  • whats with the "S" at the end of KD43X8000DS ?

is this model now HDR10 with a firmware update?

    • +9

Fairly certain 99% of Ozbargainers have TV's so I am sure someone will find this handy.

    • -4

same, only use a laptop and an Ipad most of time.

      • I book my laptop up to the TV for movies.

      • +6

You came here just to tell us you use your laptop and ipad most of the time? Cool story, bro!

      • What else is on your blog?

  • +1

Thinking of KD43X8000DS as computer monitor, will be used for non competitive gaming, will it be suitable…. off to whirlpool to check

    • Not sure how the modern ones go, but my 5 year old sony KDL…whatever has serious input lag. Anyone can comment if the newer models are better?

    • +2

Works great as a gaming monitor, I use ps4 controller to play my games on it and the input lag is not noticeable even with games like battlefield 1

      • +1

That's nice to know, thank you mate… Still in the process of researching the right components for my man cave and this would suit perfectly as I can hook up my PS4 and run an optical out from the TV as well

        • +2

I'm currently using it as a monitor and have been for over a month. Connected to my nVidia GTX 1070, Foxtel and Optus Mini (all via HDMI). Make sure you have a videocard that supports HDMI 2.0, as that is required to run the TV @ 4K @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4

If you have an older videocard that does not have HDMI 2.0 support, then you'll be restricted to 30Hz @ 4K

4K Gaming is very demanding though. My GTX 1070 struggles with most AAA titles to run at 60FPS, most of them dip below that.

Oh and HDMI 2 & 3 on the TV I believe support HDMI 2.0 (so make sure you connect the PC to one of those two, just double check yourself if it's actually 2 & 3, I think it was). Most HDMI cables that have come out in the last few years will be fine to use, what's important is you connect the PC to the right port on the TV, and to a videocard that supports HDMI 2.0

Great TV, if you want, I can share my settings with you. And get the 43" version; the 49" even though is an IPS Panel and has better viewing angles, the blacks are not as deep as they are on the 43" TV, which uses a VA Panel. Especially if you're sitting directly in front of it and using it as a monitor, I would say it's better than the 49". The TV does not have micro dimming, which is only available in the really expensive models, so you want the blacks to be deep enough for you to not notice them being grayish.

        • @POL1T1CS: thank u for the detailed post mate , I'm yet to build my PC, waiting for reviews on AMD Vega and ryzen .. well written reply , cheers

        • +1

          @kamban:

I recommend you go with both. Stay away from the GTX 1070 & 1080. nVidia are yet to fix several issues with regards to drivers when it comes to Pascal. We have been waiting for a long time and no fix, we're hoping that after the GTX 1080 Ti comes out in 6 days they might fix the issues with pascal or focus on them.

As for Ryzen, wait for the reviews in a few days, but from the leaks, it looks like the best price/performance option out there in all 3 categories.

        • @POL1T1CS: Cool mate , I was thinking of the $460 one where we can overclock ourselves and pair it up with the Vega to there is a good pairing up between the both

Fingers crossed they review and work well

        • @kamban:

If you don't overclock you'll be very happy with the reviews when they come out for Ryzen. But if you are an overclocker, there are little fears right now that these chips don't overclock well. At their price point they are great, but you still need to wait for motherboard prices to decrease or at least for mid-range and lower-range motherboards to get released. I think right now all that's available is high end motherboards. If you're waiting a few months, you can even wait on the TV too probably. Christmas time they dropped it to this price and I bought it, didn't think they'd drop it this low again so soon, but in a few months they might drop their prices even cheaper as the new models will likely be coming out.

        • +1

@POL1T1CS: Cheers mate, I think I can manage with the PS4 and the old 40 incher for a few more months and snag this TV with the PC .. I'm interested in the TV due to the VA panel which generally has good blacks and good response time ( low viewing angle , but doesn't matter to me )

        • @POL1T1CS:

I bought a 43" monitor cause my primary use is monitor and then gaming/tv but it turned out to be a dud .. has burn in issues.

Im looking to get this but would you recommend it for someone whose primary use is monitor ? Is the display that good? For a a graphic designer?

          Thanks

    • +1

      http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x800d

Input lag good, colour gamut good, sound is bad (but who cares for a monitor). Does 4k @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4 (which you need)

      • What is 4:4:4?

        • Colour and intensity information both at 4K resolution.

Lesser numbers (eg 4:2:0) mean the colours and brightness are sampled at different frequencies, and from a practical standpoint mean text rendering suffers. The above site demonstrates it quite well on one of its pages.

      • Thanks mate that instills more confidence

      • Sound bad? I got this tv and compared to a lot of other Tvs it's pretty damn good. Not the loudest but it's not a sound system either

  • +1

Still not sure whether to upgrade from our 32inch Sony TV. I have had it for almost 10 years and has never let me down.
I have the feeling a bunch of new tvs are about to hit the market?

    • My Sony no longer recieves HD TV because it lacks a MPEG4 decoder :-(.

      • +2

Grab a set top box from Gumtree.

    • I upgraded last year from a 32" Sony to the 55" X8500C — worth every dollar, having a big screen with good colour is so much better for watching 1080p content and playing games. I'd say take the plunge.

    • Not trying to persuade you but these are some damn good TV's, whichever way you go.

  • how good would the 43x8000 be for a current PS4 (and maybe PRO in the future?)

is the TV capable of upscalling to 4k from my standard PS4?

    • +1

current ps4 won't make much of a difference even with upscale

you need the pro to make it worthwile

      • Current ps4 supports HDR though, as does this TV

      • Exactly, who doesn't need a bigger screen in a mancave!

    • +1

I got the 43" X8000D in the EB Games promotion a few months ago (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/271574)
Great value TV - truly amazing with the PS4 pro :)
If you plan on sticking with the standard PS4 for years to come, I wouldn't say this is a vital purchase.
Unless of course you use your TV for other purposes, then this a very good future proof TV imo

  • +2

Sony software still laggy and slow? my previous bravia, browsing through the menu and other functions are super slow

    • Nope very fast, uses android

      • +1

        my 43 is slow

        • +1

and my KD65X8500D is also slow and laggy. I'm personally not a fan of the android OS at all.

        • +3

          @Evil-Elmo:

it's not because of the Android OS, its because Sony chose to use a shit Mediatek processor that only scores 22,000 odd in Antutu. Even my Nexus Player is faster than that.

And think of how abhorrent this is, considering their higher end Z9D TV also uses the same processor. Personally, the TV struggles to play 60fps YouTube videos smoothly while the Nexus Player does not.

Nexus Player also does not lag while scrolling through the menus either. It;s the one downside about this Sony TV's

        • +1

          @adrianhughes1998:

Yeah, you're right. My bad… I should have said, I'm personally not a fan of the android OS as implemented on the Sony TVs (at least my model)!

        • @Evil-Elmo: let's go run a car thru the HQ of Sony.

        • Update the firmware u toad

        • @adrianhughes1998: what u expect they would put an i7 in it lol

        • @Gavman: you don't seem to know much about mobile processors. Firmware has nothing to do with it.

And for reference the CPU and GPU are weaker than something you'd pay for in a cheap $100 android phone from the shops here in Oz.

So you tell me, have a 4K TV that can barely keep the 4K going at times especially with high bitrate files. And an interface that due to the processor is laggy. You call that reasonable ?

        • duno bout ur tv but my tv performs well after firmware update… mb urs is a dud

        • @Gavman: I find that hard to believe. So you're saying you have the same model .And your saying you watch 4K content and 60fps 720p or above video?

        • @Gavman: and considering most people on here have said the same thing that it's laggy, it's not just me being pedantic about frame rate drops and this and that. If you actually came through with a technical or sensical point, I would have respect.

But I have zero respect considering the lack of knowledge you have on the matter.

        • @adrianhughes1998:

I watch 4k 60fps 0 lag, happy to post a video of it to youtube to prove you wrong too

          I have the 43"

If you are referring to 4k high bitrate over usb then the lag is probably the usb stick. I can run 30MBPS HDR sample videos with 0 lag

If you are referring to wifi then it is obvious you don't know much about REAL world wifi transfer speeds.

        • @neosin: well we can both upload videos then. i have seen the processor in reviews and its not the best.

And no, i am running Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0 so yes i know my USB sticks and random/sequential read and write speeds. Yes, it runs 30MBps sample videos but that's a low-ish bitrate, i run movies usually in the 50-60MBps range. Try one of the LG sample videos at 80Mbps and then it'll be stut - stut- stuttering.

As for Wifi, it has AC and i know yes it doesn't even run at its full potential speed no Wifi does, with Youtube's encoding its optimised better etc.

        • @adrianhughes1998:

I can run every single HDR video on this page with 0 stutter

          http://demo-uhd3d.com/

I just checked and the highest is around 70MBps such as this one http://demo-uhd3d.com/fiche.php?cat=uhd&id=151

I will upload a clip showing you how smooth it is

        • @adrianhughes1998:

btw I'd like to know where you are downloading 4k 50-60MBps content besides demos?

        • @neosin: alright fair go then

        • @neosin: home movies from 4k camrera.

        • @adrianhughes1998:

67 MBps Samsung HDR - Chasing the Light 0 stutter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48V6PFxSiHs

another HDR high bitrate demo with 0 stutter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGmPGTPbXf0

          fast menu https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fbaigCbsKk

Mind you this is recorded on iphone 6 so quality is crap but you can clearly see 0 stutter

        • @neosin: mines slow when I turn it on and try to go straight to HDMI2. The input selection menu takes ages to come up and then sometimes isn't responsive. Do you get that?
Your video shows fast performance just navigating the home screen but I think the TV is slow going between TV, home screen, apps and HDMI inputs

I haven't noticed any stuttering on content.

        • @David Warners Mo:

If it is a cold start i.e tv rebooting then yes there is some lag

You shouldn't need to switch to hdmi2 everytime as mine remembers and boots straight to whatever hdmi i was last on.

Sony is such a cheap brand now days, used to be most expensive brand, now leading by Samsung. Iv been Loong at to for last 5years and never bought one since i will probably never even use it. Just walk into watch TV outside your next door neighbour for free, saves electricity, that's a true ozbaraginer.

    • +1

I think one simply can't go wrong with Sony….at this price it presents a great bang for buck imho.

    • +4

Iv been Loong at to for last 5years

That's easy for you to say.

    • +1

LoL I guarantee this guy hasn't seen one of these tvs in action with proper 4k and HDR content

      • +2

To be fair, 90% of people still haven't.

    • +1

What did I just read? As a samsung tv owner, I can say theyre not super amazing. However, I was impressed by an LG TV I used recently (except for the dead pixel).

    • -1

You are 100% right; the game changed when they stopped manufacturing in Japan.

  • +3

Also works with the $100 off voucher from here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/290481 if you were able to get one.

  • Some of these are same price as JB.

    • That's what the description says :)

      • Oops, so it does, I missed that. BTW, thanks for finding/creating all these incredible bargains you come up with. Don't suppose you find a Pixel xl for around $500 could you?😉

  • So happy i waited to buy the 43x8000d nearly brought it for $999 this morning. Too bad my $100 code has not come through yet. Thanks for the post.

  • Does the KD43X8000DS work with the Xbox One S?

    • yes sir, u need to enable Enhanced HDMI thru the TV itself to get proper HDR10 though

  • I wonder how the KD55X7000D compares to the Hisense 55M7000UWG anyone? I can get the Hisense for $1,135so almost identical in price

    • +1

      Hisense

      • Thanks :)

    • +2

After comparing both in store, I went with the Hisense.

      • Thanks, I appreciate the feedback

  • -1

Does anyone have the $100 code to share? :D

  • +1

the 43x8000 is a ripper of a TV, after some moderate calibration, its bang on with great colour and some decent motion for sports.
sound isnt the best, so a small bluetooth speaker can fix that.

    • How did you fix the motion? I get a very decent picture when there's no movement.

      • I set the motionflow options:

        Motionflow settings
        Smoothness max
        Clearness 1

Doesn't seem to alter the brightness too much, but improves the motion.

  • I don't have my 100 voucher despite completed survey but I actually ditched my cheapo panel and got another cheapo panel at bargain shop but I'd like to get a better panel

    • I have the UH770T which I would say it is similar to this TV less Dolby Vision. I have had it for about 3 months with no issues thus far and the resolution is great. It is not as bright as the Samsung SHD TV (KS8000) due it being an IPS screen however the negs will be as it has DSE (please google it - Not Dick Smith btw lol)

Another note is that if you use this as a Monitor that is it doesn't support full 10-Bit colour bandwidth; 3840 x 2160 @ 60 Hz (it does @ 30Hz 4:4:4). It is only 8-Bit colour at that res. Also to mention as I believe that it is 10-Bit (8-Bit native + 2-Bit dithering) HDR. The 55UH9x series support native 10-Bit.

      Cheers

      • Thanks a ton mate. The TV has a pretty bad review on rtings as well. Going to let this go.

        • +1

          You're welcome.

Please note that you are going to find negs on every TV throughout the research process.
It really depends what you are going to use if for, Gaming, Watching movies, TV etc.

I purchased it due to Gaming as it supports PC & XB1S HDR.
That was the best TV for the money.

The king of the hill is the OLED, however as you know you have to fork out nearly $3K for a 55" that comes with a paltry 1 year warranty.

          Cheers

        • @vinni9284: This will be used for general watching Netflix, youtube, freeview and sometimes gaming. Rtings review said it had poor contrast and I cannot go past poor contrast. I am also after an OLED but LG has a veritable monoply and hence wont bring the prices down as much.

Wouldnt our consumer laws make sure that the warranty would be atleast 2 years as opposed to one?

        • @dealsucker:

I would recommend the Samsung SUHD TV if you want picture clarity and all of the functions. The KS8000 was very popular late last year around Boxing day week (pre and post) as it was going for $1495 for a 55" (RRP $2495). So any model above the 8000 series will be good TV as I believe that these units have now been super-seeded. I am not sure what will be its replacement at this stage.

The Samsung in my view had a better picture clarity than the LG and the contrast was way better (1000 nits). I have also heard from the retailer staff that the LG was more reliable (less units claimed per volume of sales). The major advantage of the LG is that is had the IPS and can be viewed from all angles.

In relation to this thread, Sony TV has some good reviews however not really sure myself of the specifics. It's best to research it and not be only driven by the discounted stock. This model is last years' TV.

The OLED in my view is not very reliable as I have seen one seller on Gumtree trying to flog their 55" LG off for top dollar with a Green line in the middle of the screen. Due to being a native LED screen, any anomaly (ie. dead or bright pixel) will really stand out.

In my view that the ACL for a 55" $3K TV; you will have a good case however I would say that you have to fight for it to be fixed. You would expect a $3K TV to last over a year. I wouldn't waste $1 with their extended warranty junk. I would just wait until the OLED becomes mainstream and buy. Samsung will come into the picture as their older Samsung phones - Note 3 etc were already AMOLED.

          Cheers

        • @dealsucker: "Wouldnt our consumer laws make sure that the warranty would be atleast 2 years as opposed to one?"
Prob more like 5 years for an expensive tv. We just had our almost-5-year-old dishwasher repaired free of charge. Apparently 5 years is deemed to be the reasonable problem free period (for that appliance at least).

        • @Lps: Awesome. Thanks. I am going for a cheap arse TV for now… the Hisense Series 3 50inch. Will cough up for OLED once it becomes more affordable.

    • 'Magic Remote - Sold Separately'

thegoodguys - as daft as ever.

If they sold bikes, you'd need to buy the pedals separately.

      • Sounds like a normal pushbike over $1,500

  • 7000 series vs 8500 series.. is there big difference?

    • can use amex deal here… spend 80 get 20 back N try to split as well

  • +1

I bought the 43X8000DS last 'Click Frenzy', not overly impressed although I've only used it a little bit so far.

The picture looks crisp but when there's motion it looks pretty bad. I've changed the motion settings and tried the "Live Football" etc but I can still see ghosting (I think it's called that?). Ever since I bought a cheap TV I've become overly sensitive to the picture quality!

Like I said, not played with it fully yet (still to hook up PS4 & PC for gaming) but certainly wouldn't have paid more than 1k max.

Android can be a bit fiddly but is ok (for me).

    • It's more than likely one of the picture "enhancement" settings.

I have a 55X9300D and the motion handling is flawless, never experienced ghosting.
