+ve for the effort, but the $395 fee is too high for me :<

    • +3

yeah also $5000 min spend :S - just noticed

      • +3

Yeah, this card is for ballers lol.

        • Is not that much if you have a couple of friends who is willing to let you pay their bills.

        • +2

          @nightelves:
Yeah I've done that already with other cards.

I don't have many friends lol.

        • @meetspin:

Work colleagues? Prepaid bills and utilities?

        • +2

          @nightelves:
Nah I'm like Nigel Nofriends lol.

Nah the $5000 spend is fine, but the annual fee is a bit much.

        • +7

@nightelves: friends who are willing to "let you pay their bills" - no shortage of those. just need friends who PAY YOU BACK :) don't suppose you have a spell to cast for that?…

        • @justin_tsoi:

Yeah true that can be a real pain.

      • +1

Min spend in 90 days also

  • I've had this card for a while and didn't realize there were lounge passes. How do we get/redeem them?

I hope they're more enticing than the ANZ Rewards Black lounges - they're very average, but free is free :)

      • Priority Pass sucks from my experience. ANZ rewards seems better option. I guess it depends on which country and lounge. Priority Pass gives you only 2 free pass per year whilst ANZ's one unlimited.

More info from Westpac here: https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/man…

You sign up with PriorityPass and scan the card (wait for a physical one in the post, or straight away with their app) when you enter the lounge - 2 visits free for the Altitude Black cardholder.

    • If you have the Qantas card you need to first spend on QF before they send them out

      • thanks and a very important point to note.

    • Out of curiosity, do you pay the annual fee or are they happy to waive it for you?

      • +1

They originally offered the card to me for free (I bank with them).
Then when the when the next annual fee was due, I called looking to close it as I prefer AMEX issued AMEX cards, and they offered to waive it.
Will keep it til they don't decide to waive the fee.

PS Thanks for the replies in regards to the PP.

    • Thanks will update :)

  • Do you get SPG Gold status with this card?
Also how does it convert to Asia Mile points? This is what I am interested in as Cathay is part of oneworld alliance and you can use AM points to book Qantas and a few other flights with significant discount.

    • Yes, but only after one stay to "activate" it.

Can't remember the redemption rates (on mobile so hard to look up) but they recently devalued, so I think it's 1.75:1 or something now (don't quote me)

  • +9

Comparison with ANZ Frequent Flyer Black:

    100K miles vs 75K
    Min spend $5000 vs $2500
    annual fee $395 vs $0

Not to mention the AMEX Explorer card with 75K KrisFlyer miles which are rated higher than Qantas miles.

So, good try dear Westpac, but no, unless you wave annual fee )

    • +1

How did you get 0 annual fee on ANZ FF Black?

      • It used to be free for everyone several months ago, now as far as I aware it is free for existing customers only. Well, it is not completely free, just the first year waved, but it is more than enough.

      • +1

Breakfree package covers it too if you already have that

    • +1

25k points is quite a bit - but you're right, not worth a $400 premium.

  • I thought normally the give free first annual fee for their customer.

  • Don't forget you don't have to use it on FF points… they have altitude rewards which the 100K in free points would be about $500 in gift cards. Points also don't expire. If you can manage to get the card free for a year, then that is a free $500! Just cancel the card before the annual fee becomes due for the 2nd year.

  • For existing Westpac customers, you can get 50,000 points and no annual fee for the first year https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/rew…

    • Guess you can just open a savings account with them to qualify?

Now once that's sorted out, we still have 75k points vs 50k points when compared to ANZ.

      • presume so, you just need to apply after logging into their online banking.

    • i havent even gotten the points yet from the last deal

  • Just went into a branch, they had no clue about this promotion. I told them it started yesterday - 'must be an online only thing' they said. They can do 50K points with no annual fee the first year, 100K points would come with the $395 fee. Previous years Westpac did honour online offers in branch and waived the first year fee if I remember correctly.

    • I was about to ask if anyone have had luck getting the annual fee waived applying in branch. I might give it a couple of weeks for awareness and try my luck then.

      • This a special offer only available through the link on Point Hacks (see the comments there), you're not going to be able to apply in branch.

  • Interesting. Will keep an eye on this. The Amex earn rate is pretty good.

  • They recently devalued the FF conversion rate, so it's not as good value as before if you're in it for redeeming flights…

Also pretty sure you only get 1 Priority Pass with 2 visits with this card, not 2 cards and 4 visits as the OP states (source: I have this card)

You can get the annual fee waived if you package a loan with them.

    • +1

The extra 2 passes is for Sydney Amex Lounge which you just need to scan your amex card. I think …

      • Ah yes, there's that.

  • need some good velocity rewards cards man…>>!!

  • Based on Qantas $100 Myers card @ 15K points, 100K points equates to $660.
If based on Qantas "1 million points" comp @ 2.28c each, then 100K is worth $2,280 - but this wouldn't be a good measure as it's not tangible.

So @$395 annual fee pegged against the gift cards, you're getting $265 free value.

Edit: Based on Qantas' Top-up points system, points are worth 2.8c. So to buy 100K on their platform it would cost $2,800. There you have it. $395 vs $2,800 if you want to "buy" 100K directly.
P.s. On that platform $400 buys you top-up of 12,500 points only.

100K points on the QFF black market is worth about $1000 .. typically less in QFF booking value especially with today's depressed air travel market. Then when the ticket prices go up (schoool hols, high season etc) you can't find a QFF seat!! QFF Catch 22???

  • The monthly points cap is way too low for me to consider this card: "For each statement cycle a points cap of 5,000 Altitude Points or 2,500 Qantas Points applies when using either or both cards."

You could only spend $1667/month on the Amex before the cap would cut in…

  • Any promotion for existing Westpac Altitude Black card holder?

none if you apple for the 50k point promotion

however terms don't state you cant apply for another one for the 100k special. however you need to spend 5k and $395 annual fee.

    • I've had this card for 3 years running now.

First applied in January 2014. Cancelled in December 2014, reapplied in January 2015 and got the bonus points. Did the same again in December 2015 and January 2016 and again got the bonus points. Only problem was i had to pay the annual fee, but reduced to $295. With the Priority Pass access (USD$27 x 2 and 100000 signup bonus points i felt it was worthwhile).

      Maybe something you could consider.

      • This should be fine so long as you have a good credit rating, but each time you apply for the card it'll reduce your credit score a tiny fraction. It's probably not much in the grand scheme of things, but still something to be mindful of (especially if you're borderline, or trying to apply for a loan, etc.)

      • And how did it affect the credit score at all?

        • Have never been rejected for a card, loan or LOC. So not sure if it's effect.
