R36S Retro Handheld Video Game Console (Purple) US$41.98 (~A$64.43) Delivered @ 3C Digital Store Club via AliExpress

110

Missed out on the last deal as I was trying to figure out which one of these Retro Consoles would be a good entry device - looks like it's come back a tiny bit cheaper compared to last time.

Reviews seem to be OK, did see some feedback around the buttons not being too great but can be DIY'd to make it feel a little better.

General advice from forum posts and the previous thread suggests to replace the micro SD that comes with it with a branded one.

Mod Update: Price in the title has been updated to include GST.

    • Well yes and no.

Technically you can back them up yourself. But <insert aint nobody got time for that meme here>

        • +3

Yes, we should all go out and buy Pokemon Red new from the store and play it legally.

          • -4

@sinewaves7: cant you buy it from the nintendo online?

            • @Jaduqimon: That’s renting it.

The last time you could buy those games was on the 3DS. But Nintendo has closed that store.

      • +1

You mean 16bit. Downloading everything single 32bit era game, most of which were CD based, would take more than minutes.

      • -1

        You mean 16bit?

  • +1

Was slightly cheaper last deal, paid $59.29 delivered… still a decent purchase…but I’d actually recommend a RGB30 for around the $95 dollar mark.

    • -7

Any of that model come with games? I’m hopeless at finding them.

      • -5

        It comes with those games

        • 🤦‍♂️

          • -6

@PainToad: It literally says in the aliexpress ad. 64gb of games on sdcard why pretend

            • @Jaduqimon: Do you want these deals banned completely? Do you want ozbargain sued? What don’t you understand?

              • -3

@PainToad: So these deals are illegal?

                • +5

@Jaduqimon: The device and the emulators aren’t illegal.

Including copyright rom on the sd card is illegal.

The mods here seem to like to assume that all the ROMs included are legal homebrew ROMs, not copyrighted ones so they don’t need to ban the devices from being banned.

This thinking isn’t probably going to work, eventually I reckon Nintendo etc. will send OzBargain a threatening email.

But people talking about the included ROMs will spend up the devices being banned.

                  • -3

@PainToad: So why are we promoting illegal sales of roms then? These deals should be banned unless the sale doesn't include unlicenced roms

                  • -2

                    @PainToad: shutup.

                • -2

@furiousgeorge: I think I'm the Karen here lol he is advocating for these deals to remain posted…

                • +1

@furiousgeorge: Oh wow, you called me a Karen…how witty and original.

All I’m trying to do is keep these devices from being banned because they’re awesome.

              • @PainToad: oh come on, the way ozbargainers blame people for commenting is pretty silly.
the deals shouldn't be here if you don't want ozbargain held responsible. it's that simple. people will always ask about the games because that's what the devices are for.

                • @sinewaves7: The devices are for playing games, correct. But there’s nothing stopping you from ripping the games yourself from copies you legally own…or running legal homebrew games.

    • At that price isn't the RG35XX H plus better?

      • Probably just comes down to your preference in the screen and the aspect ratio… I love my Shumps so I'd go with the RGB30.

    • +1

I prefer the dpad and analogue sticks on the R36S. Also my RGB30 has backlight bleed issues that the R36S did not. The RGB30 is more powerful and has a unique 1:1 screen, so I do like it. It's really good for Pico 8 with the wifi and the 1:1 AR. Vertical arcade games are also good on that screen.

Mine actually got fried when I plugged in a QC 3.0 charger the first time I charged it though, I was able to get a refund, but I got it for $90 AUD all up during BF and haven't seen it that cheap since. Ended up getting another for $104 AUD last week, a green one this time. I've got some hall effect sticks to slap in there because the included ones suck.

  • -1

Those ones are cheaper, but are they of decent quality, or are they not worth buying? AliExpress

    • That’s a NES on chip. Completely different thing.

      • You're correct; they are different. I'm not much of a gamer, but I've been considering getting one. I don't know much about those consoles.

        • If you just want to play NES games, the one you linked to would be an ok cheap intro to these type of devices.

This deal would be much better in general but.

    • -1

      Those are junk

  • OP Edit: Last deal's title price also did not include GST I think - so this one is still slightly cheaper

Previous deal did include GST. It was slightly cheaper as it also stacked with this

    • oh, thanks - will edit my post

  • -2

Anyone know how you get the games on the SD card into the machine? My one is called Myu mini or something like that.

  • +2

probably mandatory when posting like this, to warn people not talking about things that are not supposed to say. we dont want ozb get a warning letter from neentenduuh

    • This is quite ridiculous really. Coles sales similar things advertised in their catalogue.

      • Does the coles catalogue have a forum with users asking what romsets, sites, etc to download?

        • +2

          coleswarez.com.au

        • No, because Coles isn’t making the catalogue for bargain hunters, and the things you mentioned constitute a very important part of the deal on ozb-land.

          • +1

@frugalftw: “ozb-land” isn’t for discussing illegal ROMs. The hardware, sure, that’s perfectly legal.

            • -3

@PainToad: How is it different than posting a capsule coffee machine and people ask where to get cheap, compatible pods? Or printer cartridges?

              • +2

@frugalftw: You must be trolling. Coffe pods and printer cartridges aren’t illegal.

                • @PainToad: It’s not about that. The availability of cheap coffee pods and printer cartridges is an essential part of what makes a deal a deal. If that part of the deal is illegal, ban all the devices rely on them, instead of allowing the deals to be posted then arbitrarily policy them.

                  • @frugalftw: That’s like saying car deals should be banned because some people will speed in the cars which is illegal.

There are legal uses for these devices.

                    • -1

@PainToad: No, it’s not. Because you can drive a car without speeding, it’s a choice. Where are you going to get the original cartridges and the adapters to backup your own rom? I don’t see much of a choice there.

There are legal uses for these devices.

Such as? Even if that were true, this is a place where people would go far to take advantage of any offers. It’s fair to assume 99.9% of the sales generated from this website for this kind of devices are not going to result in sales of the original games.

                      • +2

@frugalftw: You're choosing a strange hill to die on. The ask is simply not to refer to/ask questions about activities that are illegal.

Who knows what the chances are of any consequences if people don't abide by this, but why risk it when anyone's questions can just be answered via a basic Google search or looking at the item listing in more detail themselves?

The simple answer to your question on legal uses for these devices is homebrew games/apps. Fantasy consoles like PICO-8 are popular.

                      • @frugalftw: lol, you really have zero idea what you’re talking about do you?

Where are you going to get the original cartridges

Not everyone is a Gen Z like I’m guessing you are. Some of us have the original cartridges because we grew up playing them. I still have boxes of my classic games.

The other legal possibility is people purchasing Virtual Console games on the Wii or Wii U a few years back and they’ve legally extracted the roms from the console.

the adapters to backup your own rom?

Online stores. Or extracted from other legal sources like Virtual Console that I mentioned above. And for disc based games, any old disc drive in a computer. Or are you too young to know computers can have disk drives?

                        Such as?

Running homebrew games made by hobbyist or even yourself.

It’s fair to assume 99.9% of the sales generated from this website for this kind of devices are not going to result in sales of the original games.

                        Assume all you want.

                    • @PainToad: Deals that include games such as this one should be banned. If it's just the standalone machine then it's ok.

                      • @Jaduqimon:

Deals that include games such as this one should be banned. If it's just the standalone machine then it's ok.

Mods are trying to assume there are no illegal roms included so they don’t need to ban the device. I’m not a mod, I didn’t make this assumption. Don’t blame me.

  • Did anyone who bought this have issues with the delivery clearing customs? I just received an email stating it failed to clear customs but it doesn't say what I need to next.

    • +1

Just wait a few days, it usually clears itself.

      • Ahh awesome. Thanks

    • Yeah I get it every time I order from aliexpress these days, I do nothing and the item turns up a few days later

  • +3

I've had mine for a few weeks now.

    • Excellent screen
    • For a few people, SanDisk cards just don't work in the Games Slot but are fine in the OS slot. Go figure. My Samsung card worked flawlessly but 5 different SanDisk cards refused to work.
    • Very firm buttons
    • Ergonomics are not great for games that require a lot of usage of the shoulder buttons.

    32gb was enough for me.
SNES, Megadrive, and a few PS1 games.

    • what PS1 games you play?

      • +1

Colin McRae Rally, Vagrant Story, Spider-Man and World's Scariest Police Chases.

    • How are fighting games as I play alot of tekken and street fighter.

      • +1

I think the buttons are too stiff to pull off combos comfortably but I don't play fighting games regularly.

          • @Limbot: Yep. I did both the d-pad and face buttons. The face buttons were very slightly better. The dpad feels exactly the same.

            • @DASHCAM NOW DUDE: Thanks for feedback. Mine should arrive this week and was doing some research.

  • -5

    Another R36S post 🤦‍♂️

  • How do you play N64 games on these controllers? Or any controller?

Seems like you would need 6 button plus shoulders which there aren't many out there

    • C-buttons on one of the sticks, there are four shoulder buttons, so Z button there or on X/Y.

  • Heard that these are not the best of quality compared to branded handhelds from the likes of Anbernic and Miyoo. They may boast better specs and are priced cheaper but long term usage dissuaded me from buying.

    • Pretty good summary tbh. Essentially, better devices are more expensive for the same specs - these are great value but with a little less quality. Still should keep you going for quite some time though with the amount they'd usually get played.

    • You're right but how long term are you talking about? I can see this thing lasting a few years which is good enough for $60.

I wouldn't be too concerned on long term use. Rather, I'd be concerned about the comfort and feel.

      • The issue with quality isn’t how long it lasts, it’s how likely are you do get one with issues right out the box.

  • I received mine in the post today. Ive charged it up, but when i power it up, the blue light on the front comes on but nothing at all on the screen, doesnt look like the screen is getting power at all? Have I received a dud or am i doing something wrong?

  • +1

Yer i ended up getting it sorted. I checked the sdcards on my computer and it turned out they gave me 2x games memory cards, so i went and bought a couple of decent cards and downloaded the latest Arkos os and it works fine now. Found it a bit odd though that the screen didnt light up at all if it didnt have a os installed on the card.
