Is this thing any good? It looks good on paper

  • USD is not attractive ATM. $170AU nooo thx ><

    • How do you get $170 AUD? Works out to $153 by my calcs…

      • me so maths so bad. $153 also - still - urgh

    • with code it's $145 aud.

      • Still, I miss those 1:1 days already. So much more work to figure out whether stuff is still a bargain or not now.

  • Is this sale really 32 days? im interested but just not this second.

    • +1

Yup. Should give you plenty of time to decide ;)

  • Does the Android side of it come with the play store?

    • +1

      Yep.

  • I bought one for work. Windows to do work stuff and android for google books/etc when I'm at work not doing work stuff.
Was earlier looking at the galaxy tab 3 lite. For $150 I'll give this a try.

  • -3

    Android x86

    • +5

Both Windows 8.1 and Android 4.4 Kitkat are installed and either can be booted into. It's not Android x86.

      • +1

It is partitioned into Windows and Android separately. Runs Android x86 in the second partition. Boot loader is controlled via key presses apparently during the boot process. It is a very much customised Android x86 with Baytrail support and full driversets enabled just like the current Asus and HP Android tablets range.

        • I understand that. I thought he was referring to the Android x86 project, which is different.

    • Technically it is Android running on an x86 chip. How else would they get Android to work on this architecture? Emulation would probably be inefficient. I am assuming it may be recompiled (but I don't have time to research this).

      • Android has x86 builds which some phones use too. There's some app grievances but they are often fixed.

        • +2

          most importantly. is it stable?

        • @whooah1979:
Yes, but no flash is the biggest downfall… Been running an Asus dual core for agea and they are fine.

        • @wisc: Why is there no flash?

        • @Ebany:

the intel CPUs don't have a flash binary… I've been getting it to work on KitKat, unsure about lollipop… but not on intel CPUs… there are sites which still work better in flash…

  • warranty? no root available yet.

    • Assuming you can access the Android filesystem (probably just another partition) from Windows, should be easy to root.

Edit: if @bchliu is right in his comment above, then you can just mount the Android FS in Windows (probably with ext2fsd) and put a su binary and app on there. Heck, if the bootloader is permissive you might be able to boot directly into a Linux live USB and mount the partition from there.

    • Geekbuying has a warranty/return policy here

      • Yep, read link.
Note 6 months only for return postage. My phone died just after 6 moths. Wasn't worth the $70 cost to return.

        • Is it possible to know what method they advised you to use? Just curious, was thinking about pulling my trigger on Teclast once, but I thought return would be a hassle….

        • @AznMitch: Don't use a courier like TNT, DHL, Startrack etc to send it back. They get hit with import tax and it's not cheap.

        • +2

@Clear: So how can you send it back to China? I know for a fact that Australian Post rejects lithium batteries, so what is the possible option here?
I am simply asking because that I think it is many people's concern (and mine) when it comes to Chinese tablets. They are cheap but not cheap enough for us to say, it's broken, I will throw it out.

        • @AznMitch: I'll have to find that one out for you, but I do know that some other stores on Ozbargain have managed to send Xiaomi Power Banks via Air through Auspost, so maybe they don't declare it?

        • @Clear: What I think they do is they use China Post to get it to Australia and from there, it goes on land (I think). So if I take a tablet to Australian Post, they flat out reject it (on reasonble ground too)

        • @AznMitch: I meant Australian businesses sending it around the country through Auspost. If it's already packaged, does Auspost know?

        • @Clear: They go through special arrangement, special packaging, in accordance to the regulation that this ban is based on. At least from my understanding.

        • @AznMitch:

there is no "special" packaging for li-ion devices via auspost.

        • @AznMitch: Sorry don't remember. Just Aus Post I think. My phone had a removable battery.
Unfortunately the next phone had issues as well, so had to pay for that one to go back as well. Couldn't send the battery. Had to sign a dec there wasn't one there.

I have similar tablet Pipo W2f. Everything is great except it has terrible WiFi range.

If this tablet uses the same Realtek WiFi chipset as Pipo (which I think it is), be prepared not able to use it too far from the wireless router otherwise you will get connection dropouts.

Move close enough to WiFi router like within few meters and connection is good.

    • +1

Perhaps the internal wifi antenna is not soldered properly, this happened to some early Ainol tablets if I remember correctly. How common is the problem with the Pipo?

      • It got 3 signal bars when it dropouts so I don't think it's bad connection issue.

Move closer to router and all problems fixed, I know this because I run continuous pings on command prompt while walking around the house.

        • I have the same tablet (Pipo W2f) and the wifi performs just slightly below my Nexus 7 (2013).

I did have problems initially but found my neighbour was using the same channel, and after switching channels the Pipo was a lot better. The Nexus didn't seem to have the same problem.

Tethering with my Nexus 5 as a hotspot on the weekend I could go about 20m away outside and the Pipo still kept the connection.

      • Whatever happened to Ainol? We used to have them three times a week on Ozb.

        • I think about a hundred other chinese brands suddenly jumped on the bandwagon and I havent really seen much new from Ainol lately, not sure if they are still producing stuff. Can still get some models but they are a bit scarce now it seems so perhaps old stock? http://www.pandawill.com/ainol-novo8-mini-atm7021-dual-core-…

        • +1

@Gravy: Ainol are still around and they still release new tablets. There doesn't seem to be anything too fancy about them and not many stores stock them anymore.

  • +1

how tdo ou go about swtiching between the two?

    • I imagine there is a menu when you boot it up so reboot to switch between the two?

      • Ive been watching a few vids on youtube and on both windows and android you hit a button and it reboots too the other OS

    • Not a 100% sure in re of this model but with a similar specced x98/x89 you just hold down volume down button and a limited GUI menu pops up with the respective Android/Windows icons, whilst not completely relative; http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/teclast-x98-…
will give you an idea of any limitations on the software/back end side of things for the Onda tablet

    • +2

There is a button within Windows and Android that allow you to switch between the 2.

      • a button? so do they run simultaneously as a virtualization? or is this a hard reboot (like bootcamp as opposed to parallels/vmware on mac)

        • An app would be more accurate. It would be hard boot and not virtualisation.

        • @Clear: Thanks clear. I saw a photo showing them run side by side? Is this possible?

        • +2

@turkz1: Not that I'm aware of. The image is to simply show that it's dual OS.

        • @Clear: Cheers.

  • +1

OP does it come with Office 365 as the image suggested? Thanks.

    • +1

According to Onda, it comes preinstalled.

Hi OP. Any chance you could do a deal on the Teclast X98 Air II?

    http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Teclast-X98-Air-II-Dual-OS-In…

    • That looks like a pretty sweet tablet, would love a deal on it.

    • +2

Yep, I've made a comment below with details.

  • +5

Can you please do a deal on Teclast Air x98 II? I've been following the price waiting for it to drop sub $200 USD for a month :(

    http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Teclast-X98-Air-II-Dual-OS-In…

  • +5

    @Jcrew/CodeXD
    Hey, just a heads up;
The coupon - NCNIFDRI will bring the price of the X98 down to $194.99 USD inc shipping, you can use it on that link

    • +2

      194.99 US Dollar equals
      251.02 Australian Dollar

=( I'm not loving the new exchange rate

      • I completely know what you mean,
I'm finding it hard justifying the extra $100 for an extra 2" and increased resolution,
But this will be the first tablet I buy so, I'm not to sure :\

        • Keep in mind if you are mainly getting it for Windows that increased resolution is not necessarily a good thing. Windows is old design and 90% of applications are not made with support for dpi scaling so either everything is really tiny or it comes up normal size but blurry. Window sets you increase the dpi in display settings for everything on your PC but then some things are giant and other applications don't dynamically resize properly and elements get cut off and make them impossible to use.

  • Loving this crop of cheap tabs!
Hoping for something in the 12" range comes soon!

  • +5

Hi OP. Could we please get a deal on one of these:

    Teclast X98 Air 3G (9.7" In-Built GPS / 3G / WiFi)
    http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Teclast-X98-Air-3G-Dual-OS-In…

    Teclast X89 (7.9" 2048x1536)
    http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Teclast-X89-Dual-OS-Android-W…

I've been looking at these tablets - am I correct by saying that for an extra ~15 USD (on geekbuying), if you purchase the "X98 Air 3G" instead of the "X98 Air II" you get in-built GPS and 3G which seems pretty good to me. I can't see any other differences in the hardware from the specifications listed.

OP could you also confirm whether the Teclast X89 has In-Built GPS? I've had a look on the internet and am getting mixed results from my searches of this model.

    • +1

Yeah, the X98 Air 3G comes with in-built GPS and 3G. I've confirmed with Teclast that the X89 does come with GPS.

  • -1

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/183252

Bigger screen and amazing retina display.

    • +1

      Also double the price

    • Comes to almost $300 (~$292) in AUD =( The exchange rate has ruined so many great deals! The tablet is not such a great deal though because it lacks a proper USB port (have to convert the micro usb with a USB OTG adapter) and it has no GPS/3G/HDMI out and you can't use any USB devices while charging the tablet. You are better off with the Teclast X98 3G if you are going to spend out. As linked here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/184215#comment-2589166

This deal on the other hand comes to ~$150.70 AUD which is half the price. Can't really say that something that costs double isn't better because that's obviously going to be the case in anything tech. (unless talking Apple products)

  • +1

    Hi OP,

If you can get a deal for: http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Teclast-X98-Air-3G-Dual-OS-In…

    I will definitely get one.

    Thanks

  • How much free storage is left on this?

    • Yes I would say with it being dual boot a fair bit of the 32GB will be used up. A 64GB would be a better option in this scenario.

  • if you want just Windows OS, you can buy it here for $116.99USD
    http://www.tinydeal.com/onda-v820w-8-windows-81-z3735f-2gb-3…

or this $104USD but never heard of this site. 16GB ROM version

For everyone wondering about the Teclast X98 3G and Air II. I will definitely be able to do a deal on them. I will get back to you all soon.

    • You're a champion.
Will you let us know here or post a new deal? :)
And please whatever you do, consider the exchange rate for us. :D Cheers

      • cant they do a direct conversion between AUD and Chinese Yuan now? didn't think we had to go though USD to get stuff from China any more.

      • +5

I'll let you know here and post a new deal. I'll try and get a good deal with the exchange rate. I'm Australian too and I know how much it hurts ;)

        • How are you associated with them Clear?

        • sweet :D

        • +3

@wisc: Associated with an employee. It's easier for me to post for them due to the language barrier too.

        • +1

Please include deals on the ones with GPS as well!

      • See my comment at the bottom of this deal.

    • Keep me in the loop as well.
      :)

      • See my comment at the bottom of this deal.

  • What a great concept! Best of both worlds. Not sure about the hardware specs though. Screen? Battery life?

  • +2
    • Thanks for posting that, I watched it all the way up to where he says there's no GPS. That's a deal breaker for me. On the upside that's $145 that I won't get nagged about spending.

  • Anyone know a good quad-core android only tablet for about this price? I just want to play games on it, thats the only requirement I really have.

  • Quick question about HDMI. Full port or mini port?

    • +3

      Micro HDMI.

      • Negged you by accident man. Sorry. O.O

        • +1

Click on "votes" under his comment and you can revoke your neg

        • @Agret: Figured it out. Couldn't give him a plus anymore though.. shame

  • +1

There's a thread on xda forum on how to root the Teclast X98 Air 3G version:

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/teclast-x98-…

  • +1

Is it better to pickup this device from AUD DX?

It's a few dollars more, but the shipping should be much faster.

    • edit
I was wrong, on AUD DX it was only Windows version for similar price.
  • any tablets with stylus>?

  • This or the Teclast X80H?

    http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Teclast-X80H-8-Inch-Dual-OS-A…

They looks to be similar specced with Teclast having a slightly larger battery 4400 mAh vs 4200 mAh

Teclast has an OTG cable as part of the package while Onda looks to have a power adaptor included.

I would love to have a dual-boot 7-8 inch tablet with telephony function, however only can find ones closer to 10inch :( any suggestions?

    • The same. 7~8' is the sweet spot.

    • I'd actually prefer something larger.
Something to watch movies in bed, with!

    • Main thing i dislike about the teclast is it only supports 32gb micrsd card while onda is 128gb support.

  • +1

Alright, for those who want a deal on the X98 Air II, have a look at snore's comment here

For the X98 3G I can currently do $207.99 USD.

The difference between the X98 3G and the X98 Air II is that the X98 has inbuilt 3G and GPS.

    • +1

      Thanks OP.

DHL shipping to Australia is USD 5.61 when I add it to the cart - can you make this free for this deal? If so, the USD 207.99 price you quoted then seems pretty good.

For those who are wondering, there is also a X98 Air 3G 64GB version (not currently stocked by Geekbuying). For example:
      http://www.banggood.com/Teclast-X98-Air-3G-Quad-Core-9_7-Inc…

      USD 251.99 less discount code (15BGSF) = USD 236.87.

So for an extra ~USD 30 you can get the newer 64GB version. Note however banggood only have free air parcel shipping to Australia (7-25 business days it says). Also I've read some mixed reviews about banggood from people who have dealt with them.

Does OP know if geekbuying would ever stock the 64GB version?
