I wish to understand who believes that using a trainer for 1k is better than just cycling out in open for free.

    • +4

Lots of reasons. Chief ones are people who live in climates where cycling is difficult or less pleasant for large chunks of the year, and people who would like to follow a strict/highly structured training plan to achieve a particular performance goal.

Obviously not for your everyday punter who just wants to go for a spin or have a trainer sitting in the garage for the occasional rainy day, but it certainly has its use cases. :-)

People who have small children they can't leave at home alone?

      • +1

Yep, usually i have to ride at night when the kids are asleep

So uninformed, it is a game changer.
Safety, Kids asleep, Training with ERG mode, Racing anytime.

My FTP has gone up 20% at least since moving training indoors

Oh, and all the Tour pro's use it.

  • There's also a very intelligent, extremely good looking, super fit group of people who are totally addicted to Zwift. Or so I've heard 😁

Thanks OP, price protection claim raised as I paid $1099 last month.

    • Can you claim against this price or too late?

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/731390

      • Sadly not. I could have, had I seen it in time before it ended. But I can claim multiple times, so if it goes cheaper than 949 I can claim again. Hopefully we see that $806 price again…

  • Serious question - what is the benefit of something like this over a regular digital/resistance style exercise bike also linked to say Zwift?

Hooking up multi-thousand-dollar carbon fibre road bike to such a gizmo surely wouldn't be too good for the bike given the stress you would put through it in race scenarios - compared to say an old banger.

    • +1

How would you link the resistance style bike, needs to have power and cadence meter.

This also adjusts the resistance to the terrain

    • +1

Most/many people have a separate "beater" frame in the same geometry for zwift duties, but it really depends on how expensive that carbon bike is.

    • You can't compare them, with the built in flywheel its like riding outside.
