One of those unusual items that turn up when I need it.
    Groovies.

  • Can I use this to pump out water from my 3 feet aquarium??

I always thought the rule of thumb was to use a siphon to get water out of the aquarium, and to use a pump to get water into the aquarium.

Either way these types of units are designed to pump huge quantities of water out of flooding basements and other large bodies of mucky water. Much better off with something that won't empty an aquarium in a few seconds so that you have more control of the flow.

You can if you want. If you have a bare bottom tank the this can do the trick. But personally I like to siphon as I can pick all the waste my discus dumps. I use a pump to pump clean water back into the tank.

It's probably a bit of an overkill, and you'd find you'd still have to bale or siphon it out of the bottom.

  • Wow, people buying dirty water pumps! And I thought I was a cheapskate.

  • Another way to use this is to use a fat hose to siphon into a bucket next to your tank and then use a pump to get it from the bucket to the garden. You need to match the flow rates in theory, but with a float switch it doesn't matter.

  • If you didn't want to deal with dealsdirect bigpond store has this for the everyday price of $37 with free shipping.

  • Seriously, this kind of pump is not what you want for fish tanks. It's massive overkill.

I have something similar (from Aldi). It advises against using an outlet pipe smaller than 30mm. I ignore this (of course) and have it pump out through 19mm ag-pipe.

I have my washing machine emptying into a tub - kind of like a huge bucket, a couple of hundred litres worth. The dirty water pump is in the tub, and pumps the water out once the float switch floats high enough. Even through the undersized pipe, it empties the tub faster than the washing machine can fill it.

I don't know anything about fish, but I can't imagine you want that sort of flow rate. Especially if you're considering syphoning as an alternative.

  • Shipping for me was $12.95 it was not half price.
