  • Tempted but service warranty is an issue for xiaomi, anything happens have to ship it back to the original seller. Maybe for 177 dollars can afford to buy a new phone when one dies……

  • tempted, but 3 week delivery. In which case might as well just buy normal price from a fast shipper

  • Is this upgradeable to lollipop?

    • yes, it comes with lollipop pre-installed.

    • It is lollipop

    • You mean marshmallow?

      • Sorry, yes.

        • Some Xiaomi phones are getting Marshmallow but not RN2. Or they haven't announced it yet.

        • Well… will it get marshmallow then? Because Lollipop is now old.

    • I think marshmallow is what people will be wanting (android 6) which some devices are starting to ship with.

Lollipop is now even on sub $100 phones.

    • Yes, latest ROMs from miui are running Lollipop.

  • Does it support 4G on both sim slots? or just support 4G on 1 slot and the other only 2G?

    • +1

When I had two sims in mine 4G was possible on both sim card, but only one sim can use 4G at a time.

      • Yes I also remember being able to use 4G on both sim card slots, one at a time.

        • No mate, 1 sim for 4g and another for 3g. You cant have both sim on 4g at the same time. You can only see one 4g sign on notification bar for the first sim. If you choose to use data on the second sim then it will become the primary sim. Thus second sim becomes 4g and fist sim turned to 3g. So both slots support 4g but only 1 sim can be on 4g.

        • @HandsomeMonkey:

Are you sure the other turns to 3G not 2G? I am yet to find one dual sim phone that has at least both on 3G. 2G is getting shut down end of this year so I am still hunting for a dual sim phone that can do 4G on one and 3G on the other.

        • @wildstone:

Currently using two Telstra sims. 4g reception is quiet bad when inside the building and I assumed the other sim is 3g. The reception is great with the second sim. BTW I am in Casuarina 0810. I am not sure if its Telstra 2g or 3g. We'll have to see when they shut down 2g at the end of the year.

        • @HandsomeMonkey:

There should be some other way to find out. Is there like an app to tell you what kind of network it is using? Would be interesthing to find out.

        • It doesn't support 700mhz 4G which telstra and opus support, so yes 4G in building will not be as good as some other phones.

  • Was looking to buy this for the parents but hesitated due to bad reviews regarding the battery. Seems like this has been fixed so now wanting to pull the trigger.

There's quite a few sellers out there, all have had a bad review here or there by the sounds of it. Who would you recommend is best to go for to ensure reliable delivery (not fussed about waiting an extra week or two) and ease of dealing with if there are any issues? Everbuying, gearbest, dealmachine, vickmall or eglobal?

    • The whirlpool thread has good feedback for vickmall. Have a search through their massive note 2 thread: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2444001

    • eglobal has been ok for me in the past. I did have to send something back once and it cost ~$40, and they weren't very proactive at getting it fixed and returned - but they did eventually. I guess I'd trust them more than others.

Comparing to the Meizu m2 note (which I've ordered for $158 AUD), how good is the multitasking on the Redmi Note 2? I've looked everywhere but can only find this video as a comparison, and the Meizu wins, with RN2 having to reload the app:

    https://youtu.be/n63UB12E-QY?t=173

Questions for people who have the RN2:

    What's the battery life like?
Is the multitasking as bad as in the video above?
How's the glass/screen's quality? (Meizu has gorilla glass equivalent but RN2 doesn't)

Pretty much the multitasking is pretty important consideration atm. Thanks in advance.

    • Here is a thorough comparison from xda:

I have a feeling that cm12.1 on the redmi note 2 would really take it above the m2 note due to the low amount of bloat and near stock os. However, cm12/13 misses out on some features like the IR blaster and dual sim auto off.

      • +1

Thanks for the link; not really answered any of my questions though unfortunately.

I'm just worried about the multitasking being like in the video I linked above, and also the battery life being poor. I would assume running cm would fix these?

    • Wee'd you get the meizu m2 note for that price?

      • JD.com A deal just recently with the new year sales:
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/227875

I've cancelled the order though, because I think it'd be better to get the Redmi Note 2, and safer to get it from eglobal or dealmachine.

  • +1

i just hopped onto JD.COM, and this phone seems to be going at RMB799…, a newbie question: that is the difference between "电信版“ and "移动版“? i am always fearful if i buy one of this phone in China and only to find out the bandwiths are configured differently between the 2…
    Cheers.

    • As discussed above, the hardware is the same, just flash the latest Global ROM on it.

    • the China rom is software locked on the bands for legal or whatever reasons they have in China, the global roms opens all of them except band 28 which is one of Optus 4G bands iirc

      • So Telstra 4GX on 700Mhz also enabled?

        • GSM:

          900, 1800, 1900 MHz

          UMTS:

          850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz

          FDD LTE:

          1800 (band 3), 2100 (band 1), 2600 (band 7) MHz

          TDD LTE:

          1900 (band 39), 2300 (band 40), 2500 (band 41), 2600 (band 38) MHz

        • +1

Telsta 4GX and Optus low band 4G (700Mhz) is both the same LTE band 28. This phone doesn't support it. I used it for about 2 months. Got decent coverage on Optus. 4G signal was a bit weak around Melbourne but even my current phone that supports Band 28 hasn't given me better coverage, so I guess it is decent.

        • @Makoto:

          Thanks.

      • At this price I think I could make the compromise. I wouldn't buy a $300+ phone without band 28.

  • +2

damn cheap for a decent phone.

  • +4

I bought this phone ages ago for $230 and it lasted about 6 months before the speaker stopped working and it wouldn't ring….. I bought a replacement speaker part and installed it but it didn't fix the issue so I think it must be a problem elsewhere within the phone…. It's now at home in a drawer, practically usless.

    • redmi line is very budget oriented im not surpeised. mi 4 or mi 4c is more flagship range and better components

    • +3

well normal people would send it for warranty instead of opening it up and frigging it trying to do it yourself

      • You would need to pay the shipping back to China.

    • +1

Mine died a day into the purchase.

    • +1

Stories like this make me hesitant to buy a "china phone" with no local warranty. The risk of malfunction is certainly there and it is usually not worth the hassle and expense of sending it back to supplier.
It's a lot of phone for the money but if something goes wrong you're on your own.

      • +1

If you're someone that goes for top-end flagship smartphones, I find that your comment is very much irrelevant. Depending on what flagship you're after, you could buy at least 2.5x of these for the same price as a flagship. That means you'd have to change this phone about once every 9-10 months to be "equal" with a flagship user. Part of the logic behind buying a phone of this price though is that even if it's crappy, you haven't "wasted" that much.

I guess your alternatives (if you care so much about warranty) would be a local phone of a similar price, but I am fairly certain you won't find anything that is such good value here.

        • +1

Hmmm. I'd definitely prefer stability and longevity over a "whiz bang" lighting fast phone that might be dead or malfunctioning in 6-12 months. I've been using my HTC8X for 3 years now, it's stuck on WP8 and is getting a little dated but it's still an excellent phone and I'm familiar with it. So no, I'm not a cutting edge kind of guy but more of a techno laggard.

        • @wolfenator87: Fair enough - then I think your comment is valid and certainly applies to you. I don't mean to say this one is a blazingly fast phone, just that it definitely punches above its weight for its price tag.

Having said that though, I don't get the feeling that the more familiar brand of phones are any more stable/better. They are equally likely to break after 9-10 months. I personally experienced problems with all my Samsungs within a year. Not problems that would render it unusable, but problems that most people (myself included) would not expect if you're paying top dollar for a phone, or rather, using a phone from such a reputable brand. I think this was one of the main reasons why I had no real hesitation in going with the biggest Chinese branded phone. I feel they are equally likely to break.

    • Buy a smart watch and then it does this need to ring anymore

  • +1

    Pretty good deal imho

  • +2

I have a 64gb sd card in mine (just format it in a pc or another phone that supports 64gb as phone wont recognise it or format it) then place in Redmi Note 2 and works perfect

    (officially only supports upto 32gb)

  • Is there any rom with a marshmallow (6.0) build for this phone? I had a look and could only see lollipop builds.

    • +2

its in testing now released shortly, one thing Xiaomi does is constant decent updates.

      • Thanks

  • Question about MIUI.. can you place a widget on the home screen? From what I've seen there is no app drawer button, because the app drawer IS the home screen, like on iOS devices. I've never liked the iOS UI for this reason, because if I want that experience I can just go to the app drawer and stay there. I want fully customizable home screens with widgets in them.

i damn hope this isnt a pricing mistake, i bought a really good priced phone from these guys before and it turns out it was a pricing mistake and they refunded me in full so good luck to those taking a shot.

  • +2

A happy user for two months and then one day the audio was suddenly out. Phone calls, musics, speaker and even head phone stopped working at all. Microphone works OK and blue tooth audio still works and that's it.

Beware of these quality issue, might be rare but I never heard it happened to other mobiles. Maybe just my bad luck, but both mobile phones purchased from JD.com went to an end in two or three months. Meizu M2 note can not start nor be charged, and Redmi note 2 went mute. Will never buy anything from JD again, customer service and dispute are close to nil.

you have warranty still on both handsets

iphone sound broken : About 77,100,000 results (0.47 seconds)
samsung: About 1,820,000 results (0.43 seconds)

happens to every manufacturer, but you can claim under warranty and they will repair or replace it.

You just have to send it back to china or wherever they tell you, which most people wont because of the price to send it back

      • +3

iphone stuck up anus: About 56,500 results (0.34 seconds)

Lets not get too worked up over google result numbers

you seem to have a particular liking to this brand? Why mention Samsung or Apple? They are in different leagues…

    • Don't blame JD, blame poor workmanship/quality control from the manufacturer. Sorry to hear about this.

Awsome phone for this price…. just load ROM…. DONT do any banking ect until you do this.

  • The price is USD$151.99. Has the extra-special price ended?

    • It's showing USD 118 (special price) for me, on the extreme right of this page

  • is this site trustworthy? Never bought from them before and what is expected shipping time?

    Thanks

    • It's on their shipping info page:

To other countries it may take 15 to 25 business days.

      • -1

Check the 'Payment methods' tab under the product - it states 5-11 business days to Aus.

  • i have one myself, paid $219 on ebay two months ago. great for reading with a large screen. also liked dual sim & dual standby feature

  • Hi guys,
I am about to purchase these spec phone. I just can not decide between this phone and Letv 1s?
Any comment or suggestion please? Thanks

    • +1

From what little research I did, the main issue will be one of the OS. Letv is the netflix of china, and thus a lot of the OS is geared toward Letv streaming. You'll have to see what kinda support there is for a more global rom, Letv or otherwise.

  • How often do you get updates on this?

    • +2

      every week or two

      • What kind of updates are these?

If it's related to their bloatware, might as well turn them off.

    • +3

If you use a xiaomi.eu ROM (Global development) then it's every Friday.

If you use a en.miui.com ROM (Global stable) then it's every second Friday.

      • Is it on marshmallow yet?

        • +2

No, latest is 5.1 I believe.

  • This is a great deal. I bought the phone 3 weeks ago on eBay for $259.

  • can someone advise this phone's SAR value?

  • Does google App Store come pre installed on the global miui7?
Read some places saying this has to be installed separately?
    Ta.

    • -1

      Yes to latter.

    • +1

Google App store comes pre installed on Global MIUI7 ROM.

      • Cool. Thanks.

  • Anyone know if the cheapest postage option (flat) is registered or tracked? Thanks.

    • Yes it is tracked.

      • Thanks.

  • +2

I have this phone, so far I love it. However I would suggest sticking with the Global stable ROM over the developer ROM. Since the latest update I've had lots of issues with WIFI, now just wondering if I wait out another 2 weeks for the next dev ROM or roll back to the stable ROM

    • I'm on the xiaomi.eu 26/11/15 weekly dev release, works very well for me. Only 2 issues I've found: After a number of days bluetooth sometimes stops working (reboot phone fixes it), screen auto brightness is slow to respond (may take up to 30s or so) but I'm getting used to it. I'm thinking of trying the latest 7.1 global stable to see if these issues are resolved but haven't yet.

Otherwise, I think this phone is fantastic value for money, loving it so far.

  • Anyone know how the front/back camera is relative to newer ipads?

  • +1

Would this be a good phone for seniors? Simple? No Chinese etc.?

    • Yes, once you install Global stable ROM.

    • +2

I'm not a senior (not yet anyway) but happy to share my two day old experience with the Redmi Note 2 Prime (which has a slightly faster processor and double the memory)

Coming from IOS 9.2 and Windows Phone 8.1, I found MIUI easy to use (it is very IOS-like).

The most technically intense things I had to so far are: install the latest stable Global ROM (just download off PC, transfer to phone using USB, run an app - easy), set another country as the LOCALE (Australia is not available), tweak/improve the camera settings and set up/enable backups (to MIUI Cloud etc.).

In return I am enjoying (obviously subjective and for my specific use cases): no lag, great standby battery life, dual SIM, reasonable SOT, beautiful large screen, and decent camera.

The Global ROM supports English. 99.99% Chinese free so far in my experience, except for a bit of Chinese text on one menu item (which is most definitely a localization bug)

      • thank you for your review!
