I feel like I'm not a part of OzBargain until I have a microserver. Must resist…

    • +2

Personally I think the N40L was better value, because you can hack more drives into it, other than the standard four :)

      • +3

N54L can have just as many HDDs jammed in as the N40L. Same chassis, same bios (and modded bios). It's the G8 where you lose that home-hacker expandability.

      • +12

        I'm running 6 x 4TB in my N54L…. so there ;)

        Have a look: http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w159/SteveAndBelle/685d83…

        • +4

What a beast! I am poor so I have 1x4TB in mine!

        • What's that Sonos hack you've done ;) ?

        • About six years ago I ripped a couple of my SONOS Zone players apart to make an in-Car and a stand-alone Party SONOS. I think the pics you saw are of the Party SONOS. Both are on the SONOS forums and both worked well but weren't quite good enough. Fingers crossed the SONOS people saw the mods and make official versions one day!

        • Ah cool, that is smart :)

Sonos need to pull their finger out, implement DTS and become smarter with their pricing ah, whilst I am add it, implement a playbar with HDMI, that was a silly decision just having optical.

Back to topic, getting off course here myself :)

NL54's are splendid, specially for small VM labs, work really well with ESXi, also as a semi descent HTPC. As for those that want to run DSM on these, yes you can do it but save yourself a headache and just buy a Synology or build your own NAS with your flavour of OS.

The WD reds are really good, seems like a good deal :)

Tried to add a bit more detail to the above comment but smokenmirraz replied before I could, thanks mate :P

I needed to snip a small section of the 5.25" bay away to allow for the cables for the front HDD however the rear HDD cables fit not problem. Both drives stay in place purely by friction but I laid some true industrial strength double sided tape onto the floor of the bay just to keep them anchored in case they wanted to wiggle around… others may choose to make up brackets but I personally don't think that's required. I connected one of the extra drives to the SATA port on the motherboard and the other is connected to the eSATA port on the back so no need for any extra hardware either just a SATA to eSATA cable and a 4-Pin to double-SATA Power adaptor cable! The N54L BIOS & FreeNAS (running off USB on the M/Board) detected all drives no probs and I created my 14TB+ RADIZ2 Volume in no time. 24TB worth of physical storage reduced down to 14TB but this allows for ultimate redundancy which is what I desired.

As you can see there's (just) enough space to add another two HDDs on top so theoretically you could run 8 x 4TB drives but you'd need to add a controller card to do that plus heat would probably start becoming an issue too but it just goes to show what the N54L is capable of.

One power surge and all 16TB fried at once.

        • +1

Yep agreed but a surge/spike is unlikely to get through my online UPS plus I have all the raw CD/DVD/BD rips, purchased media & other important data on my old NAS stored in my fire safe plus another backup of the critical stuff stored at my Dads place. Yes, I'm paranoid ;)

still don't know what one does.

    Brilliant coupon code this week!

  • +11

I'm loving the service from Shopping Express. I bought a printer from them and the next day the price dropped by $2. Being a tightass ozbargainer, I called them to see if I can be refunded the difference. They said they would send me a USB worth even more.
Thanks SE, I respect you more than brick and mortar stores.

Can we get a combo deal with a WD 4tb red?

    • I'd like this option too.

    • +1

      Forgot to say please.

    • +1

      Hey guys,

      post have been revised :).

      regards
      SE

  • I still haven't used my g8… from the xmas sale… waiting for 4TB hdd to come down in price… they have hardly moved….

    http://camelcamelcamel.com/Seagate-SATA-Cache-Drive-ST4000VN…

    150 shouldn't be toooooooo far away…

  • The $399 deal inc. 1TB and GT210 was a fantastic price. It's about $440 with the combo today.

  • +2

Oh how I wish HP would release an N75L or something, the new form factor suckssssss but the old one lacks USB3, HDMI and the CPU, while ok - it's about 50% too slow if you really throw a lot at your microserver :(

I own 4 of these things.

  • I REALLY want a N54L to replace my current Synology DS211j as its only a 2 bay and have filled that up with 2x3TB drives and now have a 2TB external attached and will soon enough have to add another 3-4TB external as well.

Only thing stopping me is having to then buy new drives to transfer my current storage to the new server. It'll be a nasty amount of money for the changeover. If only there was an easy way..

  • +2

Good deal (not as good as the boxing day deal when N54L was $199).

If anyone wants to settle for a N36L there is a seller on eBay selling overstock of N36L for an absolute bargain. $80 + postage. My mates and I picked up 5 recently :)

    • +1

      $80 + postage.

      Postage is a whopping $65!

30 Day return to base warranty on DOA. (buyer pays both way shipment costs - so far 0 faulty units).
NO LOCAL PICKUP AVAILABLE. NO NEGOTIATION. NO HAGGLING.
      NO REFUNDS. NO RETURNS.
We Ship Items on Wednesdays, please ensure you have paid prior to 5PM Tuesday.

Comes with 1GB RAM and a 160GB hard drive.

    • If i am not wrong, it is plus $65 for shipping.

    • +2

dodgy seller, try to avoid ebay fees and refund fee if there is DOA refund $80 instead of $145 if you decide to open a dispute via paypal. BEWARE

      • Did you have a DOA?

      • Pretty sure you get a replacement for a DOA. We ended up getting 5x for a net price of $125 each. He was also selling non-ECC RAM relatively cheap as well (although not sure if he has these listed). $70 for 2x4GB Kingston.

        • +1

The description says you pay shipping both ways for a DOA. So that means you'll have to pay $65 for shipping back to you, plus whatever it cost to ship it to him… lets say $30. $95 in shipping to cover a DOA is a bit rich. I wonder if Paypal protection will work then.

        • I find it unlikely that the shipping cost for a DOA is $65. Worthwhile finding out though if you are concerned about DOA units.

    • +1

I Agree. I bought one a few weeks ago and for $145 delivered I really found it hard to justify the extra for the N54L. I put the savings towards non-ECC Kingston RAM instead and my new N36L now sits there with 16Gb in its belly. I'm still at the playing stage with OSes though!

He might charge $65 for postage, but it is still a cheap microserver.

    • Hmmm anyone know if N36L + dedicated graphics cards = smooth playback of HD and or Full HD under XBMC?

      • Of course - if the card can handle decoding.
I used a GT520 for a while, and was lovely and smooth (ubuntu + XBMC)

  • Any recommendations as to which RAM to use as an additional stick in the N54L?

    • I will also need 2GB more, best if it is the same as the stock ones in N54L.

    • If your total ram is going to be 8gb or less, pretty much anything will do. I put one of these 4gb non-ecc (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/100767) in with the stock 2gb ecc, and Ubuntu was fine with it. Later upgraded to a second 4gb non-ecc and gave the 2gb ecc to a friend.

  • Any chance of some SSD options? Thanks in advance.

    • We have SSD, Graphics cards & PC components promotion in today's upcoming newsletter promotion - will try to put a link here when it is up. :)

    • Sandisk SSD in promotion

Adding this ssd into your microserver purchase will not incur additional freight charges.

  • Store Rep. Any good deals coming up on WD Red 3tb and 4tb drives?

  • Store Rep. Any chance you can do a good deal on a Monitor as well??

    • Any specific types?

      • Bought the Asus VS248H already with the package. Too late to ask for discount?

        • Hi woekoa,

Not much i can on this particular model, but please PM me your order ID nonetheless. I will see what i can do :).

  • Maybe I should sell the G8 I got in the last bundle and get a N54L instead. Does anyone know if the N54L will boot Debian from the stock bios?

    • It'll boot Ubuntu fine. So I assume Debian would too. Just can't boot off a partition bigger than 2tb. Regardless of OS or whether you have stock or modded BIOS.

      • Thanks, the G8 apparently does Ubuntu fine but needs some tricks for vanilla Debian. If anyone wants a G8 in Sydney have a look in the classified forum

  • I am so tempted to buy but im still hanging out for an Acer AC100, that thing is a beast.

    • Yeah I just got one with a Xeon - it's pretty good - haven't had a chance to really stress it yet though.

  • Which hard drives would you guys recommend for a Raid 1 on the N54L? Looking into building my first home server for back up, as a media server etc. This one looks good as a beginner. Any other tips?

    • +1

I like going with two drives of the same size from different manufacturers, e.g. one Hitachi and one Seagate. That way a catastrophic firmware failure (hello bricked 7200.11!) will not affect the whole array.

      • Was that the Seagate Barracuda? I successfully unbricked mine when that happened. It is still running fine today but I have forever steered clear of Seagate drives.

        • What software are you using to do local network backup for windows sever and windows client?

        • Yup that's the one. A raid array filled with those drives would have lost everything, at least temporarily.

        • What software are you using to do local network backup for windows sever and windows client?

For a file backup, I use Crashplan. It's free and works great.
For the OS image, I use Acronis TrueImage or just the built-in Windows backup.

  • silly question to ask : but is it in any way possible to "tweak" this rig to become "hot-swappable" ?

    thanks in advance..

  • Do these nas servers use much power?

Do they have a auto off fiction and when you wanna use it it turns itself on?

    • No they don't use much power

Power management (eg suspend when idle, wake on LAN etc) is done at the OS level (so yes, if you set it up using something like Lights Out)

  • +1

    Ok thanks
Might finally have to get one

  • Store Rep, any chance of a HP N54L Microserver and HP 8 Port Gigabit Managed Switch J9833A?

  • Store Rep,

Is there any stock HD included? Not found anywhere in the description.

    Thanks

    • Hi userblocked,

Both microservers do not come with any HDD preinstalled.

      Kind Regards
      SE

      • Are you sure it doesn't come with a 250gb drive? It does in the US and Europe.

        :)

        • +2

          Hi gabicava83,

Unfortunately N54Ls in Australia do not come with 250GB preinstalled.

          Kind Regards
          SE

      • So what's the point buying this is not HDD preinstalled.

Have to invest extra for HDD and that's why you are offering combo.

Thanks for your quick reply anyway. :)

        • +4

most people would throw out the 250gb to make room for another 4tb drive, if they want serious storage. including it is a waste.

        • +2

Not really. You can easily move the 250GB to the optical drive bay and run it off the optical SATA port without any bios mods. Still gives you 4 bays for other HDDs.

250GB is a great size to run one or more OS's on.

        • true. I'll concede that. :)

        • Having said that my mate threw his out (in place of a SSD for his OS) so I took it and did the above :P

  • I still didn't get the server I ordered one month ago. Even that was DOA and took more than a week to return to shopping express, it has been more than 2 weeks after they said they gonna send replacement. I cannot believe they didn't send replacement yet. I have contacted more than 10 times and they always said "We gonna send TODAY"

and they are doing promotion on the same model.

Rep, what is your hidden agenda of dragging my delivery?

    • Hi alphasing,

Before I can provide you an adequate answer, can you please PM me your ticket id?

      Kind Regards
      SE

    • What was the outcome of this?

      • Finally I got a call from them after I made a comment to this thread (might be coincidence). They send me a tracking# of my delivery. Unfortunately, nobody was at home this morning and couldn't receive yet. Hope replacement model is not DOA this time.

  • Hi rep,
I need an extra wd red 2tb to be in the N54L combo deal for mirroring. So 1x n54 + 2x wd red 2tb. Any chance to include it in the deal? I'll pm you my hardware config in more detail.
    Thanks

    • please pm me the details - ill see what i can do.

  • ordered, gen8 + 2 x 8gb ram

edit - meant to ask, estimated delivery time to perth?

    • Hi rogue5,

Once your order has been dispatched, it should take around 4 to 6 business days.

      Regards
      SE

      • hey thanks :) hope it goes out today!

  • silly question to ask - but with the hard drive bays - are they "hot-swappable" ? and any ideas how to combine/mix & match hard drive capacities? I'm thinking of a 4TBx2 & 2 TBx2 config..

think i got me answer -

    Maximum Internal Storage Non-Hot Plug SATA 12TB (4 x 3TB) 3.5" SATA

    • It will take 4tb drives. You just can't boot off a partition greater than 2tb.

Stock, they're not hot swappable. But I think I read somewhere there is a BIOS mod to make them hot swappable. It might be bundled in the same BIOS that enables trim and full speed on the optical drive bay's sata port.

  • Did anyone purchase the Kingston 8GB Non registered ECC ram and notice that the seal had been broken and slight wear marks on the gold pins on the ram?
Not sure if I should send it back or not

    • i'll let you know once i receive mine - hopefully tomorrow if lucky

      • The REP told me that it's standard for them to open the ram and place their warranty stickers on it.
And I guess the wear marks on the gold pins were from the ram possibly being tested at the factory .

        • just arrived, ram was opened for warranty stickers but all looks good
