      The A8 found here - http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256978856446/hp-pavi…

And the CPU is ranked #117 here http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist…

It's even ranked lower than the T7700..oh dear AMD

      • +5

no wonder the're giving them away.

      • +1

Single threaded performance is poor, but for multi-threaded applications, its quad cores match a current intel dual core (i7 2620m) for speed.

So if you can use all those cores, the AMD is a winner, but in any regular single threaded scenario, it's a loser.

      • +6

Notebookcheck uses benchmarking tools that test calculations like floating point and rendering. Superpi (one of their test applications) gives bad scores for nearly every AMD cpu, does this mean that AMD cpus are bad? No, the way that process data is different and in real world use you will find that a cpu like the A8 will destroy a T7700.

For the record I've always used Intel but AMD gets a lot of unnecessary hate and posting that the A8 is worse than old gen technology isn't fair.

Here's a nice video with some proof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdPi4GPEI74

      • +1

        Another comparison here -
Average CPU Mark for i7-2630 was 6,322 (see top chart)
Average CPU Mark for A8-3510MX with Radeon HD Graphics was only 2,989 (see top chart)

Going by the information they have provided, I think that if anyone enjoys taunting staff this could be fun. Going on the details they provide and without having seen the specific terms and conditions in store yet, I think you could confidently say that any laptop that has an AMD graphics card in it should be eligible. The only documentation available on the flyers and their facebook page says "AMD processor" and as AMD moved to abolish the ATi brand, that means that that technicality is out of the way. Unless they want to argue that a graphics chip has no processor then there shouldn't be anything they can do.

    • +5

Hey, good one, try it and get back to us about that….

    • +7

you have got to be joking

  • +3

sooo, anyone wanna go halfies with me and get a half price lappy??

  • +1

i think this is like pauls warehouse buy on get one free, where you pay for the more expensive pair
    @morpheu, where u at??

    • +1

yeah, except there's that rule "if you buy a pair a nikes or asics then the 2nd cannot be of the same brand or the other brand" this offer seems to be for any AMD laptop
ps i'm in sydney, and the lappy i'm after needs a good gpu and big 6 cell battery

      • I'm in Sydney (inner west) and am tempted to grab one with a good gpu.

But do some research and you'll see even the A8's are terrible cpu's and it will be the bottleneck in the system.

Unless you can find something worthwhile, I'll be happy to go halfies.

        • +2

yeah i realise the new Ilano AMD chips are the way to go, but they will take time to trickle down the supply chain, gotta choose something in stock now, but the tricky part is choosing a chip that won't be obsolete when the new cpus/apus come out

        • +2

I think you are being a bit harsh, the A8 performs fine for mainstream computing and the graphics is far superior to anything Intel can offer.

Battery life is great too with Llano.

          Local review: http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/News/260555,amd-redefines-mobile…

      • Yeh I guess I am being a bit harsh with AMD.

I've used AMD desktop cpu/gpus for 10+yrs now so I was disappointed and jumped the gun when I did some brief research on the A8.

  • +1

you can buy 2 then sell 1 on the ebay.

    • +6

You can also sell both :P

  • +2

There is a sony laptop: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256977321055/sony-va…, but at $698 way over priced.

  • +4

Can anyone confirm the model of this laptop: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256979109750/asus-ab…

Can't find any info on the net, maybe the model number is wrong?

    Comparing it to this: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256976294256/asus-ku…

  • +6

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/page/search?q=1015b

This was $238 when I bought it (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/50723). I smell a vast quantity of rotting fish. If someone can find an actual bargain here I'll take back the neg but so far, the aroma is distinct.

Nevermind. Found something that wasn't double the price. It still smells, though.

    • i am going to be LMAO'ing tomorrow the moment someone buys the 1015b thinking it was another HP firesale :D

    • +1

Can't agree more. I also bought Asus 1015b at $238.
Now with this "buy one get one free" deal it would cost $250 per unit!

  • +1

TOMORROW IM GOING IN THERE AND DEMANDING 2 MACBOOKS FOR THE PRICE OF 1.

    • +17

Say "Hi" to security for me. :)

        • +9

Indeed. Don't let the bit in blue discourage you. Practice rightous indignation in front of a mirror before you go. :)

        • +6

          MacBooks don't run AMD.

        • +5

Unless AMD spell for Apple Mac Device

        • did u managed to buy apple laptops?

      • +1

        or…Another Mac Device.

I don't see anything in the offer about iAMD :S

    • +3

they said Advanced Micro Devices not Apple Made Devices ;)

    • it clearly says AMD LAPTOPS!

  • +4

Wonder how this would go with Officework's price match.

    • +4

You get 105% of a laptop for free?

Amd Processor & graphics, running win 7, comes with a keyboard. Would definitely get one of these if i got one for free!

    • with 3g as well not bad $424 each assuming it counts tho I do remember in Aug good guys had 40% off acer tablets $480 each so you can see the margins they are working with.

      • Cheapest I can see elsewhere is $719. So 2 for $848 ($424 Ea) would be a mega good deal. I doubt hardly normal would do it though.

        • Yea don't think they would do it either. The flyer says any amd laptop and this is under tablet pcs, because that what it is.

    • +3

Because you fail at reading. "You can't buy an apple laptop because it uses an intel CPU, NOT amd" has been posted about 6 times already.

      • +11

Hes saying the flyer says "AMD PROCESSOR", and since a GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is still a "processor", and is made by AMD in Apple laptops, then apple laptops should apply.

        • Yes. I know. He's either trolling or he should be spending more time practicing in front of a mirror and less time complaining about negs for the rewards are great if his performance is right.

        • @LeechingLeech

They obviously mean the cpu, but not mentioning it is probably gonna cause them problems.

Either way you're not getting 2 macs for the price of 1.

    • +4

you can buy one of their macs and get a big mac free.

  • -3

Either way I'm going to try :D

cross fingers for the unsure newbie employee

    • Yea just don't abuse the employees lol.

    • So how many macs did you get for free?

    • Buy 1 Get 1
Buy any laptop with an AMD processor & get one for FREE! ) “Excludes Sony And Apple

  • +1

Make sure you all print out the online prices and take them in store. As with the HP deal they will definitely mark up there prices hardcore!

So be safe and do it. HN Morayfield BURNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!

  • So the free laptop that you get, does it have to be an AMD or can it be an Intel?

    • Has to have a AMD processor, so it has to have a AMD CPU, not GPU, because a GPU isn't a processor. (according to the community here)

      • GPU = Graphics processing unit
        CPU = Central processing unit

Both are proecessors, Hardly Normal, technically should be doing the 2 for one on apples otherwise its false advertising.

If I could, I would buy one of these: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256977258511/sony-va… tomorrow and get one free just to make gerry cry on the news about how unfair everything is to hardly normal!

        • +2

I'm betting they'll point at the spec sheet and say "Nah, but nice try." :)

        • What would they probably say if you pointed that out and exposed their false advertising?

        • +3

I'd don't think they'd really care if it was going to cost them thousands of dollars.

  • anyone in Melbourne wants to meet up in the morning to "buy" two lapies and share the cost?

    • Yeah I am.
      Please enable Private Messages.

  • and all this on 24 mths int free

  • +2

I seriously can't see why this is going to be such a good deal. I might as well buy 2 x Thinkpad L420 from Centrecom, claim the cashback for both, then pawn one of them on ebay for a modest profit.

Sure, the cash back might take a while to come back, but in the end I'll have a pretty decent 14" Sandy bridge Thinkpad with 8GB ram for around $400…

  • +3

Yeah, I think people may have cracked a bit of a fat because of the recent HP Touchpad deal.
I need to see exact models and prices before I decide.

  • +1

Is there a single AMD laptop worth buying at effectivly half of RRP?

    • no, check the previous promo on the c50 netbooks

    • +2

err this is an i3 laptop?

    • +1

i'll like to smoke what you're smoking

  • i heard this on the radio as well. but just couldn't find it

  • Anyone going OS within 30 days could also claim the GST refund…wonder if customs would insist that you must be carrying BOTH lappies out of the country. Depends on how the receipt is worded I guess.

  • +2

I remember when HN had the buy one get one free Logitech offer. Every single Logitech peripheral was marked up to RRP or above. When you did the maths they were still more expensive than MSY, Umart and all the other brick and mortar stores and wouldn't have even come close to LTS's prices. I have a feeling a lot of people will be disappointed by HN's latest sales tactic.

  • Problem with the A series APU's is that they're basically tweaked Phenom II's @ 32nm. Which is really old technology. However I use an Athlon X2 250 at times and it's pretty zippy in windows 7 even plays MW2 at 1080 with 4650. You should have no problems running these Laptops, especially for Web, Office, Video & light gaming. it'll be at least 2012 when the bulldozer APU's come out.

    Cheers

    Dave

  • Can anyone please suggest me a best laptop till 500-600$ in this deal?
Also I would like to know if I choose a laptop which costs 600$ does that mean I can get another free laptop for same or in lower range?

    • You will get the same or lower its your choice

  • +2

Shame not one AMD laptop has 1920X1080 resolution …

  • +1

having breakie right across havey Norman lol, no car here yet, good sign for me ^-^

  • http://www.harveynorman.com.au/page/1256979965539/buy-one-ge… if you scroll down and see the laptops under the image that is all that is available lol. It's kind of sad to think they are all well overpriced and the technology isn't that great. Don't get me wrong i'm an AMD fan as much as an INTEL fan… i'm not a hater but i must say these are some lame AMD laptops they have here. I think the best "value" is getting two of the cheapest Asus models for $598 making them $300 each which isn't too bad for a budget laptop. http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256979109750/asus-ab… In addition if you search the site you will see that Havey has put "Buy 1 Get 1" next the eligible models… no tablets & no netbooks only overpriced amd laptops! So who isn't surprised? Me for one ;)

is this one worthing buying in half price? any comment?

  • Anyone know why Sony aren't included? I just went in and couldn't buy a Sony… Is it on any of the flyers etc?

  • Buy any laptop with an AMD processor & get one for FREE! ) “Excludes Apple”

    lol

  • This promotion started yesterday afternoon at least at HN Chadstone.
I bought couple of these http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256979106594/toshiba…
    $786 + (160 for 4 gb ram upgrade).

This one has 1.5GB graphics card
3 were on stock including display one at EOB yesterday.

    • +2

Wait what? U paid $160 for a $30 ram upgrade?

      • Sorry its 160 including 4Gb ram upgrade and 2 year extended warranty for both Laptops.

    • gimme $160 and I'll send you another 4GB ram….no wait, I'll do it for $150…bargain!!

      • hardik1us said it was for 2 notebooks and it also included 2 x 2 year extended warranties

  • AMD is great, competitive company :) I've always had a AMD Power computer. They have come along way from what they use to be…. I know they have never really had much time on the top, but they have always tagged behind and introducted new technology to compete with CPU GIANT - INTEL.

I have a HP Laptop A8 3850mx APU with built in graphics crossfired with 1gig 6750m.
Its great, surfing the net.. I get around 5hours 'With Undervolting' and overclocked and still undervolted I get around 1hour gaming on battery.
But it plays all the latest and greatest on the screens max res at above playable FPS.

And yes i just have a stanard 6cell.

The only downer for me is that, i would of perfered full hd screen.

      Cool story bro

      • your reply is liked more then his story bro

  • Harvey Norman stores started this yesterday, ahead of time (again)?! That's like the HP Touchpad Deal. I called 15 minutes BEFORE the official start of the sale and was told all gone. However, this time is not a big issue as it looks like Harvey Norman's standard ticketed price is overly inflated (some pretty much more than double what the price really should be).

    • They lied that time. I also called before, but they said they had none. I turned up at the store moments later, and there was a (very long) queue.

Missed out by a couple of people.

  • Anyone in Brisbane interested in going halves on this?

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256979615533/hp-pavi…

    $350 each?

    [email protected]

    • Are you able to get to Ipswich tonight? I might take you up on that :)
