Both correct, hydro Hampstead wheel to power my house, cheaper then a Powerwall

    • +7

How long do they take to break down in there?

      • +6

Not long, they start sobbing after an hour or so.

  • This is $109 on amazon, is this useless or decent?

    • Depends if you actually use it. They can stink if you don't take the compost out, and attract vermin.

      • Don't put milk and dairy products in it and you'll attract less vermin. Make sure you have a good balance of "greens" and "browns" too.

        • How do you collect the "browns"? Poop in a newspaper?

    • +2

I fill with plenty of lawn clippings and then add then add veggie & some fruit peel scraps (not meat or egg shells).

      • +2

Those are only nitrogen sources (green) though. You should balance it with carbon (brown) or it won't compost (or take a very long time).

      Who is funding the prizes?

  • +3

Just an FYI, check with your local council of you're eligible for a rebate. Mine gives 50% up to $50 back: https://www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/info/20002/rubbish_and_recyc…

    • +1

Thanks. This led me down a path to find my council selling some nice tumblers at a significant discount but I already bought this one.

  • Don't buy these fancy compost bins. Buy the standard ones from Bunnings. Thank me after few years.

    • Can you recommend one around this price?

    • +2

Agree. If you want compost fast, you need about 1000L (1 cubic metre) of material to get the bacterial heat up in the first month or so and you need to turn it over often & keep it moist.
Anything smaller works as well, but much slower. Turning it over regularly, keeping it moist, running over the stuff first with the mower to keep the pieces small and compacting it a bit, all help in speeding it up. Balance and mix of brown (dry, cuttings, leaves, paper & cardboard) and green waste helps but is not critical, just don't use >50% lawn clippings and expect it to work.

Thanks OP, I would have got one, unfortunately closet stock to me would involve a 2 hours 40 round trip, with current petrol prices being what they are it would probably be cheaper for me to import one directly delivered from Uzbekistan.

  • Does this have a handle?

  • Got one! Cheers!

I had an Aldi one but double and it was useless. Plastic degraded and broke after 2 years and didnt compost that well. I gave it away and just bought a plain black plastic open bottomed compost bin and thats going great . worms are thriving and composting working a treat.

  • Thanks OP, got one

  • Unavailable for Delivery,No stock for pickup for QLD

Or just simply dig a hole and chuck it in..

    • And attract rodents…

      • +2

Never happened once for me. Dig it deep. The worms go through it fast.

  • This looks uncannily similar to the ones that ALDI sell - simply cheap and nasty.
    Returned for a refund.

  • Damn! All out of stock, been wanting one of these for ages but they're so expensive!

  • Thanks OP.. excellent deal at this price.. not the largest and does not have a handle but who cares .. 2o bucks is a steal ..thanks again

  • ACT sold out, Goulburn is the closest available for us at this time.

If you are part of Brisbane council you can get up to $70 rebate for purchasing any composting product:

  • Now I ain't no gardener but I'm thinking, surely those dual chamber tumbler composters have to be far more efficient at composting quickly and getting usable compost. No?

    • Hot composting is the most efficient way and it requires the right mix of Carbon and Nitrogen composting materials and regular churning. The container itself doesn't matter much

    • composting quickly needs an ideal mix of ingredients, air and mass. These small bins you can get 2 of those right - and it will still work just slower than if you had a big pile of compost that can heat itself.
This can do the job (even better with added worms) and is a lot easier to turn then a big bin. But I think alternating between 2 (or more) big bins would be better in the long run. Fill one, and let it break down while you fill the next.
I use one of these in combination with a big bin (space limits).

Gardening Australia on ABC covered composting on Friday, no doubt comprehensively. I didn't watch it.

Or maybe it was a replay on Sunday.

        • thanks, will have a look on iView.

  • Just got a call saying these were sold out the day before yesterday (??!), refund on its way

  • I just got a call they don't have stocks so my order got cancelled.

  • Got a call this morning that the store didn't have stock but they will ship one out to the store and could take a week or refund option.

  • Strange question, if someone can help. My car has broken down and I'm restricted to the bus/train. How big is the box for this? Could I manage to carry it on a bus? Thanks!

    • +4

It comes flat packed, unassembled, weights about 5kg. Should be ok to carry on bus

      • Thankyou.
