  • Is it actually worth getting amex for these promotions?

I've been holding off on getting any sort of credit card for a while..

    • +5

Seems to be pretty good. Esp the Qantas Discovery card. $0 annual fee.

The customer service when ever you ring AMEX is always 101% the best! Very polite etc. Even if you call at 1am.

      • Amex customer service - I cannot complain about any bad service - agree with Turd - willing to help, flexible etc.

ANZ credit cards - complete opposite. I suggest staying away from them. Very rigid. Do not want to help even clients like me who were with them 10 years plus. Cancelled my credit card with them recently and have not looked back.

        • +1

i agree mick123, i've called amex help line a couple of times, one of the best.

where as ANZ's, couldnt be bothered to help regardless of being a long term customer. will cancel my card with ANZ, since i have amex and visa from somewhere else,.

        • Commonwealth Bank being bad as well recently. Tried to provide my visa documents, call centre staff seems not being well-trained, I was provided misleading information by phone staff and bring a wrong document to the branch. Waste a lot of time and money on running between branch and calling over the phone. When I lodge a complaint to 132221, a "Team Leader" told me they have to stick their procedure even they provided me misleading information, then she told me "If you don't want it, don't get it". All right, I cancel it!

        • lol really? i called up Commbank 2 nights ago at about 8:30pm and the girl on the other side was great. pleasant and helpful she was. It was an issue on my behalf, but she walked me through and all was solved. Did you end up solving your issue?

    • +2

I would suggest getting an account with both AMEX & Visa/Mastercard.

That way you get the best of both worlds - The minimal fees of using Visa/MC + Promos and extra points when using AMEX for certain other situations.

      • For example Westpac have a setup like this. Packaged with our home loan, there is no separate annual fee.

      • +8

Some of these deals are only for AMEX AMEX only.
So you'll need an AMEX direct from AMEX, not Bank issued AMEX.

        Such as for this promo.

Only American Express Cards issued by American Express Australia Limited are Eligible Cards:
Supplementary Cards qualify as an Eligible Card only if registered for the Offer separately.

        • And there's no real reason not to get an AMEX AMEX, given some of them are free (and give you Qantas points).

        • +3

I signed up with my bank's AMEX and it worked.

        • Cool. Try and buy something. I dunno how strict these T&C's are followed.

        • Where is a free Amem issued Amex with Qantas points?

        • The signup worked with my bank issued Amex, but we can't be certain that AMEX will honor it.

Chances are they won't have in stock what I want anyway (mini2). But if I order online that day, and they send it 10 days later, if they billed me that day I should be eligible?

        • I signed up with my Westpac Amex, i got a confirmation email within a minute to say i was successful in registering

        • I'm wondering the same thing too. I'm not sure when we get billed for backordered items.

        • I think you people should be more worried that they won't apply the $50 statement credit at all even if you do get billed inside the timeframe

        • Worked a treat, got $50 credited to my Westpac Amex on the 02/12

  • +10

Great deal. I'm unlikely to use, so I'll leave a registration spot open for someone else.

    • -7

Although… you could buy something then return it with the 14 day return policy, and possibly still keep the $50 credit. I can't be bothered trying.

      • +3

        I dont think you can.

The following are not Eligible Transactions:
        3. Transactions that are subsequently cancelled or refunded]

      • it's not 14 days……Can return by 7th Jan…Apple's Holiday return policy is on now

        • Do you have a link for this please?

        • +2

even google can give you the link in few seconds.
          http://store.apple.com/au/help/returns_refund

        • Correct me if I'm wrong (I haven't really looked into it), but I thought it was 14 days still in store, and only extended for online purchases.

        • in store as well. confirmed with manager

  • Ask Apple to Price match better pricing from elsewhere

    • ^ They always do without much trouble.

  • Thanks OP!

    • No problems!

  • Maybe I should just buy the iPad Air 64 WiFi from Apple instead of waiting for Big W stock.

  • When does iPad mini 2 release?

    • It's already on sale

      • In store or online only? The news reports I've read it launched online only, sold out immediately, and there's a 10 day wait.

  • I'm curious as to what specials will be available on the 29th Nov. Does anyone have any idea?

    • I doubt there will be specials on iPad, besides every day lower pricing of places like Big W.

      • It definitely will.

      • There ad shows iPad in there. iPad will be there for sure…..

        • There's always iPad ads. And the price is their every day price…

        • Are we talking about specials at Apple shop or BigW, DSE, etc?

  • Many thanks, op!

  • Hope Apple will price match with Big W - $548!

    • -5

Apple never price matches anyone. It's not their MO.

If you buy wi-fi versions it's a bigger saving than Big W. If you buy cellular, it's the same price.

      • +1

I've never had problems matching prices at Apple Stores, especially if it's a major retailer like Big W or the like.

      • I have always been able to get the local Apple retail store (George St, Sydney/Chatswood) with DSE, BigW advertised specials. Have done this about half a dozen times now for the past couple of years without any issues. Just need to show them the ad, sometimes they will ring the local shop to confirm stock.

      • Apple never price matches

        Experience says otherwise

  • Hmm…will the iPad Air, with a $50 AMEX credit (discount) be a bargain on Friday? Time will tell…just visited the Apple store and the 16gb Air is $598 - $50 credit = $548…cane we find it any cheaper at the moment?

    • Same as big w this week if you order online and click and collect.

      • then ask apple to price match BigW and it will be 50 cheaper.

    • For those who travel overseas, they can get another 10% back

  • Many thanks OP.
Has anyone been successful at getting Apple stores to price match Big W for ipads? Looking at getting iPad air 128GB wifi. $868 (if possible) - $50 (Amex credit) - $82 (TRS) = $737? Cheers.

    • should be fine.

      • But BigW does not have it in stock.

    • +1

Did you try to contact them?

    • +1

Have you waited the 8 weeks as stated in the T&Cs? If not, invalid Neg.

  • +1

So correct me if i'm wrong but:

    for 16gb ipad air

    from BigW - $568 , with spend 250 save 20 voucher, and save 2.2% from starthere - gives 535.5
from Apple store - $598 - 50 from this amex promotion, and save 1.1% from starthere - gives about 542.

unless theres a further reduction on friday on apple store,
    seems big W is better..

    • spend 250 save 20 voucher for bigw is online only the 16gb ipad air isn't available online.. only instore…

    • I would be very surprised if there is no discount on ipads on Friday, but will be surprised if it is 10% or more.

      • Last year it was $90 off all models from memory

        • $40

        • I stand corrected. it may have been year prefer that!

        • *before

    • +2

Price match the BigW price first at Apple in-store.
      So $568 - 50 = 518
Give up the starthere and spend some time travelling to the store.

  • +1

Hmm… Apple online store… Does that include EPP websites?

  • I wonder $50 statement credit applies if I buy a $500 Apple gift card (not iTunes card).

    • -3

I THINK it will work. Because AMEX will see the biller as Apple and then approve the $50.

Dont quote me on it though.

    • The following are not Eligible Transactions:
      2. Purchasing gift cards from a merchant

    • The following are not Eligible Transactions:

      1. Purchasing a merchant's goods through a third party, such as through a department store, concession store, online aggregator or retailer
      2. Purchasing gift cards from a merchant
      3. Transactions that are subsequently cancelled or refunded]
      4. Purchases from iTunes
  • ohhhh bugger it!! i just bought an iPad Mini Retina yesterday with my Amex. was prepared to miss out on the Friday sale but this $50 off together with the potential discount in the Friday sale will make a very attractive price.

wonder if i can return and re-buy the same unit?? i don't want to return and buy a new one as the one i've just bought has the prefect screen and everything…

    • Buy a new one with your amex card and then return that.

      • don't think that'll work. t&c states that cancelled transactions don't count.

        • He meant return the original one.

        • not really keen on doing that… it took me 3 refunds to finally get one with the perfect screen. don't wanna play the apple lotto again..

        • What do you mean "perfect screen"? dead pixels?

        • -2

no dead pixel, no stuck pixel, no extreme light bleed, no yellowing, no discoloration in different parts of the screen etc.

        • ahh lol. so picky! hehe

  • Can I split the payment to two cards (or more)?

    • +1

Doubt it but doesn't hurt to ask…

I've registered 3 cards so far, will attempt to ask them to price match Dick Smith's pricing on the iMac 27" and run it across 3 cards if possible.

EDIT: scratch that, they're exactly 1 day apart. Bugger.

      • whats 1 day apart? i want to split payment over my two amex cards too & possible get $100 back?

        • Possible, since you register each card.

          Even supplimentary cards are possible!

"Supplementary Cards qualify as an Eligible Card only if registered for the Offer separately."

        • What's 1 day apart? Dick Smith's family and friends sale thingie on the 28th and this Amex/Apple promo starts on 29th so I can't even attempt to get Apple to pricematch Dick's offer.

  • There seems to be a contradiction. Is it only for Friday 29th, or is it from 27/11 to 5/12?

Spend $500 before 5th Dec 2013 on your registered Card to ensure you are eligible for the $50 credit back.

    • And as an extra gift from American Express, when you register your Card and spend $500 or more from Friday 29 November to Thursday 5 December, you’ll receive $50 statement credit.

The apple event is on the Fri 29th, that's different to this AMEX promo.

      • Does the $500 have to be spent at Apple, or anywhere?

The wording "AMEX $50 Credit if You Spend $500 or More Online at Apple Store Online or Apple Shop" implies the two are linked.

  • +1

Has anyone been successful at price matching at Chadstone (Melbourne) Apple store?

  • I WANT IPAD AIR - whats the absolute cheapest price I can get one for? - time to start scrounging for vouchers

  • -1

Only American Express Cards issued by American Express Australia Limited are Eligible Cards

    • Well it accepted my NAB Velocity AMEX… In the past I've used these AMEX cash back deals on my NAB card

      • +1

There are two different types of cash back deals. Those for Amex issued cards and those for bank issued Amex cards. This deal is for Amex issued cards. If you don't get the cash back then you aren't entitled to it. If you do, good luck to you.

        • -4

Rubbish. I agree with the previous poster - if your card is accepted through the application process, then you receive the deal. I have a bank issue CBA Amex, and it worked fine this time round, but also on all prior occasions. I also received the confirmation email. Perhaps you should get your facts straight before making baseless statements which could potentially turn away prospective bargain hunters.

        • +2

          baseless statements

          Refer to the T&Cs

Registering for the promotion and actually receiving the cash back are two different things.
As I said, if it works, good luck to you. Don't count on it working and you won't be upset if it doesn't.

        • I dunno I beg to differ, I've never seen an Amex deal that states or differentiates bank issues vs. amex issued.

ie - I know theres amexconnect which is different again

But if they don't honour it then bad on Amex as their systems should identify which cards aren't amex issued and spit back a reject screen.

I'm sure some others may have also registered assuming it works for all Amex cards without reading the nitty gritty.

        • I dunno I beg to differ, I've never seen an Amex deal that states or differentiates bank issues vs. amex issued.

There have been some that are for Amex issued cards only, but in those cases my bank issued card was rejected from registering.

This time it was accepted, so I assume it will work. Only problem is Apple will get
Ozbargained that day and what I'm after is already in short supply.

        • -2

Well I guess you can't accept that you're wrong.

  • +1

Becareful when ordering online as Apple don't charge your card until the item ready to be shipped. So if you order an item that states 5-10 working days, then it won't be charge to your card immediately. I ordered two ipad mini over the weekend. One just went to being ready for shipping and my card was just charged. The other not yet. So hopefully the other get charged in 2 days time and I will be entitled to the $50 credit.
