Macquarie Hhonors Platinum Visa Credit Card - Free Night after $2000 Spend (No Annual Fee)

270

Just received this in my emails. The Macquarie HHonors Platinum Visa with a $0 annual fee.

The wording states "That's an annual saving of $295." which leads me to believe it's for life.

The terms do mention "Primary or additional cardholder annual fees may be introduced or varied in future." which means they could change it, but the current offer looks to be pretty good.

You also receive a free weekend night after a $2000 spend on the card and also automatic HHonors Gold Status. This is a platinum card so includes all your standard travel insurance and what not.

I realise HHonors isn't a great rewards program, but for $0 annual fee, having a spare Platinum card with insurances can't hurt.

I don't think this is targeted, though I am HHonors Diamond so there's a chance it was, but I highly doubt it.

EDIT: Keep in mind this isn't a good card to use as a daily card for rewards, for example 10,000 HHonors points = 1,500 Velocity points (yes, you read that right).

  • God dammit and to think I just got rejected for this card. That sucks!

    • i get rejected by COLES mastercard that's even worth

Fair enough :) I swear I don't know how these credit company assess whether you're eligible for a credit card or not.

        • That's the whole point. Legally they cannot disclose their lending criteria.

  • Just closed my card last night, do you think i can take this offer? i cant find anywhere in T&C not applicable for previous card holder 12 months.

  • Interesting.

And according to the fine print, it's $12k/year spend in subsequent years to get the free night (if I'm reading it correctly), which isn't great.

But agree that it wouldn't hurt to have a free for life platinum card that earns some sort of rewards (albeit at an atrocious rate) plus has insurance.

if you do need to spend 12k to get a "free night", it does hurt to have this card. first of all, platinum is new silver, nothing special! secondly, if you spend 12k on other good credit cards, chance is you can get way more rewarding points. in my case, i use citi's signature as my main card, other cards i use depending on the situations include a black card, a coles mastercard (it is a "platinum" card "plus has insurance" with "no annual fee for life"), an amex, etc.

      • Where this would benefit from the free nights is if you book it during peak season and at a popular destination e.g New York during NYE this year.

        • the weekend night is only standard room
if your hotel has that room available during NYE then you can redeem your reward

        • @ishe:
Last I checked one of the standard room was $300 on NYE

        • "during peak season", "at a popular destination", "e.g New York", "during NYE this year"…..

          any more assumptions/conditions?

      • Yea I agree, but you're missing my point.

It doesn't hurt to have this card. I'm certainly not saying you should spend $12k on this card instead of another card just to get the free night.

If I were to have this card, I would just keep it in my drawer and only take it out if I wanted to buy something that I wanted insurance on. For rewards points, I'd definitely use another card.

  • Thanks.

  • Anyone current holders going to try to take advantage of this?

  • Anyone rang Macquarie to confirm there is no annual fee for life?

    • You might just want to take a screenshot of their T&C in case they change it

    • anyone stops you from ringing macquarie to confirm?

      • +1

Someone rang over at AFF and it's not free for life.

  • HHonors isn't a great rewards program

How does it compare to the Coles no annual fee mastercard? I figure that 1 Flybuys point per $2 is equal to about 0.25% cashback.

  • What is appealing about this is the travel insurance for you, your spouse and any dependent children if they travel with you for the entire journey. I know that my AMEX only covers me and I still have to cover the rest of my family separately.

  • I'll apply if they offer their Qantas card free fee for life.

  • There was another deal last month where you could earn 2 night certificates for the first year $99 fee. Shame that isn't available with the fee free for the first year.

Also according to a post over on AFF this isn't fee free for life-

"I just rang Macquarie and spoke to the Account Management Team. I am informed that the card is not free for life but first year only."

Would rather the 2 night certificates as they are more valuable to me for an aspirational stay like staying at the Conrad Rangali in a Water Villa.

  • ref the t/c "^ Offer is limited to new applicants only. Primary or additional cardholder annual fees may be introduced or varied in future." so it is free but they may change it in the following years? can you earn points paying the ato using this card?

  • +1

i called up and they said you will get charged an annual the following year and theres no points for ato payments. can anyone who has applied for this offer confirm whats printed on the letter of offer regarding the annual fee?

    • You're the second person to report and no one has confirmed that it is free for life. OP, maybe amend the wording?

      • +1

I rang them and they looked up my offer. They confirmed that my card was no annual fee for life. That was only verbal though, but I believe my phone call was recorded.

        • -1

          This is immensely confusing..

  • whats on the the letter of offer regarding the annual fee? thats whats important to dispute later on as proof.

  • got email offer today so i called up and quoted email and was told its no annual fee for life but subject to change. i asked about minimum income required and credit limit as website states 30k but they said its 50k and min $6000 limit. has anyone used this card to pay ato bills and have you earned points or does it count towards the $2000k or 12k spent to qualify for the free hotel voucher every year?

  • Commonwealth bank suckered me and did not pay the bonus $150 after delaying their side of the processing.

Hope to get on this one.

  • ive had no problems with other banks but they rejected me even after review and wont say why only to tell be to reapply in 6 months. maybe i needed to increase my living expenses over $1500 per month or decrease or increased my other credit card limits below or above 10k might of helped?

    • Did you just hear back today? I've had to supply them with pay slips and invoices on 3 occasions last week but still am yet to hear anything this week.

    • Similar with my application. Got rejected without knowing why. Not sure their requirement.

  • applied a few days ago didnt hear anything so i called up and quoted ref no they said a letter was posted and on the way so asked about it contents and they said it was declined. they dont seem to have automatic approval just denial, i dont recommend applying if you have made recent card applications
