargainers have received standard and bonus points if they forgot to scan their Flybuys card at the time of purchase and asked the service desk on the same day to add their Flybuys card.

If you scanned a Flybuys card during the transaction, you cannot change the Flybuys account associated with the transaction after the transaction has been finalised.

If you did not scan a Flybuys card during the transaction and asked the service desk to add a Flybuys card to the transaction, you cannot ask the service desk later to change the Flybuys card associated with the transaction.

Coles/Flybuys seems to calculate a minimum spend requirement based on:

• the cumulative amount spent within the previous week, and
• the minimum spend requirements on previous offers.

Coles/Flybuys seems to include the amount spent on purchases of gift cards in the cumulative amount. Although the algorithm appeared to have changed in November 2021 to no longer take this into account, the algorithm appears to be once again including the amount spent on purchases of gift cards.

Yes, but only if you are a Coles Financial Services customer who is buying a third-party gift card.

If you are a Coles Financial Services customer with a Flybuys account linked to your Coles Financial Services product, you can instantly redeem 2000 points in-store at the checkout in exchange for a $10 discount on the purchase of third-party gift cards. You can only apply 1x $10 discount for each in-store transaction.

If you opt for this redemption method, you will not earn any standard Flybuys points on the $10 discounted in that transaction, as Flybuys treats the $10 discount as a discount rather than a payment method, and Flybuys points are calculated on the amount spent after all discounts. For example, if you purchase a $30 TCN Kids gift card and opt for the instant 2000 points redemption, you will only receive 20 standard Flybuys points, not 30.

Yes, you can redeem Flybuys points in the Flybuys Rewards Store for a range of physical gift cards, including:

• Coles
• Target
• Bunnings
• BCF
• A selected range of gift cards issued by TCN.

Gift cards available on the Flybuys Rewards Store are rarely discounted and rarely attract bonus points offers.

If you attempt to redeem Flybuys Dollars on any gift card purchases at Coles, it will be declined as soon as you swipe the card on the EFTPOS terminal, and the EFTPOS terminal screen will display an Invalid Product Mix error.

Coles has placed restrictions on the usage of the following types of gift cards:

• Coles Gift Mastercards (issued by Indue - no longer available for sale)
• Vanilla Visa gift cards
• Coles Mastercard gift cards (issued by Heritage Bank)

Swiping one of these when purchasing a gift card may trigger an Invalid Product Mix error on the EFTPOS terminal. Please refer to the table below for more information:

The answer depends on the type of gift card and checkout being used.

The terms of use for gift cards issued by Coles Group Ltd clearly state that they cannot be used for purchases of gift cards, so staff reserve the right to stop you from paying for a gift card with a gift card issued by Coles Group Ltd.

Gift cards issued by Coles Group Ltd cannot be used to purchase any gift cards issued by Coles Group Ltd (e.g. Coles gift card, Coles Group & Myer gift card, Officeworks gift card), as this is blocked at all checkouts. Attempting to do so will cause the EFTPOS terminal to display an Invalid Product Mix error.

The Coles Groceries Gift Card (aka Coles Groceries & Returns Gift Card) cannot be used for any gift card purchases at Coles (including third-party gift cards), as this is also blocked at all checkouts. Attempting to do so will cause the EFTPOS terminal to display an Invalid Product Mix error.

Some Coles self-service checkouts will also display an error message when attempting to pay for any gift card using gift cards issued by Coles Group Ltd. Self-service checkout staff cannot or will not help you get around this issue.

At serviced checkouts, it is at staff discretion whether to allow a customer to use gift cards issued by Coles Group Ltd (other than the Coles Groceries Gift Card) as a payment method for third-party gift cards.

It depends on the type of checkout you go to.

Coles’ self checkouts only allow split payments if a customer inserts cash first and then opts to pay the remaining balance on one EFT payment method (e.g. a debit/credit card). Staff cannot override this limitation.

Coles’ standard checkouts (i.e. the checkouts operated by a dedicated staff member who packs your groceries for you, or the service desk) are able to do split payments when purchasing gift cards, but this is at staff discretion.

Coles generally allows customers to purchase up to five gift cards in a single transaction, but:

• Some store managers or service supervisors may enforce a dollar limit or a lower gift card limit per transaction (or even per day).
• All purchases of gift cards at a self checkout require staff approval.
• Purchases of gift cards costing $1,000 or more requires additional approval from a supervisor or duty/store manager.
• Purchasing three or more gift cards may prompt staff to warn you of gift card scams, as well as give you a small flyer with information on gift card scams.

If you scan a staff card on a transaction where you’re purchasing a gift card, Coles’ POS system will automatically remove the staff card.

Generally, no.

After payment is finalised, the checkout will contact a gift card activation server to automatically activate your gift cards. The EFTPOS terminal will display a message as to whether gift card activation was successful for each gift card purchased in the transaction.

The purchase receipt will also contain gift card activation details between the GST information and the Flybuys card information (for cash-only transactions) or between the GST information and the details for the card(s) used for payment (for transactions paid in full or in part with cards or gift cards).

If gift card activation was unsuccessful, take the purchase receipt and the gift cards to the service desk and staff can sort out the issue.

Please note that the balance on the gift card may not be available for up to 48 hours.

All purchases of third-party gift cards will earn 4c off per litre (or 8 bonus points per litre) fuel vouchers that can be used at Shell Coles Express fuel stations.

All purchases of gift cards issued by Coles Group Ltd will not earn fuel vouchers.

For the purposes of this section, Woolworths includes Woolworths Supermarkets and Woolworths Metro, but excludes Ampol Woolworths Metro.

Woolworths and BIG W sell two types of gift cards in-store:

You can sign up to a new Everyday account through the Everyday Rewards website. You will be provided your new Everyday Rewards number (as well as a picture of the barcode) as soon as you have finished the sign-up process.

You can also pick up a temporary card at a Woolworths supermarket or a Woolworths Metro store and scan that to earn points in a transaction.

• The temporary card must be registered within six months from the date it was first scanned, otherwise you will forfeit any points on the temporary card.
• You must register a temporary card in order to redeem any points.

If you follow this link, you can earn 1500 bonus points as a sign-up bonus for creating a new account or registering a temporary card. The 1500 bonus points may take up to 30 business days to be credited to your account.

All purchases of any gift cards at Woolworths and BIG W will earn zero standard points.

If the gift card deal is for bonus Everyday Rewards points for each gift card purchased, the number of bonus points is usually specified in the deal’s terms and conditions.

• Some deals award a set number of points as a bonus (e.g. 1000 Everyday Rewards points if you purchase a $50 Ultimate Kids Gift Card). These kinds of bonus points deals at Woolworths usually scale for different denominations of the gift cards in the deal. For the example given before, you will only earn 600 bonus points if you purchase the $30 denomination of Ultimate Kids Gift Cards.

• Other deals will specify the number of Everyday Rewards points you will earn for each whole dollar you spend on gift cards (e.g. 20x Everyday Rewards points on the purchase of Ultimate Kids Gift Cards).

If you are purchasing a gift card through a bonus points deal that also charges a gift card purchase fee (e.g. OnlyONE Prepaid Visa gift card, The Perfect EFTPOS gift card), you will not earn any bonus points on the gift card purchase fee.

All purchases of any gift cards at Woolworths or BIG W will not count towards any other bonus points offers (e.g. Everyday Rewards points boosters). For example, if your Everyday Rewards account is targeted with a spend $120 in one transaction and earn 3000 bonus points and you spend $150 on gift cards, you will not earn 3000 bonus points from that offer.

Gift card deals at Woolworths typically do not have a limit for the number of gift cards that will earn bonus points nor a limit for the maximum number of points that will be awarded (unless otherwise stated in the deal terms and conditions).

Gift card deals at BIG W typically have a limit for the number of gift cards that will earn bonus points or a limit for the maximum number of points that will be awarded (unless otherwise stated in the deal terms and conditions).

The “value” of Everyday Rewards points is dependent on your redemption preferences. Using 2000 Everyday Rewards points as an example, it is equivalent to:

• $10 in Everyday Reward Dollars (which is redeemable at participating retailers), or
• 1000 Qantas points.

Everyday Rewards points are automatically converted into Everyday Rewards Dollars or Qantas points in lots of 2000.

After you scan the gift card(s) and the Everyday Rewards account and proceed to the payment screen, the checkout may take a couple of seconds before displaying the number of points that can be earned in the transaction towards the top right-hand corner of the self-service checkout screen.

However, at Woolworths, this portion of the checkout screen will not always display the number of points that can be earned, as it is sometimes used to instead display the number of bonus items you will earn for any collectables promotions (e.g. Discovery Garden, Woolworths Bricks).

There are also some occasions where the bonus points are not allocated to an Everyday Rewards account until a later time or date, as it can sometimes take up to 14 business days for bonus points to be credited to an account.

Bonus Everyday Rewards points earned on gift card purchases are usually credited to an Everyday Rewards account immediately after payment has been finalised.

However, it sometimes may take up to 14 business days for the points to be credited, and in exceptional circumstances, points will not be credited within 14 business days and the account holder will need to follow this up with Everyday Rewards.

If you did not scan your Everyday Rewards card during the transaction, you will need to contact the Everyday Rewards team for assistance.

Please note that they will only retroactively award bonus points at their discretion, so there is a chance that the Everyday Rewards team will reject your points claim.

If you scanned an Everyday Rewards card during the transaction, you cannot change the Everyday Rewards account associated with the transaction after the transaction has been finalised.

If you did not scan an Everyday Rewards card during the transaction and previously raised a points claim with the Everyday Rewards team, you cannot ask the Everyday Rewards team later to change the Everyday Rewards card associated with the transaction.

Woolworths and BIG W have placed restrictions on the usage of the following types of gift cards:

• Activ Visa prepaid gift cards
• OnlyONE Visa prepaid gift cards
• All EFTPOS gift cards with card numbers starting with 502125 or 638947 (e.g. Perfect EFTPOS gift cards)

Swiping one of these when purchasing a gift card may trigger a Cancelled - Items Not Allowed error on the EFTPOS terminal. Please refer to the table below for more information:

Everyday Pay currently cannot be used to purchase gift cards. Attempting to purchase a gift card via Everyday Pay will return an Items Not Allowed error, and the POS system will take you back to the regular payment screen.

If you select Gift Card as a payment method at a self-service checkout and then you scan, swipe or enter a gift card, an Item Not Allowed error message will pop up on the EFTPOS terminal. A staff member will need to clear the error message before you can attempt to use another payment method.

If you go to a standard checkout and ask to pay using a Gift Card, you'll either be told “no” by the checkout operator, or the checkout operator will let you try and you'll get the same error message as the one you get at self-service checkouts.

If you try to use Everyday Pay as a payment method for purchasing any gift cards at Woolworths or BIG W, you will get an Item Not Allowed error and you should be sent back to the regular payment screen. This is because Everyday Pay cannot be used to purchase any gift cards under any circumstances, even if there are no gift cards issued by Woolworths Group (e.g. Woolworths, WISH) added to the Everyday Pay wallet.

Woolworths' self-service checkouts and standard checkouts (i.e. the checkouts with a dedicated staff member who packs your groceries for you, or the service desk) are able to do split payments when purchasing gift cards.

Using the 10% discount on the purchase of gift cards will see that discount redeemed for the month, but no discount applied to the gift cards.

There is no specific limit, as it will depend on a number of factors.

• Self-service checkouts and standard checkouts will not let you purchase more than ten gift cards per transaction.
• All purchases of gift cards at a self-service checkout requires staff approval.
• A regular staff member operating either standard or self-service checkouts have a dollar limit assigned to them (e.g. less than $500, $1000, $2000) for the maximum spend on gift cards they can approve in one transaction.
• Duty managers and store managers generally do not have dollar limits assigned to them, but some may enforce an arbitrary dollar limit or a gift card limit per transaction (or even per day) and direct regular staff to enforce such a limit. For example, customers may be limited to $500 worth of gift cards per person per day, or only allowed to purchase 2x gift cards per person per day.

Team members used to get a 5% discount on the purchase price of nearly all gift cards sold at Woolworths, but this ended around late 2021.

Generally, no.

After payment is finalised, the checkout will automatically contact a gift card activation server to activate your gift cards. The checkout will print out a small receipt with information on whether the activation was successful.

At Woolworths, the checkout should only take a few seconds to approve a gift card purchase and initiate the activation process. However, at BIG W, this may take up to a minute.

If gift card approval was unsuccessful, the checkout will display an error message alerting staff to the failed gift card approval. If this happens, take the purchase receipt (if printed), the failed approval receipt and the gift card to the service desk and staff can sort out the issue.

Please note that the balance on the gift card may not be available for up to 48 hours or until the next business day (whichever is longer). Although the general guidance is that it may take 48 hours, Westfield EFTPOS gift cards may not be activated until the next business day (which can be longer than 48 hours).

Generally, no.

However, any gift card purchase fees associated with gift cards (e.g. Activ Visa gift cards, Westfield EFTPOS gift cards, Perfect EFTPOS gift cards) will count.

All purchases of third-party gift cards at Woolworths will earn 4c off per litre (or 6c off per litre in Tasmania) fuel vouchers if no Everyday Rewards card was scanned during the transaction. The paper fuel voucher printed at the bottom of the receipt can be redeemed at EG Ampol and participating Ampol fuel stations.

If an Everyday Rewards card was scanned during the purchase of third-party gift cards at Woolworths, a fuel voucher will not be credited to the Everyday Rewards account.

All purchases of Woolworths Group and Partner gift cards at Woolworths will not earn fuel vouchers.

You cannot earn fuel vouchers at BIG W.

Ultimate gift cards are prepaid EFTPOS or Visa gift cards that can be redeemed at a defined list of participating retailers.

Ultimate gift cards are issued by Blackhawk Network, and exist in both digital and physical forms.

Celebration gift cards are prepaid Visa gift cards that can be redeemed at a defined list of participating retailers.

Celebration gift cards are issued by Blackhawk Network, and exist in a physical form. Celebration gift cards are specially-branded Ultimate gift cards that are exclusively sold at Coles.

Celebration gift cards are not to be confused with Swap Celebration gift cards, which are a gift card also issued by Blackhawk Network and can only be exchanged for digital gift cards from a list of participating retailers.

There are two different versions of Ultimate gift cards:

• EFTPOS - Ultimate gift cards were originally launched as EFTPOS gift cards. Although some retailers are still selling these EFTPOS versions, it is being phased out.
• Visa - Physical Ultimate gift cards sold at retailers these days are almost always Visa gift cards.

The differences between the EFTPOS and Visa versions in terms of product functionality include:

It depends on whether the Ultimate gift card website states that the Ultimate (Visa) gift card you have can be redeemed at that participating retailer.

Ultimate (Visa) gift cards' terms and conditions makes it very clear that the full and updated list of participating retailers for each type of Ultimate (Visa) gift card is on the Ultimate gift card website. This was also confirmed by a Blackhawk Network representative.

The gift card packaging should not be used in nearly all circumstances when trying to understand where an Ultimate gift card can be redeemed, because the participating retailers printed on the gift card packaging is usually out of date by the time the gift cards arrive at a retailer. Participating retailers are typically added to (and less frequently, removed from) at least one type of Ultimate (Visa) gift card every few weeks, but physical Ultimate gift cards are only printed in batches (e.g. May 2021, September/October 2021, Feburary 2022, June/July 2022) and take a number of months before they arrive at a retailer for sale. The Ultimate gift card scheme underwent a major update at the end of September 2022, but only the batch produced across June and July 2022 reflects the changes instituted through this major update.

The gift card packaging should only be used to understand whether an Ultimate gift card is accepted at rebel, BCF or Supercheap Auto. Those retailers are being phased out of the Ultimate gift card scheme, so only physical Ultimate gift cards with those logos on the packaging will continue to work at those retailers.

A participating retailer may offer three redemption options for using an Ultimate (Visa) gift card:

• In-store
• Online
• Exchange

If a participating retailer offers in-store redemption, an Ultimate gift card can be redeemed either by:

• Swiping the physical Ultimate gift card on the EFTPOS terminal (physical gift cards only), or
• Adding the Ultimate gift card to an eligible mobile wallet (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay) and then using the gift card stored in the mobile wallet as the payment method in-store.

To redeem an Ultimate gift card in-store, tell the staff member at the checkout you would like to use a card. Do not mention anything about gift cards, as a participating retailer's checkout system may not be able to redeem Ultimate gift cards if the checkout is expecting a gift card issued by the store itself. For example, if you ask a staff member at a JB Hi-Fi checkout you would like to use a gift card and you attempt to use an Ultimate gift card, the checkout will be unable to redeem the Ultimate gift card, as the checkout is expecting the staff member to scan the barcode a JB Hi-Fi gift card.

A participating retailer may permit to a customer to redeem multiple Ultimate gift cards in one transaction. However, this is at the discretion of the individual participating retailer, as some participating retailers may not be set up to allow the redemption of multiple Visa cards in one transaction. Examples of participating retailers that will permit multiple Ultimate gift cards to be redeemed in one transaction include JB Hi-Fi and The Good Guys.

A participating retailer may also place restrictions on the usage of an Ultimate gift card. For example, JB Hi-Fi and The Good Guys officially do not permit customers to use Ultimate gift cards as a payment method for JB Hi-Fi gift cards or The Good Guys gift cards (respectively). However, it is up to staff to enforce this policy, as there is nothing in the JB Hi-Fi checkout system that would automatically block anyone from using Ultimate gift cards to purchase JB Hi-Fi gift cards.

If a participating retailer offers online redemption, the physical gift card can be redeemed either by:

• Entering the gift card's details directly into the credit/debit card section of the participating retailer's online checkout, or
• Adding the gift card to an eligible mobile wallet (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay) and then using the gift card stored in the mobile wallet as the payment method online (where permitted).

The expiry date used to pay for online purchases will depend on the type of Ultimate gift card being used:

• Physical Ultimate gift cards: 12/2029.
• Ultimate eGift Cards: the expiry date can be found by checking the expiration date on the website where you check the balance of an Ultimate gift card. It is typically three years from the date the gift card was issued.

A participating retailer will only permit to a customer to redeem one Ultimate gift card in one transaction.

If a customer is looking to redeem more than one Ultimate gift card in one online transaction, a potential workaround is to convert excess Ultimate gift cards into store-specific gift cards (e.g. Ultimate Home gift cards into JB Hi-Fi gift cards). Some things to consider:

• Some participating retailers (e.g. JB Hi-Fi) allow an unlimited number of store-specific gift cards to be redeemed in one online transaction in conjunction with one Ultimate gift card.
• Some participating retailers (e.g. The Good Guys, T2) limit the number of store-specific gift cards that can redeemed in one transaction in conjunction with one Ultimate gift card. For example, The Good Guys only permits a maximum of two The Good Guys gift cards to be redeemed in one online transaction, and T2 only permits a maximum of one T2 gift card to be redeemed in one online transaction.
• Some participating retailers (e.g. Officeworks) will not permit any store-specific gift cards to be redeemed in any online transactions.

A participating retailer may also place restrictions on the usage of a physical gift card on their online store. For example, JB Hi-Fi officially do not permit customers to use Ultimate gift cards as a payment method for JB Hi-Fi gift cards purchased through their online store. JB Hi-Fi sometimes cancels such orders (paid for either by adding the gift card's details into the credit/debit card field, or via Apple Pay), but will fulfill other such orders. There is no 100% reliable method for using an Ultimate gift card to purchase a JB Hi-Fi gift card through the JB Hi-Fi website.

If a participating retailer sells store-specific gift cards through a third-party website (e.g. The Good Guys) instead of their own website, an Ultimate gift card cannot be used to purchase a store-specific gift card through a participating retailer's online store.

The Ultimate gift card scheme also features a gift card exchange portal, where you can exchange part or all of the available balance of an Ultimate gift card for a participating retailer's gift card. However, not all participating retailers participate in the portal.

The link to the gift card exchange portal can be found on the Ultimate gift card website.

An Ultimate (EFTPOS) gift card can only be redeemed in-store at a particpating retailer. It is not possible to redeem an Ultimate (EFTPOS) gift card online or exchange it for a participating retailer's gift card.

An Ultimate gift card can be redeemed by swiping the physical Ultimate gift card on the EFTPOS terminal.

For example, JB Hi-Fi and The Good Guys officially do not permit customers to use Ultimate gift cards as a payment method for JB Hi-Fi gift cards or The Good Guys gift cards (respectively). However, it is up to staff to enforce this policy, as there is nothing in the JB Hi-Fi checkout system that would automatically block anyone from using Ultimate gift cards to purchase JB Hi-Fi gift cards.

Instore

JB Hi-Fi’s point-of-sale system will allow multiple Ultimate gift cards to be redeemed in one instore transaction, and there is no known limit built into the system. The OzBargain record is currently 81.

However, redeeming multiple Ultimate gift cards in a transaction will only be allowed at the discretion of the staff member operating the checkout. Although JB Hi-Fi staff usually permit multiple cards to be used in most transactions, staff may choose to not allow the redemption of multiple Ultimate gift cards if a gift card (e.g. JB Hi-Fi gift card, Apple gift card, Google Play gift card) is being purchased in the transaction.

Online - Ultimate (Visa) gift cards

JB Hi-Fi’s website will only allow the redemption of one Ultimate (Visa) gift card per online transaction, as JB Hi-Fi’s website cannot handle split payments across multiple Visa cards.

The workaround is to use an Ultimate gift card to purchase a JB Hi-Fi gift card directly from JB Hi-Fi. There is no limit to the number of JB Hi-Fi gift cards that can be redeemed in one online transaction. There are three ways to attempt this:

• Purchase a JB Hi-Fi gift card on the JB Hi-Fi website and entering the Ultimate gift card’s details (16-digit card number, expiry date, CVV2) into the credit/debit card section of the online checkout.

• Add the Ultimate gift card to Apple Pay, then access the JB Hi-Fi website on an Apple device to purchase a JB Hi-Fi gift card and use Apple Pay at the online checkout.

• Go to a physical JB Hi-Fi store and purchase a JB Hi-Fi gift card using the Ultimate gift card as a payment method.

There are two main issues this approach:

1. JB Hi-Fi’s website may cancel orders for JB Hi-Fi gift cards paid using an Ultimate gift card, due to an Ultimate gift card being classified as a prepaid Visa gift card, which means it does not feature the security features usually found on a debit or credit card (e.g. 3-D Secure).
2. JB Hi-Fi staff at a physical JB Hi-Fi store may stop you from purchasing a JB Hi-Fi gift card using an Ultimate gift card if they realise that an Ultimate gift card is being used as a payment method.

Online - Ultimate (EFTPOS) gift cards

Ultimate (EFTPOS) gift cards cannot be redeemed on the JB Hi-Fi website, as the EFTPOS network cannot handle online transactions.

The workaround is to go to a physical JB Hi-Fi store and purchase a JB Hi-Fi gift card using the Ultimate gift card as a payment method. There is no limit to the number of JB Hi-Fi gift cards that can be redeemed in one online transaction. However, JB Hi-Fi staff at a physical JB Hi-Fi store may stop you from purchasing a JB Hi-Fi gift card using an Ultimate gift card if they realise that an Ultimate gift card is being used as a payment method.

NOTE: this answer does not cover The Good Guys Commercial.

Instore

The Good Guys’ point-of-sale system will allow multiple Ultimate gift cards to be redeemed in one instore transaction, and there is no known limit built into the system. The OzBargain record is currently 54.

However, redeeming multiple Ultimate gift cards in a transaction will only be allowed at the discretion of the staff member operating the checkout. Although The Good Guys staff usually permit multiple cards to be used in most transactions, staff may choose to not allow the redemption of multiple Ultimate gift cards if a gift card (e.g. The Good Guys gift card) is being purchased in the transaction.

Online - Ultimate (Visa) gift cards

The Good Guys’ website will only allow the redemption of one Ultimate gift card per online transaction, as The Good Guys’ website cannot handle split payments across multiple Visa cards.

The workaround is to use an Ultimate gift card to purchase a The Good Guys gift card directly from a The Good Guys physical store. It is not possible to use an Ultimate gift card to purchase a The Good Guys gift card online, as The Good Guys sells The Good Guys gift cards online via a third-party seller (True Rewards).

However, a maximum of two The Good Guys gift cards can be redeemed in one online transaction (and this can be in conjunction with one Ultimate gift card).

Online - Ultimate (EFTPOS) gift cards

These Ultimate gift cards cannot be redeemed on the The Good Guys’ website, as the EFTPOS network cannot handle online transactions.

The workaround is to go to a physical The Good Guys store and purchase a The Good Guys gift card using the Ultimate gift card as a payment method. However, a maximum of two The Good Guys gift cards can be redeemed in one online transaction (and this can be in conjunction with one Ultimate gift card).

Instore

Officeworks’ point-of-sale system will allow multiple Ultimate or Celebration gift cards to be redeemed in one instore transaction, and there is no known limit built into the system. The OzBargain record is currently 20.

However, redeeming multiple Ultimate or Celebration gift cards in a transaction will only be allowed at the discretion of the staff member operating the checkout. Although Officeworks staff usually permit multiple cards to be used in most transactions, staff may refuse the redemption of multiple Ultimate or Celebration gift cards for any reason whatsoever.

Additionally, it is against Officeworks' store policy to use Ultimate or Celebration gift cards to purchase any gift cards in their stores, but it is generally up to staff to enforce this policy.

Online

Officeworks’ website will only allow the redemption of one Ultimate or Celebration gift card per online transaction, as Officeworks’ website cannot handle split payments across multiple Visa cards. Having said that, there have been a number of recent reports (as at Feb 2023) where Officeworks' website has refused to process an Ultimate or Celebration gift card as a payment method.

There is currently no workaround available for online transactions. Although the workaround for some other participating retailers (e.g. JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys) is to convert Ultimate gift cards into merchant-specific gift cards and then redeem merchant-specific gift cards on the online store, this is not possible at Officeworks, as Officeworks gift cards (and Coles Group & Myer gift cards) cannot currently be redeemed on the Officeworks website.

Additionally, it is against Officeworks' store policy to use Ultimate or Celebration gift cards to purchase any gift cards in their stores, so it is likely any attempts to use Ultimate or Celebration gift cards will fail.

Instore

It depends on whether the participating retailer has placed any limits on the number of cards from a financial institution (e.g. EFTPOS, Visa, Mastercard) can be used in one transaction.

Online - Ultimate (Visa) gift card or Celebration gift card

Only one Ultimate gift card can be redeemed in one online transaction.

Ultimate (Visa) gift cards and Celebration gift cards operate on the Visa network, and participating retailers that accept these gift cards on their online stores can only accept one Ultimate (Visa) gift card or Celebration gift card in one online transaction. These gift cards can be redeemed online either through a mobile wallet (if it accepted online by the participating retailer) or by directly entering the card details in the debit/credit card section of the online checkout.

To get around this issue, you may be able to convert your Ultimate (Visa) or Celebration gift card into a retailer-specific gift card (where possible) through:

• The Ultimate gift card exchange facility or Celebration gift card exchange facility.
• Purchasing a gift card through the participating retailer’s website - this only works for websites that sell their gift card on their own website and allow Ultimate or Celebration gift cards to be used as a payment method for purchases of gift cards. Some retailers sell their gift cards through a third-party retailer, which makes this route impossible.
• Visiting a physical store of a participating retailer and purchasing a gift card in-person.

Some participating retailers officially do not allow you to use Ultimate (or TCN) gift cards to purchase their own gift cards (whether in-store or online). However, it is almost always up to staff (in a physical store) or online systems to enforce this restriction, and previous experience from OzBargain users indicates that this is not always enforced.

Please also note that some participating retailers place restrictions on how you use their own gift cards. For example:

• The Good Guys Commercial currently does not allow any The Good Guys gift cards to be redeemed on the The Good Guys Commercial online store.
• T2 currently only allows a maximum of one T2 gift card to be redeemed in one online transaction.
• 99 Bikes currently does not allow any 99 Bikes gift cards to be redeemed on their online store.
• New Balance does not sell New Balance gift cards in Australia.

Online - Ultimate (EFTPOS) gift card

Ultimate (EFTPOS) gift cards cannot be used as a payment method for any online transactions at participating retailers, as EFTPOS cannot currently handle online transactions.

Blackhawk Network (the gift card issuer) does not offer a gift card exchange facility or a method for exchanging a physical EFTPOS gift card with a digital Visa/Mastercard/EFTPOS gift card that can be added to a mobile wallet.

To get around this issue, you may be able to convert your Ultimate (EFTPOS) gift card into a retailer-specific gift card. Please refer to the sub-section above on Ultimate (Visa) and Celebration gift cards for more information.

TCN gift cards are prepaid EFTPOS or Mastercard gift cards that can be redeemed at a defined list of participating retailers.

TCN gift cards are issued by Vii on behalf of The Card Network (TCN), and exist in both digital (Mastercard) and physical (EFTPOS) forms.

There are two different versions of TCN gift cards:

• Merchant-restricted TCN gift cards
• Other types of TCN gift cards

It depends on whether the TCN gift card website states that the TCN gift card you have can be redeemed at that participating retailer.

The gift card packaging should not be used in nearly all circumstances when trying to understand where a TCN gift card can be redeemed.

Participating retailers are typically added to or removed from at least one type of TCN gift card every few weeks. Physical TCN gift cards are only printed in batches and can take a number of months before they arrive at a retailer for sale, so the participating retailers printed on the gift card packaging is usually out of date by the time the gift cards arrive at a retailer.

TCN gift cards' terms and conditions also makes it very clear that the full and updated list of participating retailers is on the TCN website.

NOTE: This section is only in relation to the TCN gift cards that can only be redeemed at a list of participating retailers (e.g. HER, HIM, TEEN).

A physical TCN gift card can be redeemed in two ways:

• In-store (by swiping the gift card on the EFTPOS terminal), or
• Exchange (which is called online by TCN), where you can exchange part or all of the available balance of a TCN gift card for a participating retailer's digital gift card. This gift card can be redeemed in-store or online at a participating retailer (dependent on the retailer’s gift card’s terms and conditions).

A TCN gift card can be redeemed by swiping the physical TCN gift card on the EFTPOS terminal.

To redeem a TCN gift card in-store, tell the staff member at the checkout you would like to use a card. Do not mention anything about gift cards, as a participating retailer's checkout system may not be able to redeem TCN gift cards if the checkout is expecting a gift card issued by the store itself. For example, if you ask a staff member at a JB Hi-Fi checkout you would like to use a gift card and you attempt to use a TCN gift card, the checkout will be unable to redeem the TCN gift card, as the checkout is expecting the staff member to scan the barcode a JB Hi-Fi gift card.

A participating retailer may permit to a customer to redeem multiple TCN gift cards in one transaction. However, this is at the discretion of the individual participating retailer, as some participating retailers may not be set up to allow the redemption of multiple EFTPOS cards in one transaction. Examples of participating retailers that will permit multiple Ultimate gift cards to be redeemed in one transaction include JB Hi-Fi and The Good Guys.

A participating retailer may also place restrictions on the usage of an TCN gift card. For example, JB Hi-Fi and The Good Guys officially do not permit customers to use TCN gift cards as a payment method for JB Hi-Fi gift cards or The Good Guys gift cards (respectively). However, it is up to staff to enforce this policy, as there is nothing in the JB Hi-Fi checkout system that would automatically block anyone from using TCN gift cards to purchase JB Hi-Fi gift cards.

The TCN gift card scheme also features a gift card exchange portal, where you can exchange part or all of the available balance of a TCN gift card for a participating retailer's digital gift card.

However, not all participating retailers participate in the portal. The webpage for the TCN gift card will show a list of retailers that participate in the gift card exchange portal.

The exchange portal can be accessed through the TCN gift card website by following these steps:

• Go to the webpage for the TCN gift card you have
• Scroll down to the How To Use section
• Enter the gift card number into the box and select Continue (where required)
• Choose the desired participating retailer from the dropdown list
• Click/tap on the Online button to the right of the box or dropdown list (only required for participating retailers that permit TCN gift cards to be redeem in-store as well)
• Click/tap on Proceed
• Follow the subsequent steps to have the digital gift card emailed to you.

It depends on the participating retailer.

It depends on whether the participating retailer has placed any limits on the number of cards from a financial institution (e.g. EFTPOS, Visa, Mastercard) can be used in one transaction.

Physical TCN gift cards are EFTPOS gift cards, so they cannot be directly used for any online transactions at any participating retailer.

TCN operates a digital gift card exchange facility, where you can exchange part or all of the available balance of a TCN gift card for a digital gift card for some participating retailers. However, the retailers that participate in this facility will change from time to time and without prior notice. For instructions for accessing the exchange facility, please refer to a different FAQ.

The cardholder should check whether a participating retailer has any restrictions on how their digital gift card can be used for online transactions (e.g. can the digital gift card be redeemed online, how many digital gift cards can be redeemed in one transaction). For example:

• JB H-Fi currently allows an unlimited number of JB Hi-Fi gift cards to be redeemed in one online transaction.
• The Good Guys currently only allows a maximum of two The Good Guys gift cards to be redeemed in one online transaction.

Prepaid gift cards are open-loop gift cards that operate on the Visa, Mastercard or EFTPOS networks.

All prepaid gift cards listed above - excluding the Activ Visa gift card - require the gift card to be physically swiped on the EFTPOS terminal. If a merchant's EFTPOS terminal does not have the ability to read the magnetic stripe of a physical card, the prepaid gift card cannot be redeemed at that merchant.

The Activ Visa gift card can be physically swiped on the EFTPOS terminal or it can be added to a supported mobile wallet (Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet) and then redeemed via the mobile wallet.

Coles Mastercard Gift Cards by default only allow signature verification, but can be set up with a PIN specified by the cardholder.

Signature verification

Signature verification is only possible if no PIN has ever been set on the card. There is no PIN associated with the card when it is activated at the time of purchase, but the cardholder can choose any four-digit number as the PIN.

Coles Gift Mastercards are no longer being issued, but existing Coles Gift Mastercards can have their balances redeemed up until the expiry date printed on the front of the card.

Vanilla Visa gift cards only allow signature verification. It is not possible to set up a PIN on these cards. If a merchant requires PIN verification, the Vanilla Visa gift card cannot be redeemed at the merchant.

There are a number of different versions of OnlyONE Visa Prepaid Gift Cards sold at third-party retailers (e.g. Woolworths, BIG W, Kmart), and they either support only signature verification or only PIN verification. The small print on the back of the gift card packaging will indicate whether the enclosed prepaid gift card comes with a PIN. If the small print mentions that no PIN is required for in-person purchases, it means that it only supports signature verification.

A Visa or Mastercard prepaid gift card can be redeemed at an online merchant accepting Visa or Mastercard, as long as the online merchant permits the use of prepaid gift cards.

Prepaid gift cards are not tied to a specific person, so they cannot support security features that allow a payment processor to ask for verification when you attempt to complete a purchase online (e.g. 3D Secure). A number of merchants do not accept cards without 3D Secure support, including Reward Gateway, True Rewards via Cashrewards, and Everyday Pay (Woolworths Group’s QR-based payment method). Other merchants will block prepaid gift cards (or even prepaid cards) based on the bank identification number (BIN), including Prezzee and Woolworths Group's online gift card portal.

A workaround is to link a prepaid gift card to a PayPal account, then use PayPal at an online merchant (where PayPal is accepted) and select the linked prepaid gift card as the payment source.

An EFTPOS gift card cannot be redeemed online, as EFTPOS does not currently support online transactions.

Visa / Mastercard prepaid gift cards are more susceptible to unauthorised transactions than a regular Visa / Mastercard debit or credit card, due to a number of reasons:

• Issuers of Visa / Mastercard prepaid gift cards usually do not employ the sophisticated fraud detection algorithms typically seen on Visa / Mastercard debit or credit cards.
• Prepaid gift cards are usually created with a limited range of potential card numbers and expiry dates.
• Some online merchants do not require a CVN (card verification number) to be provided in order to attempt a payment.

The recommendation is to redeem Visa / Mastercard prepaid gift cards as quickly as possible to reduce the likelihood of being affected by unauthorised transactions. Although most issuers of Visa / Mastercard prepaid gift cards permit a cardholder to dispute transactions, the process for disputing transactions can be lengthy and require supporting documentation (including the original purchase receipt for the prepaid gift card, as well as personal ID). There are also time limits for disputing transactions, which are set by Visa / Mastercard themselves.

EFTPOS gift cards are not as susceptible to unauthorised transactions, because unauthorised transactions are almost always online transactions.

For EFTPOS gift cards, yes.

For Visa / Mastercard prepaid gift cards, not always.

Some merchants operating in specific merchant categories (e.g. hairdressers, restaurants, hotels, rental car places) may request a pre-authorisation amount that is up to 120% of the original transaction amount. However, when the transaction is no longer pending, the amount deducted from the Visa / Mastercard prepaid gift card will be settled at the transaction amount, and any additional funds set aside to cover the pre-authorisation amount will be returned the available balance.

This means you may not be able to redeem a prepaid gift card at some merchants, even though you think it has a sufficient available balance. For example, if a hairdresser wants to charge you $30 and you use a prepaid gift card as a payment method, the pre-authorisation charge may be $36. The difference between the pre-authorisation charge and the final transaction amount is returned to the available balance once the transaction has been settled.

This section details whether you can purchase gift cards in-store or online to trigger a cashback offer available on a debit or credit card from a financial instruction (e.g. American Express, Commonwealth Bank, Westpac).

This section does not cover Cashrewards or Shopback in-store cashback schemes.

NOTE:

The terms and conditions of some cashback offers from some retailers (e.g. Coles, Myer) will contain a clause specifically excluding purchases of gift cards. However, as long as the process for buying a gift card is the same process as buying regular items from that retailer and cashback is automatically credited to you, purchases of gift cards should be eligible.

For example, Myer offers usually list purchases of gift cards as an exclusion, but:

• Purchases of gift cards in-store are okay, because the process of purchasing of a gift card is the same as the process for purchasing bath towels, bed sheets, kitchen appliances, etc. The same checkouts are used and the same EFTPOS terminals are used. Having said that, if cashback is not automatically credited and it requires follow-up with the financial institution, the financial institution is likely require a copy of the purchase receipt, which will increase the likelihood of cashback being denied.

• Purchases of gift cards online are not okay, because Myer sells gift cards online on a dedicated website with a URL different to the Myer website. A financial institution can tell the purchase was made on a different website, and as such will automatically decline any cashback.
