Short summary of reviews :
A tablet that punches above its weight (at the retail price of $199) with an excellent screen and great battery life
Mediocre camera (but who really buys a tablet for its camera???)
Slightly plastic body

I think its a great buy for $99, and from an established manufacturer, but i'll leave it open for the community to discuss =)

The usual $5 off coupon for subscribing to their emails as well.

Maybe grab 2 for $163 if you use the coupon and managed to sign up for the Amex Deal below https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/146939 - $30 credit on spend of $150+ until june 30th at HN
Any other professional suggestions?
Maths included for reference purposes : $99 + $99 - $5 (coupon) - $30 (Amex Credit) = $163

Enjoy!

I ran a bunch of benchmarks to compare this to the HP 7 Plus I got from the Officeworks deal couple weeks ago.

If anyone is interested, the results are here.

In real world use (web browsing, watching videos, etc.) I can't notice any performance difference except for in gaming where the HP absolutely crushes the Asus, though that was to be expected considering the HP has extra GPU cores.

    • Thanks for this. Since I'm only using it for web browsing and watching movies this is good news. For this price plus free case, I'm really happy.

  • Same as LtPhoenix I still haven't received pick-up email notification from HN though they called yesterday to say the colour I ordered (because others I prefered were not available) was out of stock and offered a white one instead which I prefer and accepted. Still waiting to see whether they will come through. Have others picked up their tablets yet?

    • FYI, have now received my ready to pick up email notifications.

      • Just picked mine up as well!

  • looking to get one, any one based in Melbourne CBD wanna sell me one if they got the amex deal with it? PM me please

  • This is a great little tablet; I am really enjoying using it! Thanks again for the post, OP!

  • Bought a pink one for my 4yo daughter and blue one for my 2yo son. In store at HN. Looking to get covers for them - pink for her, blue/ grey/ black for him. Anyone wanting to sell their cover/s ? PM me ? Thanks.

Also - any recommendations for a car mount ?

    • Not sure the screen would be bright enough during the day.

    • Target has Cygnett car mount on clearance for $10 if you can find one.

      • You mean like this one for $49 at Dick Smith ? That would be ideal and a great price. Can I ask how you know / where you saw it. Can't find on Target website.

        http://www.dicksmith.com.au/tablets-accessories/cygnett-carg…

        • Yes. For full size iPad but adjustable so will fit 7" tablets as well. You have to call around like i said was on clearance a while ago.
Edit: yes i bought 3 for $10 each but refunded 1.

  • Loving MY tablet as well, bought a pink one for the wife but she hasn't had much of a go at it yet.

  • The Asus Persona cover http://www.asus.com/Tablet_Mobile_Accessories/Persona_Cover/ more completely covers the edges of the device than the Asus TransCover, which tends to leave large gaps around the edges according to http://www.asus.com/websites/global/products/YNcFgijuf6fomBF… In an "I accidentally dropped it" situation (and in general use in the bag), I would prefer the 'cheaper' Persona cover over the 'premium' TransCover for its more complete covering.

The tablet with the cover on it means it becomes thicker. The included cheap stand is pretty useless at holding the unit up at proper angle with a cover on it (the same would probably apply with the TransCover). Good thing I had a separate phone stand from ebay. The bundled stand was totally unnoticed by me at first (back stand in a black box…) =)

    • Thanks for the pointer. Anyone know where to get at best price? It looks like 2 of these are going to cost me about $80 online now (from the US). Local GG said none left anywhere. Regretting going HN instead of GG - but wanted to get them in the hand rather than risk possible online order issues etc. Oh well … you pays your ticket, you takes your ride.

      • Just an update to say I bought 2 persona covers on ebay for USD23.90 each - less 15% for CBIGSUNDAY promotion. Came to USD40.63 / AUD43.06 for both delivered.

Only had pink (2 left now) and yellow green (1 left now).

        • You can also get the TransCover from Amazon for just under US$36 delivered.

        • Correct. Thanks. I had checked out that option but for me I think the rubbery one is a better option for the pre-schoolers.

  • Got mine, thanks OP.

  • Anyone having wifi issues? I finally picked mine up and it automatically did an update and now no wifi. Seems like a fairly common issue and no real solution according to android forums

    • no issues here. Mine's updated

    • This happened to me also, after reboot it wouldn't show any access points. Just turned off wireless and back on again and fine since

    • Mine shows access points and full wifi strength. Tried rebooting but nothing.

2 minutes later tried rebooting another time and it works. Fingers crossed!

    • Anyone having wifi issues?

thankfully no problems here after update

    • Yep. Mine was disconnecting and giving "authentication problem" messages after the upgrade. Google-foo indicated turning off the power saving function which didn't seem to help and deleting/ "forgetting" the wireless network and creating again - which seems to have solved the problem.

  • Got mine today from The with Asus persona cover. All good. Thanks Op.

  • Enjoying my tablet but the UI pretty laggy compared to my iphone.

    • That's hardly surprising seeing that iphones cost 8x more. :)

      • Yeah true that. I just expected a quad-core android tablet to be as responsive as my old iPhone 5. The memo pad seems to get bogged down. Like when trying to type, it takes several seconds for the keyboard to appear on the memo pad. Can be very frustrating.

  • Can anyone who got one of these confirm if they have Thai language?

    Cheers

    • +1

I don't know Thai but here is a screenshot from the language input settings http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/77509/23780/screenshot_…

      • Thanks 5th from the bottom!!!!

    • Can anyone who got one of these confirm if they have Thai language?

I see that one can 'switch' to Thai.

Can anyone tell me if one can select/add Japanese as well as English, and then switch keyboards in order to input English and/or Japanese (as one can do on iPhones and iPads)? Thanks.

  • You will have to use a third party keyboard from the Playstore. I dont know if they have specifically but they have one that does this for Thai so would be surprised if they didn't have Japanese also.

Yes, it looks like there are several. All cost $, and not sure which are good or if one can switch as one can in iOS.

      • GO Keyboard or Simeji are good free options for Japanese input, it's easy to switch between languages.
