VIC / QLD / WA METRO - Coles Catalouge Misprint - Chicken Breast Fillets Skin Off - $5/kg

511

Sale starts Thursday 25th June.
This is a misprint, it doesn't look like one until you look carefully.
If you look on page 13 you will see there is a recipe asking to use roast chicken, but it seems they have included a picture of chicken breast with the roast chicken price (roast chicken is much cheaper than breast)
Even at the wholesale chicken shop, I haven't seen chicken breast (and that's skin-on) for less than $7/kg.
Will Coles honour this?

Don't forget buy them pre-packaged from the meat department (in pre-packaged trays) and not from the deli.
Ignore the correction notice (pretend you didn't see it) and go to the checkout, then after checkout, go to the service desk and tell them it's wrong, produce catalogue.
Let's see if Coles will be arses or not.

Here is the whole picture for those that don't have a Coles catalogue.

On the opposite side of the page there is a recipe idea too (which is correct)

I'm a vegetarian, but at this price, I'll convert !!!

  • "Will Coles honour this?"
The first person to provide the answer wins some cheap chook (maybe).
It's in the QLD METRO catalogue starting this Thursday also.
Eye 4 Won would like to know if Coles will honour this. If so, we'll be stocking up on chicken breasts on the Enterprise

this is potentially an excellent deal, if coles actually honours this. No doubt i get there early Thurs morning, and there is a catalogue correction notice at the front of the store :( but i'm still going to try!

  • hopefully they don't notice until after we buy some.

  • It must be a misprint, I'm guessing they will have to honour it but my local Coles are slow to move out stock from the back dock. They ALWAYS do this when they have a really good deal on Softdrinks and chips.

  • Why a misprint is it normally much dearer?

    • +2

yeh, i think usually on special it sells for about $11.99/kg, so $5/kg is absolutely CHEAP

  • +3

    i like chicken

      clap clap for the handicapped

    • -1

Me too. I also like that ad on TV for the 'people who don't like chicken' hotline

      I like turtles

  • +5

It is a misprint. The recipe is for whole chicken. And whole chicken is usually $5.99/kg And the price says $5/kg save 99c. Someone's is gonna roll for this mistake!

    • +4

You could say, someone is going to get the chop!

  • it is $12.99 a kilo in my catalog (Adelaide Metro)

  • NSW catalogue has $13/kg.

That ties in with the comment about the price for a whole chicken and recipe being for that. The NSW catalogue has a recipe with breast fillets so it looks like that was the base, and they updated the rest but not the image/text for Vic.

I'm going to officeworks and to see if they can beat the price by 5%

    • I wonder if Scotty's thought about a prize for most voted comment of the week.
      You got mine DoeyDude!
I'm only kicking myself for not having thought of it…

  • +3

I can confirm that is a 99.99% misprint as in our SA catalogue is show $12.00

  • 25+ votes for a misprint? Wow!
    Nice work Kelly666 though…..

    • +3

I did state in the title that's it's most likely a misprint.
I never knew my post would become so popular!
It's strange opening OzBargain last night and this morning and the top post is mine!

      • +1

Yeah fair enough Kelly666, and good on you too - its strange to have so many +ve votes for a misprint……

  • +7

If I remember correctly from Legal Framework 101 at uni, a catalogue (or a price tag) is legally known as "an invitation to treat". You can the refer to that price to make an offer, which the vendor can accept or decline (contract speak: offer and acceptance).

No vendor is under any obligation to honour any advertised price, whether made in error or not. They'll simply decline your "offer" and, if you're lucky, they may apologise for any inconvenience :)

    • +1

I'm surprised at that. I thought it's classed as false advertising, they are basicly tricking you to get you in store to buy other products. Specials are there to get customers in to buy other things. Customer sees cheap chicken breast at Coles, goes to Coles instead of Woolworths to do all their shopping.
They will be getting the benifit of this without having to sell the special product at a loss.

I would go and try and buy some, but i try to only eat free range chicken.

      • +3

But what if the advertising is clearly a genuine error, with no intention to "trick" you into the stores?

Not every error is false advertising.

I think this Coles error (if it indeed is one) is a genuine error and we should cut them some slack coz it happens to the best of us.

    • +1

And there is always the newspaper apology or a sorry note next to the product

    • +1

In reality, large companies like Coles are often willing to give you the item at a loss, rather than give customers a bad experience in their store.

      • +3

If you're willing to make an ass of yourself in public for chicken breast…

Seriously if you desperately need chicken this cheap then go for it but just remember that you sold your dignity for it. I work at woolies and I've seen some interesting people. If it's a misprint, as redback said, they don't have to give it to you at the price shown but if you're nice and civil chances are the managers will give it to you at this price.

        • +1

but some customers really dont have dignity.unless you give it at its price, they wont leave and keep bugging you.

lucky I dont work at woolies anymore. I had enough :)

        • +3

OK relax a little, I'm the last person to make a fuss to get some cheap chicken. All I'm saying that is often big stores will OFFER to give it to you cheap if you're genuinely inconvenienced by their error. I'm not saying go around to every store and scam cheap chicken from all of them.

      1. It may not against the contract act, but such behaviour definitely prohibitted by Trading Practice Act.

      2. Any vendor involved in such behaviour will be penalized by the market.

      • Lol — let's see you file a writ of summons and we'll see how much in damages you can get. Or maybe you're looking to injunct Coles from printing a mistake =P

  • +1

If Coles management is wise enough, they should honour the misprint. For Coles, the misprint is not a big deal. If you work in Coles, you would know how much deli are thown in the bin everyday.

    • +1

they know they throw a lot yet they dont mark down more than 20%! at least its what is happening at my woolies.

  • Yeh i work at coles and a large proportion of meat usually gets marked down or thrown out.

  • Even though it "might" not be law for coles to offer this. They might well do so due to "customer service". Depends how good management are… coz taking off a few bucks off chicken might be better off than having complaints running in the door.

  • -1

I'm going to go and buy 3kg, pay for it, stop and look at receipt, and if they have charged me more than $5/kg, I'm going to go to the service desk, produce the catalogue and explain their mistake.
Hopefully I will get it for $5/kg, but I could also score it for free (like when the ticket is wrong)

    • +1

They may already be aware of the error and have some "apology" note in the vicinity of the "$5/kg" chicken breast ready to go, referring to the misprint in the catalogue. I guess we'll see how they handle it…

  • -1

You could buy it, then take it back and say you got charged $11.99 instead of $5.

They will either charge $5 or take the return back, but they cannot restock the food so it gets thrown out.

Would show them for being so deceptive in their advertising practices (or are your telling me they don't have someone to proof read a publication going out to 2m+ people).

  • +3

yeh definitely looks like a misprint to me..
+ i actually work at a coles deli in sydney, and ive never seen breast fillets at $5/kg..
    usually around $10ish..

  • Will be going to check this out, but I would bet on signs all over about the misprint, so normal price will be charged. Whats even better is you should get another $1 back if you are doing the flybuys cashback card thing.

  • +1

    Good job!!! :)
We'll need to see what happens on Thursday ;)

  • well Dell ran away with that and it wasnt a typo.
Coles will just put a notice of the typo and if someone insists on buying it for that price; and they feeel being nice; they will let them buy 1 Kilo for that price. not worth the trouble really. its a misprint.

  • +4

Funny how this is getting so many +ve votes when it's clearly a misprint and the sale hasn't started yet :)

  • +1

Coles had some meat about a month ago (in NSW anway) that was half price and was prominently displayed in the catalogue (front page I think), it WASN'T a misprint, so maybe this wont me a misprint either.

davem stated: "Would show them for being so deceptive in their advertising practices (or are your telling me they don’t have someone to proof read a publication going out to 2m+ people)."
I agree, if it IS a misprint then they should be more careful AND also honour it (and just not put much out (but this would be also wrong)).

    • +1

      Read AntMan76's reply below…

Normal price, minus 99c, does not equal $5.

Some part of the ad IS a misprint, whether it be the sale price or saving amount.

  • +4

It is a misprint cause chicken breast fillets were never being sold for $5.99/kg.

    • -5

      prove it…

  • +4

LOL i went to sleep and come back with +62 votes…(which ironically is more than the deal itself) thanks guys! ;D

It fills my heart with warmth to know that i'm spending my time wisely entertaining ozbargainers…as opposed to studying for my exam thats on tomorrow…

  • +4

    READ!!!

I called Coles Customer Service, it IS a MISPRINT.

It's $5 for a whole chicken, the picture and label is wrong.

    • +1

Well yeah, all of us already know that.

  • -7

$5.99-$6.99 skin on is common where I live. Coles and Woolworths are one of the most expensive places to buy meat. And their stuff isn't always the freshest.

If you live in a city there's usually a better option (market, retail park vendor, etc)

And Coles 'too good to be true offers' are often limited to a limited number of items.

Or in this case a missprint (that I guess won't be honoured)

  • +1

    interesting to see tomorrows outcome

  • +2

LOL tightwad…i've never seen chicken breasts for 6bucks ANYWHERE.

Do you by any chance have your own Chicken Pen in your backyard? goes to get meat cleaver

    • It was 6bucks 5 year ago from Central Mkt in Adelaide

      • +3

5 years ago? lol that's a fair comparison right there.

  • -1

Don't forget to get them from the meat department (in pre-packaged trays) and not from the deli.
Ignore the correction notice (pretend you didn't see it) and go to the checkout, then after checkout, goto service desk and tell them it's wrong.

  • +6

Woo. Worked for me at Coles at Centro in Townsville - first load of chicken free, 2nd at $5/kg. They said it was a printing mistake, but they didn't seem terribly aware of it though.

    Anyone else have success elsewhere?

    • +1

      That is ace! Free chicken!
How many Kilos did you get?

      • +2

3.1kg in total - not much, but good for $8 in total (after first item free). Tasted good for tonight's dinner :) It would normally have been $45 at retail cost, so $37 off.

Could have milked it for more but the missus would have had my head; figured 3kg was a safe bet!

        • +1

Well I'm happy somebody saw my post and got a good deal :-)
          That's $2.58/KG

        • -4

youre too greedy. why take advantage like that? couldnt pay a few dollars for some chicken?

          • @[Deactivated]: 3KG is not greedy. If Coles let him buy it then there's no problem. Greedy is when Dell have a pricing mistake and people order 50 $8 HDDs simply to resell. Do you think RockDJ only buys chicken when it's a pricing mistake? It's likely he needed it anyway and just took advantage of it, where Coles were happy enough to oblige.

  • -1

i just called a friend who works at coles. she said there is an apology issued and its at the front of her store (Inglewood, WA). dunno if it is this way in all stores, might be an idea to check before claiming the $5 special.

  • +1

Yeah it appears that WA stores are well aware of the mistake.
Apology stickers are all over the meat section and the price (with 99c off) is still around the $13/kg mark.

    • $13/kg?? Wow!

Saw $7.80/kg at Woolworths Carlton (VIC) today..
$15 should last a week or two.
